Hello there, I am know that Dreadnoughts are a bit of a sore subject in the game at the moment as they are considered OP. Personally as a non player I love them on aesthetics alone, easily my favourite unit look wise in the game. However I do not want them to be completely useless if I do ever play.

I currently have 6 Contemptors, 3 built and 3 of the new kit with all the weapons.

The built ones are armed:

1 Dual Melta. (Resin SoH sculpt)
1 Dual Fists with plasma guns and havoc launcher. (new plastic)
1 with Autocannon, heavy bolter and havoc launcher. (new plastic)

So for the other 3 I am really torn on some dual ranged loadouts (Plasma, Lascannon and volkite) or a mix of those with fists and chainfists.

Is dual chainfist a viable build?

So just asking how do people think Contemptors are best armed? Specialised with dual weapons or a mix that allows the unit to deal with most situations?

All thoughts and opinions welcome.

Well whatever you field you should magnetize. That way you can use whatever gw makes best at current moment without needing to buy more/cut old models.

It is my understanding that they are designed for 4x1mm magnets?

Pretty much, 4x1mm and 4x2mm depending on which joint. It has these indents you slot them into and they fit nice and clean.

Honestly, any contemptor with duel 'X' is going to put the hurt on it's particular target. But a contemptor with 2 Volkites does sound like a heap of fun. 12 twin-linked shots with deflegrate is just delightful.
I think the exception (and I will no doubt be corrected if wrong), is the fists. Duel power/chain fists has no added benefit over having 1 of each. You're better off taking one of each and then picking what built in weapon suits your needs best.

Were they my 3 dreads to build, i'd be going duel Volkites for a hilarious possible 24 shots, duel Plasma for the plasma pie plates and Two Fists because for as OP as it is, there's nothing like a blender-dread mixing it up in melee.

The melee dread wont win you many friends (not at the moment at least) but it'll make for a good hard counter to the likely chance of coming up against an opposing melee contemptor/leviathan.

As for the magnets, I used 4mmx1mm magnets and I had a touch of overhang. They still fit, but it was very snug.

Magnetise 100%

As an aside. Dreads really aren't as bad as the internet whining makes out. I wouldn't worry too much. If you are worried about a bad matchup when you get to the table then just have a quick chat with your opponent and maybe add extra VPs for dread kills or let them out a few more points on the table. (if you do magnetise then you could always change your weapons to be less powerful against whatever they are playing)

I would always recommend this approach whenever you have an imbalance at the time of a game starting. For instance if you turned up with all tanks against an army mainly sporting anti infantry, or if you turned up with all melee/blast template dreads and your opponent was playing angels wrath or just a very flier heavy list that would annihilate you without any problems.

I'm planning on two for regular use, maybe add another later. But my primary picks will be an autocannon/fist dread with havoc launcher, to advance with my infantry, and a dual plasma cannon dread just because it looked like fun, which will hang out in my back ranks with my heavy weapons squad.

I had considered dual lascannon, but other options do it better/more points efficiently so I picked a dual weapon loadout unique to dreads.

My starting loadouts will be dual las with helical, dual plasma and melta+chainfist.

Thanks everyone. I should have mentioned that I have an irrational fear of magnets, the things set my teeth on edge so they are a no go. (Weird I know, but the point of irrational fears is that they are, well, irrational).

I also feel that certain poses just look odd with certain weapons so I prefer a fixed loadout. I have built a dual Volkite and dual plasma dread, just trying to work out what my final one will be.

If you have two dual-ranged builds then I'd highly recommend a dread with at least 1 melee arm. As I said my outlook is to capitalize on what dreads can do that no other unit can, and while you can find volkites elsewhere you can't find Brutal (3) on much else in the game.

A dual fist dread also opens up a lot of poseability options - arms out, crushing a marine, etc.

Dude, you picked the wrong Legion. This is Iron Hands territory!

Kidding aside great job on the dreads!

Those are some gorgeous dreads, very nice work on the weathering and detailing.

As for loadout, personally I always go fist and gun. It pains me to give up the versatility such a build offers as my preferred playstyle is to walk them up the field acting as support to the rest of the force.

Like, 2 guns and they can't win combat. 2 CCW and they can't shoot stuff well on the way in. Same for leviathans IMO, having a 300pt model stuck in combat gently bapping people on the head for several turns hurts. But give em one claw and they can usually get themselves clear before long.

Personally, I’m a fan of the Autocannon, fist, and havoc launcher to move upfield with infantry. If I want to bully my enemy, then I go with a Leviathan and a claw, melta lance, and phosphex launcher. When I get in phosphex range, the leviathan will break forward to engage. As for contemptor loadouts, I like to keep a fist on them so they can do work in close combat. As a Dark Angel, I like to make my dreadnoughts Dreadwing too.
