Has anyone tried this? I just had a thought that it might have nice effect on the contrast paint making the colours more vivid, especially the highlights.

I've used it over gloss metallics, and somewhat inadvertently over a gloss to satin white.

It thins them out, so you see more of the underlying colour (if that's white, it means the final colour will be more pale and desaturated).

That said, Contrasts actually do a reasonably good job of spreading well over a range of surfaces, so I've been somewhat surprised how little difference it makes, but it does make some difference.

I don't think Army Painter SP do as well as Contrasts as spreading, so if you're using those instead of GW Contrasts YMMV.
