Subject: Skull Altar and Feculent Gnarlmaw Warp Manifestation
|

Some questions around the Skull Altar and the Feculent Gnarlmaw. They are both Fortifications in the Chaos Daemons codex with access to the Manifestation rule.
The Manifestation rule says "During deployment, you can set this unit in the warp instead of setting it up on the battlefield." It then goes on to explain the conditions for setting it up on the battlefield.
My questions are:
1) Is there anything that prevents these fortifications from being set up in the warp instead of on the battlefield? (Noting that the warp is distinct from the Strategic Reserves rule)
2) If they can be set up in the warp, do the Nephilim restrictions under "11. Deploy armies" apply to their deployment in subsequent game turns? Specifically the "it cannot be set up within 3" of any other terrain feature that is not part of its own datasheet".
3) If the 3" restriction applies, can I then "remove one Obstacles or Area Terrain feature that is within their deployment zone from the battlefield in order to make room for their Fortification"?

1. No. Its a unit from your army, and every unit from your army can be set up in the warp.
2. The nephilim rules, and the core rules about fortifications, say "Unless otherwise stated.....", the gnarlmaw states otherwise how to set it up, it has its own rules for this. The 3" restriction doesnt apply during deployment, because its own rules say during deployment this unit can be set up anywhere on the battlefield........ When you deepstrike it the general 3" restriction from the core rules applies. The altar however doesnt have any own rules how to set it up, so the 3" restriction always applies.
3. Yes, during deployment, at step 11, you can do that. You cant do this when you deepstrike them, because thats not during deployment.

When you say "general 3" restriction from the core rules", where would I find that in the core rules?

This has been added in the core book indomitus version 1.0 update 24 (!) month ago. Reading FAQs is mandatory, its part of the rules.
Page 247
Add the following sub-section:
FORTIFICATIONS
Units with the Fortifications Battlefield Role are terrain features
that are part of your army. Unless otherwise stated, when
setting Fortifications up on the battlefield, they cannot be set up
within 3" of any other terrain feature that is not part of its own
datasheet (excluding hills, page 260). If it is not possible to set up
a Fortification as a result, it cannot be deployed and counts as
having been destroyed. Fortifications can never be placed into
Strategic Reserves (pg 256).

Thanks for the info.
In terms of the Gnarlmaw using "The garden grows" to ignore the 3" vs Manifestation not being able to ignore the 3", what about the rule ticks the "otherwise stated" check box?
Specifically, you said "because its own rules say during deployment this unit can be set up anywhere on the battlefield" about the Gnarlmaw. But Manifestation has similar wording.
The Garden Grows wrote:During deployment, when you set up this unit, it can be set up anywhere on the battlefield that is more than 9" away from your opponent's deployment zone and any enemy models
Manifestation wrote:During deployment, you can set up this unit in the warp instead of setting it up on the battlefield. If you do so, then in the Reinforcements step of one of your Movement phases you can set up this unit anywhere on the battlefield that is more than 9" away from enemy models,...

Unless otherwise stated means that if the fortification has its own rules how to set it up, the general 3" restriction from the core rules is not used. Instead, the fortification own set up rule is used.
You are right about manifestation, i didnt see that. Manifestation states otherwise, so the 3" restriction doesnt apply.
