Thanks Para. Lots of great entries again this month.

I think there is a missing command somewhere though as Pariah's entry is contained in Vejuts spoiler.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Ta,should be fixed now.

CancelledApocalypse wrote:My entry pic is also tiny again. I used the gallery link, did I do something wrong with it?

Did you select the largest size when you copied the link from the gallery? I took the link that was in your entry post but if you didn't pick full size I believe the gallery takes medium size by default.

I've updated it to the full size gallery pic, I think it'd used the default 600px size before which is obviously tiny when you're cramming four actual photos into that!

Pretty wide range of some very nice entries, not making it easy this month.

My votes for this month are:

Captain Brown: I really like the colour scheme of this Vyper (Alaitoc?), nice job on the pattern on the hull. The gunner looks a bit unassuming in comparison, but in a way that also makes them stand out a little without distracting from the rest of the model.

Lovejoy: Three pretty different models, but they still feel like they belong together, especially with the way you did the bases. Very clean paintjob, with a great eye for the details. Impressive.

401st: Very atmospheric, I'd stay the hell away from that guy, even if he was on my side. Good job on the lighting effects, and a properly bloody and "insane" Apothecary befitting of the World Eaters.

Edit: And an honorable mention to Midget Gems' juniors. Aspiring little artists you got there.

Another month chock full of great models. I ended up giving out a lot of votes...

Daia T'Nara: The blue-grey on the warpsmith is really sweet. The highlighting is pretty harsh in the full-sized pic in the gallery, but it works great in the smaller photo here. Also, I really like the giant pink hand on the servitor!

Captain Brown: It's not a Shining Spear, but it's close enough. The red and green gems stand out quite nicely against the blue camo.

FrozenDwarf: That's some really clean work on a not-too-crisp model. The red pipe wrench turned out particularly well.

theCrowe: You must have one heck of a steady hand to be able to freehand windows on such tiny models.

MrNobody: I love the vivid orange armor, and the black and white tile on the base is a fun little detail.

Ghost_Hedgehog: You get my vote for the Most Literal Interpretation of the Theme. Is this model going to see time on the tabletop?

inmygravenimage:These models are colorful without being garish. They'd fit in a lot of settings.

Geifer: The "eyes" on the medibot (or whatever the Star Wars term is) really pop against the black.

I'll add more comments over the next day or two when I can find the time.

Lots of great entries, my favorites are:

Lovejoy: It's probably debatable how much those hands will really help, but I love those imperial hangers-on.

JoshInJapan: Those minis capture the theme very well and I love the down to earth paintjob.

ZergSmasher: Knowing how small those minis are, I really love the freehand you have done on the banner.

Another great month, despite some notable absences. I gave out lots of votes but my favourites are:

Lovejoy - I love your style of painting, especially knowing I'd probably never be able to emulate it. I think it would be called 'painterly' if you were a portrait artist, which probably makes you the Rembrandt of this competition! xD I also love the modelling you've done for those servo skulls - top work!

JoshInJapan - Some great work on those Japanese ammo carriers, particularly on the wood grain. The shading and highlighting is spot on.

Maharg - More great looking Iron Warriors! That axe head in particular looks awesome, as does the unhelmeted head.

Plus very honourable mentions:

Daia T'Nara - Love the colour schemes, though that servitor is... intimidating...
theCrowe - I've loved WW2 aircraft since I was a kid, and these are really nicely painted. What's the game?
Mr Nobody - Really vibrant colours and I love the tiled base and how it's reflected in the Tau's braid.
KidCthulhu - Excellent colour choices and nice work on the variously hued flesh. Could do with some matting down on those very shiny areas, though!
Boringstuff - More nice Iron Warriors (they're one of my fave traitor legions) - and yes, they would have fit this month's theme to a tee! xD
401st - Really grungy World Eater - I almost thought it was a Death Guard when I first saw it. Impressive OSL and the blood spattered axe head looks great.
Gulgog TufToof - More nicely done OSL, particularly on the shells. Could the rest of the mini have been darker/more in shadow to contrast the OSL more?
The MG family - Love the work on the ork's (and goblin's) flesh and top work from Jr. and Jr.Jr.! Future Golden Daemon winners?
and Viterbi - A colourful and grisly biophagus. Lovely work done with all the gore!

