A friend recently started a LoV army and we're playing a 1000 point game this weekend. I have absolutely no idea what to expect as I know nothing about this army.

Any general bits of information/tips I should know before facing this army as Necrons?

I usually run an infantry heavy list, building around a blob of 20 Warriors with a Technomancer with Veil of Darkness. May be a bit much for a 1000 point game. I'll probably run some Lychguard and Lokhust Destroyers as well.

Kind of a vague question, but again, I have no idea what to expect from his army. What would you expect from a 1000 LoV army?

All AP-1 is going to be wasted points.

Ahh, thank you, exactly what I was looking for. I looked up their armor found out about void armor. Saved me from having the Vengeful Stars (-1 AP on a 6 to hit) as my entire game command protocol.

That'd actually be useful-going from AP-1 to AP-2 means that you reduce their save, instead of doing nothing.

If you can Ignore Cover, that'd help a lot, combined with AP-2 or greater. Cover plus Armor of Contempt (-like ability) is brutal.

That makes sense, my Gauss Reapers would be -3 instead of -2 on 6s.

But that's at random, though. You're better off avoiding the issue altogether and treating them like slightly less durable Marines but with twice the firepower.

Hitting is also random. Is there a better Protocol that the OP should be using?

To be frank, ignoring cover would be better to select from that Protocol as it's not reliant rolling a specific number and forces the opponent to rethink deployment. Nihilakh getting both Eternal protocols would be the most handy as, to my knowledge at least, Votaan don't really have a lot of ignore cover outside Thunderkyn.

Just go obsec/pre-game move dynasty. CCB, lots of scarabs, skorpekh, lokhust destroyers, wraith. Dont waste points on immortals or warriors. Pick the usual necron secondaries. It doesnt matter if you kill him, or not. Just keep him away from the markers. You might get tabled, but you will outscore him.

Votann armies tend to have turn1 wind-ups, then throw major haymakers turns 3-4. Votann also stink at secondary objectives. Ideally, tailor your list to do a massive alpha strike, then hunker down and weather the storm for the rest of the game. All the while nickel and dime them on the objectives. You might lose on the field, but win on the score cards.

Thanks for the tips everyone!

I really wanted to run my soon to be freshly painted Lychguard, which I've never played before. Wraiths seem to be the more popular choice from what I've been seeing. Think I should hold back on the Lychguard for a higher points game and run Wraiths instead? Lychguard might me better at hunkering down as cuda1179 mentioned.

Ended up being a massive 44-7 victory for the Necrons. Scarabs and Lokhust Destroyers were the heroes, with the scarabs grabbing objectives early and then screening.

I used Undying Legions as my all game protocol. Damn, those re-rolls brought back a lot of Warriors.

So, hunkering down worked then?
