Another year, another blog! This time I'm starting early because I have less vacation time, and more minis to do, and really I want to take a more relaxed approach and try out some stuff.

This year, I'm circling right back to old school 40k with the new beakies. When I was a teenager, the RTB-01 box was too darn expensive for me, though I did paint 4 original beakies because my FLGS broke up a set to sell individual sprues. So now that we have new plastic Mk6 armor, Demios Rhinos and Land Raider Proteus in plastic, why not build the army I wanted 35+ years ago? And of course, it's gotta be the OG cover models, Crimson Fists!

First thing was a tactical squad, so I had to give them a Missile Launcher for that RTB-01 street cred. Having to buy the weapons separate kind of sucks, but the guns I wanted - Missile Launchers and Heavy Bolters come in the same box. I also picked up a special weapon box. Maybe giving the squad a flamer would have been more authentic, but I just like Meltaguns. And of course the sergeant gets a power fist.

For these models, I did a black primer and used Liquitex White Ink to do an zenithal highlight. Then I followed with Scale75 Navy Blue, thinned with INSTAR's Water+ 1:3 to make the paint nearly transparent. I didn't do everything right with these models, some zenithal worked better than others, and I had to remix some paint and didn't thin it enough so I lost some underpainting. But when it works, it's a pleasing effect. I used some Secret Weapon Blue Black wash for pin-shading the armor joints and shading the metallics. I really do recommend it, it's very user friendly. Some edge highlighting with Scale75's Mediterranean Blue finished the job. The red hands are all just Mephiston Red, Carroburg Crimson Wash and Wazzdakka Red highlights, though the sergeant's crest is blood angels red contrast over silver.

Using this method, after airbrushing it takes about 1 hour per mini to finish. That was a little disheartening, as my Sisters of Battle took about that long and you'd think marines would be simpler, but painting the silver parts eats up quite a bit of time.

I'm not going to bother with chapter symbols - no way was I buying a ton of shoulderpads and I gave away my Crimson Fists decals years ago. Rogue Trader cover Crimson Fists went without! I may add some chapter symbols to vehicles if the mood takes me.

The next squad was a Devastator Squad. The Nuncio-Vox makes a nice Signum stand-in, and a squad of heavy bolters fits Crimson Fists combat doctrine nicely. I gave them bayonets so that I wouldn't confuse tacticals with devs on the table. Since the squad should be hanging back, a power fist would be unnecessary and it lets me save fists for character conversions later.

All in all, it's been a couple weekends of painting to get to this point. I have stuff on order that hasn't arrived yet, but I'll probably paint some HH dreadnoughts to give these lads some support in the meantime. Rather than build everything at first, I'll probably build then paint each unit, just as a change of pace.

So more progress and some compromises made.

The Leviathan doesn't have a fist! I suppose I could have painted the guns red, but I did the guns separately to make it easier in the first place. Painting it all blue and then having to fill in silver and red areas would have tremendously multiplied the time involved, and vehicles always take me so much time to begin with. I'm planning on a bunch of vehicles so I really need to keep it simple if I want good progress. This guy was a bit of a test bed, and I was worried I wouldn't like the sheer volume of blue on a big model, but I'm actually fine with it because I really like the color!

Awesome bases, in my mind they take me right back to the pages of Rogue Trader!

As a fellow Beakies enthusiast, I salute you! Can't wait to see the Land Raider & Rhinos

Great Beakies- gotta say, I miss the early Rogue Trader days of the hobby. This was a great box set when it came out.

That was the plan!

Luckily, I just got notified that the last parts of my order are ready to ship; they had trouble getting the Rhinos in stock, but with some luck I should have them end of this week/early next.

Sweet! The new deimos Rhino kit is a fun build, as is the Land Raider Proteus plastic AFAIK. I've built my Deimos but haven't started on the Raider yet. Alas, it'll take a good few years until I've managed to paint mine hehehe!

This time, a dreadnought with an actual Crimson Fist.