And I gave out even more votes than that!

Ghost_Hedgehog: You get my vote for the Most Literal Interpretation of the Theme. Is this model going to see time on the tabletop?

Thanks Josh, the windows aren’t too bad as there’s usually a bit of help in the sculpt to guide me there. It’s those German crosses that try my freehand skills the most! Zogging 6 of those fiddly feths on each plane! I’ve been painting tiny Polish planes with red/white checkerboards this week. Tricky enough.

Ghost_Hedgehog says: I think this could be a NPC in a Hedgee game or some kind of bonus item to collect to help you progress in a game or access some other item like a key or a lever. This little guy could open a door or something. Whatever he gets up to he’s sure to lend a hand somewhere.

CancelledApocalypse wrote:

Thanks CA
The game is called “ I've loved WW2 aircraft since I was a kid, and these are really collectible”
Spoiler:

I honestly just collect these and to paint them up I’ll do some research to try and make sure I’m getting them right. (Or as you can at 1:300 scale) I’ve looked at various national airforces including French, Finnish, Chinese… I’ve looked at famous aces and VIP transports. I’m honestly enjoying learning about the history as much as I enjoy painting them up. Check the gallery link in my signature.

I started on a rule-set called Check your 6! But found it’s maybe a bit more involved than a casual games-night visitor can pick up and enjoy in an hour and a half.

I did find another set of simple rules online for quick games which I converted to a hex-map based system. I have an air combat game thread. (Which I never did the final write-up for) with some of the house rules and campaign system we used.
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/780843.page

Sorry that’s a lot of information. Hence the spoiler.

Round two:

CancelledApocalypse:You achieved some lovely NMM on the seer's weapons, and your yellow is fantastic.

Lovejoy: I love how you added some texture to the cloth. It really adds to the model.

Jadenim: Solid work. I particularly like how you covered the maimed Bishop in white slime, just like in the movie!

KidCthulhu:Your color choices are very GrimDark without being grimy. I especially like the dark purple robes on the Psyker.

Thanks! The smaller photo's roughly how I see it when I'm working - every time I take a photo and get it into photoshop full-size it's a case of 'Oh... not quite as smooth as it looked, huh?', but never mind. That's 'Doomfire Magenta' on the hand, if memory serves, not sure the folks who formulated the new contrast paints were specifically going for 'this one really looks like a tacky dildo', but it did the job.

 CancelledApocalypse wrote:
Daia T'Nara - Love the colour schemes, though that servitor is... intimidating...

Hehe thanks My original idea for the servitor was, well, it wasn't going to be a hand, but thankfully (for everyone else) I can't sculpt, so an old plastic Goliath donated his arm instead. It's probably for the best.

Loved all the entries this month, that was a great category for bringing out unique ideas - honestly I'd probably not have bothered picking up the Warpsmith otherwise, and he turned out to not just be fun to paint, but a suitable representation for an actual character I'd developed for the warband years ago, so double bonus.

