Been Around the Block

Started this in January, wanted to finish it for my birthday. A little early, so here it is.

Forgot to blackout the eye-slit, and decided not to paint all the glyphs (undecided on a klan, might sell it instead... maybe).

The whole thing uses only the parts from 3 boxes of Kill Zone Octarius terrain (which I bought from BitzGalaxy before the new box was released, AU$330 in total) and a Big 'Ed Bossbunka (from Emerald Hobbies (a third party retailer) for AU$88). The paint is all Tamiya, I spent about AU$110 on paint, AU$50 of which was wash, which I bought from Frontline Hobbies. So about AU$528 in total. The build took about two solid weeks from design to finish (almost exclusively thinking about it, then pinning with screws) the painting took about 12 hours over 9 months.

It's about 45cm wide, 35cm deep, and 50cm tall. The top of the head (not the crew) is the same height as the top of a Warlord Titan's carapace. I'd use it as a Warlord. 1 Sunfury Plasma Annihilator, 1 Mori Quake Cannon, 2 Dual Turbo Laser Destructors and 2 Ardex Deffencer Maulers and Lascannons (from the Big ' Ed Bossbunka kit). The weapon barrels are all compatible with the Sector Mechanicus terrain (the Alchomite Stack) in case you want long phallic guns - I might do this with mine.

The head, arms, feet and layers of the body are all detachable (bolted together, blended into the paintjob) and can break down into an entire table of orky terrain. There is also 1 building corner leftover from the original parts. The crew and battlewagon are just for scale and not attached.

There are two bolts for each foot, so it doesn't wobble at all. Its weight is perfectly centered between the feet. Pick it up using the floor beneath the belly-kannon, like picking up a tray of wine glasses.

I suspect this is what these kits were originally designed to do. It's obvious GW planned to release them together, but the schedule just got messed up by covid. Each kit was a dream to work with and paint, and the double use as a titan and terrain makes the project a reasonable thing to own. This project used almost no converting at all (a small pipe in each armpit needed cutting).

I don't know why more people don't make these? They're awesome.

I want to post some more pictures, but I had to scale these down. They're stills from video.

That's looking great!
Do you have the scenery to show that it will be used with? That table must be huge.

That is amazing.

I love that it has a full interior in the back, it reminds me of my old Guns of Navaronne toy soldier set. I wish I still had it, it would make a heck of an IG base.

It really does. I imagine the "playset" vibe could even be used in-game, ala the battlewagon. The machine itself would make good terrain on its own, as all the gantries can house orks of varying base-sizes. The leftover bitz from the terrain kits can be used to fill the empty spaces inside, or the whole thing can carry about 60 ork boyz.

I'm a little reluctant to disassemble it before my birthday. It takes about 20 minutes to put together or take apart, but that's... 20 minutes you know?

Trying to post some more images here, for better size comparison and details.

Really incredible work.

I do keep wanting to see some color in it though if you sell it, a buyer can add color in their particular prefferred tribe. Really appreciate that it breaks down into separate terrain also. Brilliant.

Oh man, I had the same one and also regrettably got rid of it. Fantastic toys. I think I somehow had the original Marx version that my folks found in a resale shop, but I remember seeing the recast in stores too in the 90s. Just sold off the last remaining Marx figures from that playset this year that somehow had survived in my collection 20 years after the playset was sold.
