I'm surprised this hasn't been talked about here yet. Brotherwise games is doing a Kickstarter for official miniatures of the key Stormlight Archive characters.

I would imagine a lot of the backers are not your traditional miniature wargame hobbyist, which could mean this could lead a lot of new people into the hobby.

The Stormlight archives series are good books.

Great books. Great author.

These could be interesting.

Not a fan of the style they've chosen for the pre-painted ones; makes them look like toys or poor examples of budget-end D&D miniatures. Other than that, there's some very nice sculpts in there. The material quality might be the deciding factor; I see they've unlocked a higher quality plastic mixed in as a Stretch Goal; if I had to take a guess, that's going to be for the weapons in particular because RIP if some of those swords were in board game quality PVC. Would expect these to be somewhere round the SOIAF range from cmon in terms of quality.

I wish they would post proper images of each miniature on the KS site. 360s would help a lot.

Also, are the random soldier only available as STLs?

I agree. The painting is a little to smooth and uniform.
They've sent some 3d printed prototypes to painters. This is the 72mm Dalinar. It looks pretty good.

The 4 random soldiers are available as a $15 add on but for some reason the Chull and the random shard bearer are only in the STL.

According to them they already unlocked a bunch of stretch goals on day 1 but are spreading out the reveals to something every 2 days. They already announced Lopen as and addition to the first pack.

The only Kickstarter I've ever backed was Brandon Sanderson's secret novels. This might be my second. I do love the Stormlight Archive.

Fantasy book series by Brandon Sanderson. I’ve not read them yet but I’m working through some of his other stuff and it’s pretty damn good. I got a big chunk of Stormlight as a leaving present from a work colleague so I’ll be doing it at some point.

An extremely popular epic fantasy series written by Brandon Sanderson and part of his MCU style universe called the Cosmere. Last year Brandon ran the most successful Kickstarter of all time for the 4 novels he secretly wrote during lockdown.
3 of the four novels from that Kickstarter are also set in the same universe and one of them stars a character who is getting a mini in this Kickstarter.

Stormlight is definitely an undertaking and it even helps if you've read some of the other series as there's some surprising links.

I am still concerned about the models themselves. "PVC plastic" is vague, and tells us little about the actual materials and processes used. They could be good models, or they could be cheap boardgame pieces. I really dislike the lack on transparency on their part regarding exactly how the models will be made. I know they won't go full plastic kits, as they promised all models will be fully assembled.

The sculpts look nice but I'm unfamiliar with the underlying IP. Is this the series of books/author that got tens of millions in crowdfunding last year? What level of technological advancement is this society? The clothes seem like a mix of 17th to 19th century for the most part with a few notable exceptions (like Puff Daddy cream suit guy with the loafers).

This is from the same setting as the massive Kickstarter last year.

The Stormlight Archive is set on a world called Roshar that is currently in a early industrial age. The world is constantly damaged by a massive storm that travels all the way round the world every year, to the extent that the primary form of life are crustations that can hide in their shell when the storm comes along. There are a couple of those in the Kickstarter.
The people of Roshar can literally catch lightning in a bottle and infuse things with light from the storm including their money. The Stormlight also powers their suits of armour giving them superhuman strength. A lot of the world's magic is created by the bond between humans and tiny magical creatures called Spren. They are a bit like Tinkerbell and you can see a mini of one.

Almost all of Brandon Sanderson's books take place on different planets within the same universe and certain characters can travel between them including one of the minis here.
There is also a magical sub realm on Roshar and the angular looking creature is from there.

Something that may be with pointing out: for those who have not read the books, these models are spoilers. They will spoil things that occur in later books.

Yeah, I got initiated into the whole Cosmere by the same colleague so I know to look out for links to Mistborn etc. I’ve done Mostborn era 1 and Warbreaker, and I’m gonna do Mistborn 2 trying to time it with the new one out in November, and then I’ll start Stormlight.

Yes, the only STLs are the generic solders and a Chull that looks like it's eye stalks and antennae are too thin and will just break.

Yeah, they confirmed that only the generic stuff would be available in STL because they're worried about piracy.

Which is sad, because people like me who are voicing concerns about how the models will be made, would be singing their praises if I could just buy all the STLs and print them myself.

Yeah, I'm not really interested in paying shipping charges from waaaay over there just to get some minis.

