I'm looking for advice on how to rectify paints that you have over-thinned.

I added too much medium to a paint so naturally it ended up losing most of its coverage. I was thinking of leaving it with the lid opened for a while so that the air can dry it out a bit?

Has anybody tried this out?

And this is why you don't thin paints in the bottle. I'm assuming that's what's happened? I have no solutions as to un thinning your paint, bar finding some powder pigments and adding that, but unless you get the exact colours, it will affect the hue. Take this as a lesson though, thin your paints on a palette, or in the airbrush cup, or literally anywhere other than the bottle.

I'll always add Vallejo Airbrush Thinner to my Citadel paints before I transfer them to dropper bottles, it generally saves me time in the long run.

This is the first time it's happened in around 200 paints though, one in 200 isn't enough to put me off just yet.

Ah ok, Aye I suppose adding a drop or 2 for something like that is reasonable. I thought you'd been trying to pre thin the paint in the pot. You could try letting it sit in the air but I'm not sure how effective that would be. I suppose my best advice would be to buy another pot of whatever colour it is and add some of that

Leaving the lid off will evaporate out the water, but possibly not whatever makes up the medium.

Safest way to fix it would be to buy another pot of paint and mix I guess, though I suppose that’s just what you’d do anyway if evaporating it doesn’t work…

If that happened to me, I'd get a fresh new pot to make me a new one. I'd still keep the less covering one just to be sure, for layering work less coverage might be actually benefeicial sometimes, I'd just make sure to label the less covering one clearly so I'd not use it accidentally.

I think paint is made up of medium, water and pigment. So scientifically (and I ain’t no sciencetist) I would have thought if you add more medium or water then to thicken it up you need to add pigment

So I left the dropper bottle open for 12 hours, it seems to have helped quite a bit.

I was convinced that I'd need to buy another pot so I'm quite pleased.

Oh Canada!

Medium doesn't evaporate, so there's no way to take it back out again. One has to be very cautious about evaporating paint because it can kick-start polymerization of the whole pot, and it'll go grainy or stringy later on.

The best way would be to add pigment back in, but the average consumer doesn't have access to artist's grade pigments and certainly not the blends specific to a given paint pot. Personally I'd have added ink and just kept the pot as a translucent version for layering but I'm happy to hear your evaporation went well. You're braver than I!
