The old thread has been unused for almost a year and a half, so I decided to let it remain dead. No thread necromancy this time!

Lots of stuff for Cyberpunk today. How interesting any of it is will depend on how active you are with it, or might be with it in the future.

First of all, the 1.6 patch, called "Edgerunners", dropped today. Customizable outfits that don't get wrecked just because a better shirt dropped than the one that you're wearing, a few new gigs (interesting? dunno) and some new weapons, lots of bug fixes, a new arcade game within the game that can also be played on your real world mobile device (why? *shrug*), some content (Easter eggs, I 'm guessing, though the patch notes don't say) related to the new Edgerunners animated series on Netflix, and cross-platform saves. So if you struggled a little ways into the game on a PS4, and have now purchased yourself a shiny new PS5, you can save your old PS4 playthrough to a cloud server, and pick up where you left off on your PS5. Since there's no multi-player, I suspect that the usefulness of this is somewhat limited. But we'll see. If you're still playing the game, you might like this patch. Otherwise - unless you end up really liking Edgerunners - I'm guessing you're probably not paying much attention. Unless word gets around that the new gigs are *really* good.

Second, a set of modding tools called "RedMod" was released today. It's free on Steam, and I would imagine elsewhere as well.

Third, the game's first DLC, entitled "Phantom Liberty", has been announced. The teaser trailer has V taking an oath of service to the New USA (and Johnny noting that it was a bad idea, of course), and 2023. The fine print at the link below indicates that espionage is somehow involved. There's no pricing information, and it's not listed on Steam yet.

Weird. And disappointing.

Seems off-genre to go for a federal government story (I honestly hadn't known that countries still mattered at all in-universe)

Disappointed that they brought Johnny back. Both because his storyline sucked, and Keanu's salary will be a drain away from real content again.

Was hoping for free-form content and a revamp of some of the more lacking elements of Night City.

Maybe more details will make it seem more interesting, but at face value this isn't going to make me give the game another go.

They do. Things don't work entirely the same (for instance, iirc MilTech is effectively the NUS military, and the current president is a former MilTech CEO), and the US is a shadow of its former strength. Of course, given many of the themes of the '80s when cyberpunk and Cyberpunk appeared, other nations haven't necessarily been hammered as badly as the US. However, I don't know how 2077's geopolitical stuff has changed since the 2020 era of the setting, so I can't say more than that about other countries. In 2020, the EU and USSR were rising powers. I don't think that's the case in 2077, but I'm not really sure.

Disappointed that they brought Johnny back. Both because his storyline sucked, and Keanu's salary will be a drain away from real content again.

It'd look odd if he was completely silent. He served in the military, so it'd be a bit strange if he didn't have at least some comments to make about you signing on with the NUSA. Another CDPR source has apparently revealed that there are no more planned DLC at this point. Given that, it wouldn't be surprising if the Silverhand voice work was recorded at the same time that Keanu Reeves was doing his voice work for the base game. If they keep his interactions with the player limited to occasional snarks and wisecracks, and if he doesn't have any lengthy dialogues with V (he's not going to be talking with anyone else, after all), then it wouldn't have been that big of a deal to have him rattle off a few extra lines of dialogue.

Was hoping for free-form content and a revamp of some of the more lacking elements of Night City.

Maybe more details will make it seem more interesting, but at face value this isn't going to make me give the game another go.

Quite possibly. On the other hand, we know virtually nothing about it right now. A teaser trailer that lasts just under a minute, isn't going to show much. We don't even know *when* in 2023 it's scheduled to come out.

I'm sure I saw a youtube vid a while ago that talked about the planned story for the expansion and it's basically Escape from New York/LA. An AV carrying President Myers crashes in Night City's combat zone (new map area) and V has to Snake Plissken in there to rescue her. Sounds pretty cool to me.

And surprising no one (except maybe with the timing), CD Projekt Red has announced that there is a sequel under development. However, the only things revealed about it so far are its codename - Project Orion - and that it will be explicitly designed for high-end PCs this time.

