Wow. A lot of spooky this month. I love how everyone took a different approach to the same theme.

Daia T'Nara :I love the contrast between the purple/turquoise on the bases and the earthtones on the models themselves, with the loincloths to tie it all together. A very effective technique, I think.

Mr. Nobody: The vivid purple is great, of course, but I also really like your approach to the wood. It looks quite realistic.

theCrowe: I always get a kick out of your sculpts, and this month is no exception. Kudos to trying OSL-- I have never been satisfied with the results I get when I try it.

KidCthulhu: Your plaguebearers/hungry ghosts are delightfully gross, right out of a Buddhist Hell scroll painting.

Nevelon: Three generations of Hive Tyrant look great in a group like this. The updated color scheme on the old metal tyrant makes the model look much better than the bright, comic-booky colors of the 90's.

Yo7: The face may be a little grainy, but the wood and the rusty scythes are top notch.

SirOllox: These little monsters are cute as the dickens! I like the bold red robe against the lavender on the spidergirl.

Tallandra: I am continuously amazed at just how much stuff modern SM models have all over them. I like your choice of off-whites and pale reds on the shield and standard-- it really sells the age of these artifacts.

ZergSmasher: You did a great job making these guys look ethereal. Did you think about adding some glow to the bases, as well, to really sell the "glowing from within" aspect?

Lovejoy: The fleshtone on the vampire/werewolf/beastie is great-- realistic and gross at the same time. I like the mottling as well. Also, the flaming sword looks great.

Hankovitch: What a cool idea! Did you sculpt those flames yourself? If so, wow!

401st: I don't play video games (in any format), so I can't identify what your model is based on, but it looks great. The dust on the lower legs is a great touch, as well.

me: I've had this model for a long time, but never could figure out how to approach it. I ended up doing a basecoat of AP Chaos Red, followed by progressively lighter overbrushes of Waagh Flesh+Necrotic flesh, using only downward strokes. It looks horrible in Dakka Superzoom, but I'm please with how it looks out at tabletop distances.

Geifer: The pale colors are a nice choice for this model-- not every vampire needs to dress in black and red! The golds are especially effective.

Pariah Press: I like your choices of classic Space Zoat colors-- green and bone-- with just enough spot color to really draw the eye.

Jadenim: Your very simple technique worked great on these models! I do love me some fishmen...

darkkt: Wow, that flouro green really pops! Kudos for bringing it up from grey-- I don't think I could have pulled that off.

Rybrook: These guys have simple but effective paintjobs that would get a unit ready for the table with enough bling to make them interesting. The highlights on the marines chest eagle is particularly effective.

Vejut: I only just noticed that these guys are posed to be in ranks-- very nice. The similar-and-yet-different patterns on their shields add some personality to otherwise very similar models.

Inmygravenimage: I remember this scene from the comics, and you captured the Mignola colors perfectly.

Maharg: The vivid turquoise armor is great, and I really, really like your work on the loincloth, cloak, and the shaft of that improbably large mace.

Midget Gems: What a fun conversion! Did you have to sculpt on those ears, or did you just cut and glue them? The purple crystals on the bases are a nice touch.

Turaxa: You got some remarkably clean white over that black basecoat-- it must have been a lot of work.

Superlative work all around-- I'll be giving out a lot of votes, once I can finally decide who to vote for!

An excellent assortment, many votes were cast (actually, everyone but myself - I'd feel too awkward - every entry had something or other in it that had me thinking "Yeah!"). I'll try to come back over the weekend to comment on everything, a change of job has meant I no longer spend 2 hours working and 6 hours screwing around on the internet while I'm on the clock nowadays.

Thanks, I wish I could pretend it was on purpose Originally the loincloths were going to be a much paler pink - they're daemonette skin, so same shade I use for them - but with these intricate little 3d printed minis I doubted my ability to get a brush into all the angles and do smooth highlights, so I went with the darker option (really slathering on dark purple contrast paint - I'm pretending that's the colour my daemonettes' skin goes when it's been tanned into leather) since that'd just need a few touches on the most prominent edges.

Thanks, Yeah they are just cut and trimmed grot ears, I went for a purple wash on the skin and wanted to match that with the Crystals as a nice colour combo along with the orange.

Loving the variety and interpretations this month. Picking this up a little late but here are my comments

Daia T'Nar - Very cool bases and nice work on the skin shading
Mr Nobody - Really like these, they have some personality, the purple is such a lovely shade.
theCrowe - they look like very small models, good work on the OSL
KidCthulhu - those plague bearer demon things look disgusting, well done
Nevelon - Nice idea to cover the different generations of models in one entry. good solid painting
Yo7 - dont know what it is but I'm scared of it
SirOllox - really want to write this "Spider girl, Spider girl, does whatever a spider girl does....."
Tallandra - looks like you have put a lot of effort into this guys with some really good attention to detail
ZergSmasher- Very cool effect and perfect for the ethereal and Halloween
Lovejoy - Wonderful diorama, outstanding painting and I also like the focus/out of focus on the models.
Hankovitch - Nice idea and well executed can definitely tell he's a hell rider with your modelling
401st - Very cool model/conversion, Run!
JoshInJapan - I really like this model, well painted and lots of interest points
Geifer - very good transitions between colours/shades. I ifnd my eyes draw to the edges and bottom of the model, a bright spot in the middle/head area would help balance that
Pariah Press - The green has come out really well on this model. looks like quite a beast.
Jadenim - Good scale highlighting technique
darkkt - wow very vibrant colours, that's impressive
Rybrook - solid painting on both models and a nice contract between the 2
Vejut - Human ram headed pike men is a new one for me and I'd definitely be scared of them
Inmygravenimage - really atmospheric piece, you can see the story telling in it.
Maharg - Armour highlights are spot on.
Midget Gems - I had fun, who doesn't like pumpkin headed grots ?
Turaxa - Thats a really interesting model, i can't work out how big or small it is?

A fun month, well done to everyone that entered

Thanks for the comments, guys.

I see what you mean about having a bright spot in the center, but I'm not sure this model has a fitting area for that. I want my bone to look like bone and I chose skin color for contrast with the darker gold and green. I suppose I could have painted the blood drop shaped jewelry bright red, but I wanted to stay away from the blood fetish GW overindulges on. On a mortal I would have gone with a livelier face, but as a vampire that doesn't seem right. She basically doesn't have lower lips because of the fangs, so there's not much I can do with the mouth. And because I like my Egyptian undead, the eye shadow is turquoise rather than, I don't know, perhaps red again. I could have gone with coal, but that doesn't quite draw attention either. Overall it's a bit of a bad mix of my preferences and lack of opportunity on the model.

I like your vampire just the way she is. Not every model needs a splash of color to be effective, and I think your earthy tones work great.

Lots of superb spooky work last month! My favourites were MrNobody and Lovejoy, with extra honourable mentions for JoshinJapan, 401st, Hankovitch and Pariah Press. Absolutely everyone entered excellent stuff as usual, though!

I really wanted to enter last month, but I just didn't have any time. Hoping I'll get something in this month as I suddenly have a week of less stress.

Congratulations to the winners and well done to everyone for producing such varied interpretations of the theme.

Thanks. It took three thin coats, but I was really surprised by how well it covered over black. The paint itself is Daiwa own-brand craft acrylic, so I wasn’t expecting much from it at all.