Captain Brown: Great patterning on the hull, and the bone hardware makes for a great contrast.
FrozenDwarf: A classic look, great shading on the skin and the red wrench and yellow hair accent it really well.
theCrowe: I love these, an inspired pick for the theme, and great paint jobs.
MrNobody: Lovely vivid colours - and he inspired the 'snazzy' poll choice, if memory serves? Still hoping that wins next time.
Ghost_Hedgehog: Adorable, I'm definitely gonna copy that (can probably safely unhand an old plastic genestealer, there's a mountain of them in storage doing nothing).
inmygravenimage: Great work, 'mundane' to fit the theme but eye-catching as well, I particularly like the weathered look of the tall robot in the middle.
Geifer: I'm such a sucker for droids so obviously I love these (the specialist too though) - the little touches of colour on the medical droid, particularly the eyes, and really good.
CancelledApocalypse: Lovely warm yellow on the robes and armour set off by the azure blades, and that chest sigil on the Spiritseer has got such a luscious metallic gleam to it.
Lovejoy: They look great, especially the texture of the fabrics, and even better for having seen the proof photo showing how much of them was newly sculpted.
Bishop: Not bad for a human indeed, he looks great, and the fluid splatter on the half-Bishop is really well-judged, not too little and not too much.
KidCthulhu: Full of character and lovely colours and textures.
Nevelon: Great combination of deep blue on the armour and weathered bare metal on the techy bits.
JoshInJapan: Another intriguing one I'm really glad to the theme for providing, and a great paint job, very real-world but still sharp and lively.
Yo7: Good red armour, vivid without looking plastic - I wonder if the red makes him drum faster?
Boringstuff: Very sharp work on the marines and the weapon, really brings out the best of the heavy-hardware sculpts.
401st: Somehow I don't feel like he's got a proper medical license - an unexpected and great idea, masterfully painted.
kurhanik: Great paint jobs all round, and especially the 'ninja'.
Tallandra: That's some serious hardware on that guy, the red casings on the arms and weapons really make them pop.
Gulgog TufToof: Top tier lighting effect on the red glow, and I also really like the 'feel' of the fabric tunic and mask.
Vejut: Nice work on the cloth colours, they compliment the fur painting really well.
Pariah Press: Love the brass/gold on him, great contrast against the blue.
ZergSmasher: Great painting on the robes, and the freehand banner is excellent.
Midget Gems: I love the visual chaos of these guys, and the vivid green skin tones, really brings me back to the fun Orks of old.
Midget Gems Jr & Jr Jr: That's some pretty impressive work - I've recently been going through some of my early minis, and they're a lot less impressive when I wasn't nearly so young.
Maharg: Lovely battle-worn jobs on the armour. and the bronze chestplate on the techmarine is a great way of making him stand out without it being too flashy.
Viterbi: Really enjoy the mad-doctor vibes I'm getting from this guy, and the subtle work on the different fabrics.
Daia T'Nara: Okay was the fist servitor really necessary? Don't answer that.

Thanks. They're very simple models, but they add a lot to their unit.

It sounds like the dairy farmers have found a very forward-thinking ad agency.

Daia T'Nara wrote:

Thanks. Ashigaru were the backbone of any samurai army from the 13th century or so, but weren't issued/allowed the fancier gear. I try to show that whenever I paint them.

More comments:

Nevelon:: You never fail to impress with your meticulous UM technique. I love the deep blues you achieve.

me: I kept these guys as simple as their social status would have required, with drab colors for their clothes and indigo lacing. I tried to add some visual interest with the ammo boxes-- the wood grain turned out pretty well, although one of them looks like the Eye of Sauron or something...

Yo7: I have a soft spot for Mantic orcs, having painted a whole army of them. I would have liked to see the model from a couple of different angles.

Boringstuff: A lot of painters say that model needs a splash of color to add visual interest, but I don't always agree. Your color choices give this model a real business-like feel, like the gun and its crew are there to get the job done.

401st: Looking at this model, I feel like sanitation is pretty low on his list of priorities. Nice and grody.

kurhanik: These guys look like they mean business-- they don't want or need to stand out. THe blue spot colors add some interest without being garish.

Tallandra: This is a very busy model, with lots of bits and bobs that needed picking out. I like your red, but I feel like the blues could have been darker.

Gulgog TufToof: I always thought that Orky comms consisted of just yelling really loudly. I like that little spot of OSL.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Round four:

Vejut: Another pair of cool models. I admire your ability/willingness to sculpt bases.

Pariah Press: All the variations of blue add a lot of visual interest to what would otherwise be a very simple paint scheme. Do you name all of your models?

Zergsmasher: The freehand banner is lovely.

Midget Gems: The different skintones on the ork and grot is a nice touch. I seem to recall that being the norm back when I collected Orks. but I never managed to pull it off this well.

Midget Gems Jr.: The rainbow stag is nifty, and the witch-elf is a solid paint job.

Midget Gems Jr. Jr.: This is a cool model. I like the pointillist hair.

Maharg: Lovely hazard stripes, and your TMM is very nice as well.

Viterbi: The teal gloves and well-used apron give this guy a very medical feel.

As always, superlative work all around. I always enjoy seeing what other hobbyists come up with!

Thanks guys! The yellow was what took the most time, mainly because getting the solid base of Yriel Yellow down just required so many damn coats... but also because every little splatter of other paint took an age to touch up again. That's why I didn't get the wraithlord done in time. I've got to take my hat off to anyone who has the absolute cajones to collect an entire Iyanden or Imperial Fist army, especially if they then paint it up with a brush rather than an airbrush...