There's a new trailer for Phantom Liberty. Not much revealed, except for special celebrity guest star Idris Elba. He also has a brief non-game appearance as himself at the end of the linked video.

Keanu Reeves was a big attraction that gained focus. Of course CD Projekt Red blew it with their launch failure, and the extra publicity worked against them. But that was not Keanu reeves fault, or the guy that cast him for the role. Frankly I approve. He is likely expensive, but maybe not excessively so, games have lower salaries than films, and I doubt he would take home anything more than a tiny fraction of what he got for playing Neo. Besides Keanu Reeves is a genre fan, a genre icon and from all accounts was happy to work with a licence that was close to Mike Pondsmith, one of the giants in the genre.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

I remain convinced that many of Cyberpunk's problems can be laid at the feet of the decision to make Keanu and his character central to the plot. The final years of the game that should have been used to polish and build out its core where instead spent redoing the main campaign to focus on Johnny Silverhand, which explains why the main campaign was the only part of the game that really worked.

Which I don't blame Reeves for, but this idea is prevalent enough I see other people talk about it so there is some understandable hostility imo.

It would be strange if Silverhand was suddenly silent during the DLC. Him not showing up at all would have caused a disconnect with his personality.

I'm surprised that they brought Elba onboard for this. I doubt he came cheaply. Hopefully he adds something to the experience.

And the Rockerboy is possibly the worst character archetype in Cyberpunk.

CDPR has announced a "Phantom Tour" event, in which they'll be touring eight major cities to hype the upcoming Phantom Liberty DLC. No doubt in an attempt to avoid fears of another disastrous release, both journalists and regular fans will be given the opportunity to play part of the DLC. The cities are -

Warsaw, Poland
Cologne, Germany
Tokyo, Japan
Beijing, China
Seoul, South Korea
Paris, France
Sao Paulo, Brazil
London, United Kingdom

Conspicuously absent from that list is any city in North America. It's not a "Eurasia Only" thing (which would be understandable, as they're a European company), as there's also a city in South America. No idea why they're not visiting either the US or Canada, but it's an interesting oddity.

I found him hit or miss myself, though a lot of that for me was down to his abrasive personality, which gets a fair bit of exploring and explaining the more you play the game, as people who knew him will chime in.

I think most folks hate him because he is stuck to you, that and the plot running on a timer of sorts, which he can be a constant reminder of.

I hated him in the original game - and he is no better in this.

But then I actually wanted to play a corp character not a streetkid

Making him the central character rather than the player was horrible.

Well, that and he's a monster with a extraordinarily narrow world view that can be used to justify any sort of obscenity as 'worth it,' if it causes the smallest harm to someone he hates.

Its also easy to break his commentary if you don't do things in the order the developer expected (which is real easy to do in an open world game). There are side missions that are completely incoherent and tonally at odds with how he's interacted with you so far if you don't do them in the Right and Proper Order. Which is weird for this type of game.

Keanu Reeves is fine. But Johnny's a pretty unpleasant person, and he gets annoying very quickly. Plus, as has been noted in the past, the game's plot sometimes feels like it was a last minute addition that replaced something that would have offered a lot more freedom to the player.

But that's speculation.

The real reason I came here is because a new trailer has been posted for Phantom Liberty -

This one opens by revealing why you're cooperating with the NUSA - someone is claiming to be able to offer you a cure for what's in your head.