I decided to make this a bog standard Contemptor rather than a Relic Contemptor. This kit is impressively pose-friendly, though it can make it really hard to paint the shoulder joints if you get ambitious. I only painted the assault cannon separately. The kit does have an annoying feature, in that a lot of the armor corners are actually joints between parts, which makes highlighting really annoying if you didn't overglue the hell out of the mini.

I'll have a second from the HH box, who will get the full Relic treatment with extra guns from the first kit, though I doubt I'll magnetize it - though it does seem fairly easy, I just don't want to futz around too much. Happily, my order finally arrived today, and wow that HH box is heavy!

Finished my first actual vehicle for the motor pool.

I really like the Deimos kit. It's more parts than the old Rhino kit, but that just means the parts aren't so annoyingly warped and the whole thing packs flatter. I think there was only one joint where I didn't really get good connection, which was my fault for not putting some glue in and wrapping an elastic band around it to give it time to adhere. The kit has some options you can't use in 40k; I would have loved to mount a multi-melta or heavy flamer on this thing, but it's more of a 40k army. Still, double combi-bolters (storm bolters) and a Hunter Killer Missile should give it a bit of punch.

And here's a cheeky progress shot. I still haven't dug into the Horus Heresy box proper yet, I wanted to try out a Rhino first. My poor backdrop isn't big enough to handle all these minis.

Oh god these treads are a nightmare. Both for painting and for cleaning up mold lines. I definitely should have painted them separately. Though I did paint the central hull separately from the tread sections, because lots of undercuts are basically impossible to reach otherwise.

The loadout on the LR Proteus is designed to be compatible with the vanilla Land Raider options, so I can use it as a LR or Relic LR Proteus.

It's a bit more compact than I thought it would be, but it's still a big blue brick. I'm going through my Secret Weapon blue-black wash in a hurry, I'll probably have to order more soon.

And so that's the preamble to my Christmas break, which starts this weekend. Time to crack open the Horus Heresy box set and get cracking.

So today I spent about five hours assembling terminators...

It was tempting to make 10 bolter/fist termies, but the claw guys just look cool.

These guys completely kicked my butt.

I thought they would take an evening to paint...nope, nope, it took two, plus some time on the third day to get the basing done and dry. Way over time budget! And I've still got 5 more to paint.

On the bright side, lots of crimson fists in these Crimson Fists.

I can't believe it took me a week to do 10 terminators, but here we are. At least that's over with

And hoo boy do those lightning claws look like cooked crabs in the Crimson Fists scheme.

Also, army progress shot:

I had to move out of the lightbox finally, there's just too much stuff.

Posting just under the wire for the end of 2022, my 2nd tactical squad of beakies. I would have posted earlier, but I had to recharge my camera's battery.

Basically identical to the first squad, because redundancy is good.

Running out of vacation, but I hope to get at least one character model done before I have to go back to my job. I'll continue regardless, but it's nice to have goals.

Well this mini was a bit of a disaster.

I tried to do some fancy psychic glow on the head/neck/weapon because I'm using him as a Librarian with Force Axe, but it didn't work out well and I could either repaint parts or dunk the model in paint stripper. Much quibbling over several days ensued.

Ultimately I didn't want to paint all the excessive knobs/studs all over again and just repainted the areas with my bog standard power weapon effects technique.

Not what I had originally envisaged, but I got way too bogged down in trying to get it right and it was frustrating the hell out of me.

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

These look amazing and I think perfectly channel the spirit of Rogue Trader! If those miniatures were released for the first time today, I think this is how they would look.

This really makes me want to do the same thing, pull out my copy of RT and play the battle from the farm scenario

Thanks, I'm enjoying the project.

The Horus Heresy box is basically an army in a box, with the new points costs it's 1775-ish points minimum. It wasn't hard to pull the trigger with that value!

Looks awesome, specially in the group shots. Very satisfying to see.

Interesting to see the size comparison of the marines vs the LR!

Keep it up!
