Is 'Eavy Metal Calling?

UK

Welcome all to the 93rd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favorite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds.

This month, the theme is the long-awaited 'Snazzy'. This theme calls for your fanciest minis, decked out in finery and frippery and all manner of shiny things. From a well-clothed noble to an Ork sporting gold teef, the more ostentatious, gaudy and grandiose the better!

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of November and will end at midnight GMT on 30th November. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

My primary entry is the powerfist/plasma pistol captain. I might get the 3 bladeguard vets done as his backup, but honestly I’ve got other things on my to-do list I want finished by the end of the year, so they will probably end up being a multi-month background project while I move other things across the bench.

Mostly, on my phone.

Plan just now is the Spider-Man vs Doc Ock Comic Scene display piece:

It's fairly snazzy, but I plan to further snazzify it by adding plasticard to block out the reverse:

I may also add some blank scenic bases with the scatter you can see in the image which can be swapped in for the character models, making it more usable as scenery. We'll see.

I'm in, but no proof picture yet. I have a few options, none of which are built yet. I'll have to make up my mind what I feel like doing first.

Nehekhara lives! Sort of!

Snazzy WOOOOOOOO!

My entry is Ordo Malleus Inquisitors.

I don't know if I'll finish both, but one of these is definitely finally getting done!

Ooh, all the snazz on parade is making me second-guess the snazziness of my pick.

Maybe I’ll just have to attempt some snazzy painting too. (Not my strong suit)

I'm operating with a disadvantage this month - I mean, besides not being a very good painter - in that Dreamlight Valley's got my attention something fierce, but hopefully I'll drag myself away long enough for at least the middle of this trio:

Her and her coat (I've got plans for the coat) are the entry I've had in mind ever since this topic came up; the others I figured I may as well toss into the proof pic just in case since I haven't gotten around to putting paint on them yet, and Emperor's Children are inherently snazzy so I guess they count.

Remodelling begins!

Plasticard greebled with bits left over from other MCP kits - newsstand awning roller used for the winch arm mechanism, door frame details as pillar caps - plus a mystery junction box that's maybe Mantic? I'll layer up the styrene more and then the plan is to use Vallejo Plastic putty, which I've never used, to fill the gaps and then using a mix of gs and texture paint to create the cracked stone work.

I've also thrown a couple of extra base with scatter together, again, so it works. The base lines also (broadly) line up with that of the terrain's surface.

Here's mine and scale creep is real.

As Rick James said "Spook is hellva drug"

I have 95 Calgar with newer honor guard.
I will need to make some type of tactical rock to make him more imposing.

Find a big rock. There might have been a little scale creep over the years

I figured the Archivist from Blackstone Fortress is a pretty snazzy guy, with high tech guns and armour and a penchant for very cool, rare archaeotech:

Going to add a second Burrows & Badgers creature to my entry.

I’m painting him up in full Navy uniform, stolen of course but sure you wouldn’t steal it if it wasn’t snazzy. I’m going to paint lots of snazzy gold trim on those cuffs and lapels.

The cat duelist is almost complete already. Which means I must have rushed it and need to leave it a few days to let my eyes forget what they were thinking. Always worth revisiting with fresh eyes and different light.

This is the commisar from Volume 2 of Bandai's 40K gashapon chibis. Commissars are often pretty snazzy dressers, but I reckon this one could be snazzier.

Proof picture (he's been dismembered for painting).

WIP:

Base layers going down. Making good progress. Hopefully I can get him done early and try to catch up with the other guys, but the way the end of the month tends to rush up, I wanted to make sure I got a good start on him.

In case I don't finish the big project, I've done something totally different: a Spesh Mehrine!

This is a Luna Wraith, a homebrew chapter that Instagrammer reaper.hobbies created.

I don't use a lot of turquoise, so this was great for practice. Might use it for the crew of the Cygnus (for Core Space).

I enjoyed doing the chest and sword too, starting with an orange base and working up through to tan (though less so on the sword) - maybe should've gone for retro hazard stripes, but never mind.

I can always revisit it - thoughts?

So, I was probably over-thinking this a bit... I had 'Snazzy' down as needing lots of bling, but based on the other stuff people are doing, I reckon I should be OK with some Burrows & Badgers pirates. Proof pic:

Incidentally, theCrowe is also painting one of these... is that still alright for me to do it as well?

I settled on Director Krennic. He has a cape, he must be snazzy!

It's definitely alright, but it will be a fight to the death. Two badgers enter, one badger leaves!

That sounds perfectly reasonable to me... I think friendly painting challeneges that don't end with at least some maiming just aren't trying hard enough!

I'll get on with painting them...

Unexpectedly, back in a 40k place, so here's some more Snazzy concepts. I really enjoyed painting up a marine, but then I decided to see whether I could smush together some AoS and SM and make it work.

Um... Yeah. I mean I'm by no means the first to try it but still. What with the lightning and the lions and all, I reckon these guys are DA successors - Storm Lions, Calibanite Lions or something. I did consider The Order, like the ancient Knights of Caliban (also an option) but that has quite... Heretical undertones: they all go a bit Fallen, apart from the Ravenwing. Who knows, maybe I'll incorporate AoS critters, though I think of them more as monster hunters, tracking down chaos beasties. Open to suggestions. I do know that they're NOT going to have a chapter badge per se - though each will feature a lightning bolt on a pad (a bit like the extinct Stormwing, hence Storm Lions being in the mix ) but instead personal heraldry comprising lions and lightning. This also means I can potentially harvest/print White Scar upgrades etc if I'm so minded. I mean it could be that these are Loyalist Death Shadows (fallen Lionsguard) which also works with the colours.

With these few finished I feel like I've fallen behind again, anyway I have undercoated all 3 and made a flat boulder for commander macragge, just have to find the gesso or it will melt with the glue.

Here are the first two models in my entry: Toyotomi Hideyoshi (R) and Hidetsugu (L)

There are a few more models in this set, none of whom are named. This will give me a little more freedom in how I paint them up. There are a few more photos in my P&M Blog