From Reddit, where this is described as not being DLC, but Cyberpunk 2.0:

virtually every system of the main game has been changed and/or updated

police system is completely reworked with multiple tiers of NCPD/mercs chasing you down in vehicles according to your wanted level, apparently on level 5 maxtac will chase you down and it will be some sort of bossfight against them (source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=riK1i8lQwRM&t=511s)

perks and skills have been completely overhauled, no longer simple passive stat boosts, much more active abilities like different melee finishers, a dash, or the ability to deflect bullets with melee weapons

the difficulty curve is reworked/rebalanced

the loot tiers are reworked

archetypes of enemies have been redone for more variety in combat encounters

an entirely new 6th skill tree that uses a different type of skill points (relic points) that will be used to add new abilities to your cyberware

installing cyberware now has an effect on your body and you cant install too much or else you will go cyberpsycho (no idea what that looks like in game)

installing cyberware now has a first person cutscene added to it, just like in the prologue at Vik's clinic

you can now "attune" cyberware to one of your attributes, making it more efficient if you have invested in that attribute; example here optical camo is attuned to the "cool" attribute: https://i.imgur.com/1UI9SEX.png

armor is no longer tied to clothing, it instead tied to your cybernetics

vehicle combat is added to the game, you can even use your katana on your bike

vehicles are no longer bought from fixers, but bought through a website set up by mama welles

some vehicles have guns installed on them (machine guns, rocket launchers)

new type of infinitely replayable/repeatable missions are being added where you need to steal certain vehicles marked on your map

new activity introduced "airdrops", loot caches that drop randomly on the map that you can fight over and retrieve for yourself

tons of new random events/activities are added to make the world feel more alive, like car chases and gang fights

I'm glad no one has learned any lessons about promising (or expecting) the moon.

Is this list a wishlist from reddit, or a statement from devs?

Witcher 3 had mounted combat. Setting up the katana on the bike would be piss easy. As would most of the list if you had access to the actual devtools they use.

I don't see anything that is shoot for the moon.

Random events to make the world feel more alive, car chases, police system, overhaul of skill system and cyberware systems, infinitely replayable missions...

if you think the same team that brought the base game can manage all that, you have much more optimistic expectations than I do.

Even the mounted combat and vehicle guns feel like a stretch, given how often basic cars would glitch out and fail to move.

Well, there are a couple of links. I can't watch the YouTube link right now, but the imgur link shows an image of cyberwear linked to a stat, as promised. Either it's a mod, a hoax someone went to a lot of trouble to create, or the list is legit. No matter which one it is, we'll likely know before long as the Phantom Tour is expected to begin soon. We'll get feedback from journos and regular players when those events kick off.

Ah, I wasn't aiming for a 'this is fake' angle, just questioning their ability to do it well after the fiasco they made of the base game - especially the open ended and 'world feels alive' stuff.

The changes are being confirmed elsewhere, as well. For example, this Gamespot article mentions some of the items from the list as part of a hands-on that the writer was able to participate in -

He also mentions more Silverhand dialogues. It sounds like Johnny's going to be talking about his time in the army, and his desertion.

Ohh Silverhand whining and bitchin more....awesome...being able to press delete on him would be almost worth re-installing

The rest is the stuff they promised in the original game so good to see its happening eventually

They already have police spawns set up and I think they do differ somewhat in terms of what spawns. It seems like more spawn at higher stars.
Your crime level is probably just a global variable checked by a script or listener to spawn cops. The harder part of that is creating the new in game assets.

You already have vehicular combat with the Panam mission chain. It's just a matter of creating new assets.

Seriously, the majority of that list is just scripting and fairly simple stuff at that. It's not like they're overhauling the engine. If they had Bethesda-level mod support this would already exist.

Now, if they were promising wall running I would be doubtful. I don't see a simple way to do that well with the current engine.

It's up for prepurchase now. $29.99 in the US. The news blurb says September 26 is the release date, but the Steam page itself says September 25. I'm guessing it's going to be a world-wide release (which is odd for an expansion, admittedly). And since I live on the West Coast of the US and am quite a few hours behind Poland and GMT, It'll presumably still be the 25th for me when the release time arrives.

The Phantom Tour is no doubt meant to help with that. But even if the tour turns out well, CDPR isn't offering any inducements to buy it before the release date. So there's no real reason not to wait until the first post-release word of mouth starts to spread. Hopefully CDPR is anticipating that in it's sales projections.