I'll get the wraithlord done, eventually.

Thank you for your kind words CancelledApocalypse, Daia T'Nara & JoshInJapan.

Yeah I always try to give the grots a lighter tone to the bigger guys, the Ork skin on this one turned out well but the grot needed a bit more definition and shadow. The eldest MG Jr is showing a lot of interest in painting and design (I got her some wallpaper samples and she has been decorating shoe boxes as dolls houses recently and doing a lot better at it than me )

I'll happily take that! Makes me sound all arty and like I've actually got a plan while painting, instead of just making it up as I go along...

Thanks! It's something I'm doing a lot on cloth now, mostly because it's a lot faster than trying to get smooth and even blends, and I'm impatient!

Cheers! I've kind of reached a point where unless I've done some kind of sculpting on a mini, I struggle to want to paint it.

OK, my attempt at comments:
Daia T'Nara - Loving the 'fleshy' looking servo arms/tentacles - very Chaosy!
Captain Brown - Really like that camo look
FrozenDwarf - Very nicely done flesh tones
theCrowe - They look spot on to me - really like them!
MrNobody - love the way it all ties together, the hair and armour with the basing
Ghost_Hedgehog- perfect literal interpretation!
inmygravenimage - great bunch of starport ne'er do wells - really like these.
Geifer - it's a dark colour scheme, but you've highlighted really well, and the big droid's eyes really pop!
CancelledApocalypse - Lovely yellows, which is always a challenge
Jadenim - Convincingly goopy, you've captured the 'run over by a milk float' look of the movie!
KidCthulhu - Great band, nicely themed
Nevelon - I really like the metals on this one
JoshInJapan - some really good shading on these, helmets/hats especially
Yo7 - Good idea to go red - I think if he'd been all metallics, he would be a bit dull. But the red works!
Boringstuff - I like that the metals are kept nice and dark, rather than shiny; makes them look like they mean business
401st - Really like this guy - just very atmospheric!
kurhanik - Solid bunch of greenskins - some great work on the basing too
Tallandra - Good looking techmarine, nice, bright reds
Gulgog TufToof - the OSL really works well on this guy!
Vejut - What can I say, I sculpted them, so I love them however they look! Thankfully, they look good
Pariah Press- The colour choices here really tie the mini together well
ZergSmasher - Nice flesh, and the banner looks great!
Midget Gems - Really nice work, on the skin especially
Midget Gems Jr - Fantastic to see the next generation of hobbyists coming through! Excellent stuff.
Midget Gems Jr Jr - as above!
Maharg- love the yellow and black here, it's just really well done
Viterbi - great pics, with the terrain / backdrop really adding to it. And I like his stained outfit

cheers
Michael

Pariah Press: All the variations of blue add a lot of visual interest to what would otherwise be a very simple paint scheme. Do you name all of your models?

The blue bits were super-easy to paint: a white undercoat followed by diluted blue ink.

I generally name all of my 40K models because I run skirmish games with them and it helps the players to match the model to the character sheet I've created for that character.

Thanks for taking the time to write feedback to everyone, JoshInJapan, Daia T'Nara, Midget Gems, and Lovejoy!

JoshInJapan - awesome models, very well painted with a very cool backdrop.

That wallpaper-dollhouse project sounds fun.

The ashigaru models are definitely Of Their Time, but they get the job don.

Thanks. Participating in this monthly challenge has really inspired me to improve my painting. Looking at the work of better painters than me has made me a lot more aware of lighting, and it came together pretty well on these dudes' helmets.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Painting total as of 3/28/2024: 21 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

In second, CancelledApocalpyse with a pair of Eldar, one of whom may have Seen this podium finish coming!

And taking the win, Lovejoy's regimental advisors, from miscast rescue to victory!

Thanks as always to all the entrants, and all those who left comments, votes and feedback!

Bravo! to the winners this month. Every one a masterpiece.

I’d also like to shout out MrNobody’s Tau Pathfinder and inmygravenimage’s Sci-fi Civilians as two of
My favourites this month. Both very different painting styles but each perfectly suited to the subject.
Maharg’s Techmarine and an Apothecary were also, I though quietly brilliant. Just really sharp work and very cleanly executed.
