I'm 2 episodes in, a very solid start. Glad to see some science fiction that doesn't follow all the usual routes. I've read a bit of William Gibson, many years ago, and am inspired to read this one now. The first major reveal took me by surprise, and I'm a cynical bugger, so bravo

p.s: Aelita's accent (what most of us would call a strong London accent) is funny because I'm positive in 70 years time, that old East End accent will be completely gone. Standard London these days is Roadman. TV & Film studios haven't caught up yet, the change has been that quick.

So I watched the first 2 episodes of Amazon’s The Peripheral. They are taking some pretty massive liberties and playing fast and loose with the source material. But I can’t really hold that against them. Gibson’s writing style is classically 3ish seemingly unrelated threads that don’t come together until the second half of the book (if that). Not a format that would work particularly well for serialized television. The modern audience does not have the attention span to sort out the details and would WTF out long before the payout. The Peripheral is more straight forwards, so should translate better. Helped by the changing of the plot to something with a stronger hook. Less of the drip of clues to figure out who the players are and what they are up to, more hitting the ground running. Enjoying it so far; would recommend.

Sounds good - I'll bump it up my watch list.

The context of the story changes when the time difference is made clear in the book. Yet, it is announced in the trailer.

I'll see how the show goes, but none of Gibson's books have been translated too faithfully, as far as I have seen of them.

Did they try anything else besides Johny Mnemonic?

Not a lot, but:

New Rose Hotel (short story)
Tomorrow Calling (TV Short) (short story "The Gernsback Continuum")

Neuromancer never happened, being 'unfilmable'.

The Peripheral is rattling along quite nicely.
There are a few extra characters, as the RI was not mentioned much (if at all) in the book. That's expected for a TV series though, as you need someone to boo at when they come on screen. Others have not appeared yet, and I expect they won't.

But, it's worth sitting through so far.

I’m still enjoying it, but it is a bit off the source material at this point.

They have a few run ins with the Met, and mention them in context of the checks and ballances of the Klept, but where is Lowbeer?

The source of the stubs was never detailed (I’m guessing that will be the reveal if/when the next book comes out) but now we have faces and an organization.

And a ton of little things.

Amusingly, it’s incredibly on-brand for the source. Once the stub is established, futures diverge. What happened in one’s past is not required to be the future of the other.

Thankfully I’ve never read the source, forgot it was even mentioned to have one, so divergences mean nothing to me.

Me and my fiance have been feeling entertained by this. A refreshing mix of Amurican & UK television narratives
