Finished these guys today. I'm still trying to figure out what the best way is to do these bases - previously I cut the styrene sheet on top flush with the edge of the base and then tried to make it seamless with filling and sanding, but that just never came out clean. This looks a bit cleaner and it certainly takes half as long to do, so if nothing else it's a more viable solution for a whole army. We'll see.

Ok, this thread was still on the first page when I finished these guys and there's more coming because I'm on a major Death Smurfs streak, so I'm renaming it and just posting all my new Ultras here.

Up next are the Eradicators, also from the Indomitus box and probably the ones that make me wish the most I'd waited for the proper multipart versions... I still like these, but the expensive ones are definitely better and I may have to get a unit just cuz.

Notice also that the bare head is on the wrong model because I accidentally slapped the Sergeant marking on that one's pauldron and by the time I noticed it was already cured and I couldn't get it off anymore. Not a problem for that model, but the one I had to swap the helmeted head for looks a bit weird from some angles now because the highlight isn't entirely in the right place. Sigh.

These are really well done.
Love the soft blue and muted gold trim you chose for them.
The details and weathering are looking great to.

Thanks! I spent a long time trying out different gold paints before I settled on this one - it's Vallejo's Metal Color Gold, which is so light it's almost silver, but if you do a lot of weathering, it's twice as important to maintain enough contrast or the models just look like brown blobs at tabletop distance.

...and here's the Judiciar. My first reasonably successful attempt at glazing on large areas, and I've finally got my basing process down to where I'm happy with it and it's easily replicated.

...and here's another squad of Assault Intercessors. I don't want to pat myself on the back too much, but I really like these a lot better than the ones I did a year ago, so if nothing else it feels like painting Death Smurfs until I'm blue in the face (haha) has helped me refine my technique quite a bit. Also, definitely my best attempt at a face so far on that Sergeant - maybe next time I'll try actual irises, ahem.

Anyway, I'm pretty happy with these guys, but I also feel like I need to paint something that isn't blue now. More pics in my gallery, and sorry for the self-indulgent amount of pics here, but these dudes took a lot longer than I expected and I have to get it out of my system, ahem.

Nice batch of warn and brutal Ultras.

It’s good to break up the blue, just to stay sane. It’s one of the reasons I paint my phobos guys in camo. And have multiple other armies. But it always comes back to painting blue…

Yeah, I think I'll finish up my Shokkjump Dragsta first... in red. I do a lot of different stuff in general, I couldn't just constantly be painting Ultramarines, as much as I like them. And I do like painting them, the recipe I've come up with is pretty much all techniques I really enjoy doing, so it works out, but everything gets old after a while.

So since my original plan to finish the Indomitus box before 10th edition rolls around has failed resoundingly (the Necrons are done, though), I'm starting the final push to complete 1000 playable points with the last thing I'll paint from that box for a while, followed by a unit of Intercessors and one of Terminators. This guy was really fun to paint, and I think it's made me get my mojo back.

Hahaha, turns out that feeling of having my mojo back was just the Chaplain yelling something about purging heretics

I love how that industrial street has a random rock in the middle of it.

Jokes aside I really like it. The face work is excellent, I like the touch of the discolored area around the mechanical parts.

One thing I noticed is that up close the paint looks really grainy and I think it is making it look more saturated then it really is.

The graininess is mostly my semi-botched attempt at doing a zenithal highlight with an airbrush on the black. It doesn't show IRL unless you look at it with a magnifier and I still think it looks better than if I'd just kept it flat black all over, but that's the one part of this paintjob I'm not too jazzed about.

And yeah, that stupid tactical rock just doesn't fit my standard basing scheme, and I think I should've integrated it more with some additional rubble around it. I'm already thinking I might crack him off that base eventually and do a better job with that, but I kinda also just wanted to be done with this guy.

To be fair, nothing quite encapsulates the spirit of 40k like chaplains. They are post-human combat monsters who so fervently hate the heretic, mutant, and xenos that they get tangable combat benefits from it, as well as everyone nearby. The live at the intersection at mystic superstition and sci-fi. It’s hard not to paint one and sucked back into the over the top glory that is 40k.

And this guy is so hard-core that he’s not going to let something like having his skull caved in slow him down. Walk it off, get a new one, and go back to purging heretics!

I love painting chaplains, and that model in particular was one of my favorites from the Indominus box.

I was thinking exactly that when I looked at the finished mini yesterday. This guy is so 40K, it's like they heard you like 40K so they put some 40K in your 40K. And definitely also my favorite Space Marines character model in the Indomitus box. I think it's that facial expression - the skull masks on the other chaplains are really cool too, but this guy looks like he's shouting every Space Marine catchphrase about death and duty and heretics you've ever heard all at once.

...and a squad of Intercessors. It weirds me out a bit that I originally developed my Ultramarines recipe just about 2 years ago, making a big fuss on here, and I'm only now back to painting the Intercessor model that it all started with, and also only now getting close to the 1000 point army this was supposed to be. Anyway, the fifth guy in the group picture is from that first batch in September 2021, and I'm pleased to see they still match reasonably well even though I also feel like I've refined a lot of things and gotten better at painting these guys, if I do say so myself. Now I've got a squad of Terminators to do and that'll be this army done, finally.

He says, looking over at another 1500-ish points of unbuilt marines.

Finished this squad of Terminators today, and that completes my first 1000 points of Ultramarines. Originally I was going to just paint up the whole Indomitus box, but since I unsurprisingly didn't manage to finish that before 10th edition rolled around and I was instantly in love with these guys I said screw it. No army plan ever makes it to completion unchanged. And I wasn't disappointed - these models are absolutely fantastic, and if I didn't have a Necron army to finish and three other projects lined up after that, I'd just buy another box of Termies, honestly.

I was going for a "Kirby Krackle" effect on the power sword, after trying the usual lightning pattern, not pulling that off, painting over that with metallics and then getting pissed because I didn't want the sword to be that plain. I like the idea, but I'm going to have to do a few more until I'm 100% happy with the execution. Going to stick with this for my power swords from here on out, though.

And here's the whole army at the current 1000 points. Yes, it needs vehicles. And another Dreadnought.

Thanks - it's funny, I really landed on the red for that helmet by accident. I've been trying and mostly failing to get nice looking helmets by airbrushing Vallejo reds and oranges, and here I actually airbrushed it white like the rest first because I'm an idiot and had somehow convinced my brain it was meant to be white with a red stripe. Then I thought, hey, maybe if I just spray a red contrast paint over this I can get it to look red and maintain the shading and boom, turns out I finally have a red that looks good with the blue I've been using.

Good thing I don't intend to stop here, I'll have more sergeants to use that recipe on, now that I finally figured it out when I hit 1000, hahaha.