We're still in a bit of a Wild West for 3D printing and licensed IPs are a bit wary of how easy it is to just upload the STL files somewhere to give everyone access. I personally think the vast majority of people with printers in the hobby as willing to pay for STLs but there's still a sizable amount that won't and 3D printing still is too new, in terms of popularity, for people to really gauge what the effects those that would have no issue uploading STLs they bought to free sites (I know there are some in Russia/Eastern Europe) really have on the market.

Modiphius is really the only one dipping their foot in this with a large IP, Fallout, and that's only terrain and greebles. They did just release all their Jon Carter minis as STLS this week though but that's not a very prominent IP.

Thanks for the rundown. I appreciate it. Though I'm still left wondering about the guy with the really comfortable shoes in the duel diorama.

IMO, If it's not a popular IP, anything freely distributed is free advertising.

Anyway, while I'm seeing extensive boardgame (and art asset) experience, I'm seeing nothing with miniatures. Boardgame manufacturers, of course, do have experience with miniatures, but if you'd gonna fund, you better ask questions, especially if you're looking for hobby-grade plastic. Good luck!

They just added a mini of the rock (not the wrestler) as their lastest stretch goal. At their current cadence I expect there to be 8 minis in each set by the time they're done.

They have also said that while these minis aren't currently part of a game, there are plans for something down the line.

The Stormlight Archive is a planned series of ten novels, four of which have been released. The individual books are so thick that jokes are often made about them being deadly weapons. Roshar has already been described, so I'll leave that. The series is part of a larger setting called The Cosmere, which many of Sanderson's works are set in. Each world within the Cosmere has one or more magic systems that are independent from the magic systems found on other worlds. Roshar's magic is just coming back, so I won't talk about it (doing so might spoil). The magic systems in Warbreaker is built around breaths. Each person is born with one, and it can be given away. A person with a large number of breaths can use them to animate inanimate objects. Meanwhile, on Scadriel (which is where the Mistborne books take place), magic is passed down through heredity. Your typical allomancer, a misting, can swallow a specific metal (and only that metal) to generate a magic effect that's linked to the metal. A Mistborn is an allomancer that can swallow all of the magical metals. All of Sanderson's books have well-defined magic systems (even though the reader might not have enough info to understand them), and typically more and more elements of the magic systems are revealed over the course of the novels. There are other worlds and magic that have been shown, but the examples above are sufficient for a quick overview. The thing to keep in mind is that each world is effectively a different setting. So Scadriel is independent of Roshar. But as has already been noted, there are some characters that can travel between worlds. Warbreaker in particular has had an outsized influence on the Stormlight Archives story, with three prominent characters from the novel appearing on Roshar (though if you haven't read Warbreaker, it won't detract from Stormlight Archives).

Finally, all of the Cosmere novels have a fellow named Hoid. He might have a cameo. Or he might have a more significant role. He might not even appear under his own name. But Hoid is *always* going to show up.

So, Stan Lee? I can appreciate that.

More than that. Stan Lee was purely there for cameos and amusement's sake. Hoid is a distinct character who was present at the foundational event of the Cosmere, and has his own goals and plans. At least one of those goals ties in closely with the events in the Stormlight Archives, and he has a particularly strong role as a supporting character in that series. His identity, as those who've read more than the first novel already likely know
Spoiler:
is Wit, and he's in the second set of figures in this kickstarter.

Meanwhile, in the most recent Wax and Wayne novel, Bands of Mourning, he
Spoiler:
had what seemed like a cameo appearance when he shows up seemingly at random just long enough to throw a coin at the protagonist and then disappear. It's not until the epilogue that the protagonist realizes that there was more to this strange encounter than he'd realized at the time.

And in the first Wax and Wayne novel, Alloy of Law, alert readers will spot him at the banquet. This one does appear to be an actual cameo, though, as he doesn't appear to do anything of note.

IIRC, if the Mistborn novels ever get far enough along, Hoid is supposed to be the protagonist of the third planned Mistborn trilogy. But that schedule was laid out back before Sanderson realized he was going to write the Wax and Wayne books, which weren't part of his original plans.

Same. They don't even feel like they match the artwork in the books. Just very strange. And Brotherwise does not inspire confidence making the materials a stretch goal.
