Sword-Wielding Bloodletter of Khorne

Hi Folks,
I've relatively recently picked up an airbrush, using it as my primary method of painting up my Khorne Daemon force. In order to avoid indulging too much in red, I wanted to give my Bloodcrushers (the mounts, not the riders) a nice black scheme. However, I want to add more depth than just straight black, and wondered if I could use the zenithal technique to do this.

Of course, this would involve not having them pure black. My thinking is that I follow my standards technique of zenithal-ing with bone (pleasantly more muted than straight white), and then go over it with a quite dark blue-grey.

But this is all untested, and rather than subject my poor daemon cows to an iso bath, I though I would check in and get your advice. I've found it quite hard to track down any advice on this matter, and the few examples I've seen are crazy light grey; far too much for my liking. I want depth and darkness!

Do you think this process would work? Do I even need to have a bone zenithal, or should I basically zeithal with the grey itself straight up? Does anyone have any better procedure for how to do this?

Thanks in advance!

What I'm now thinking of trying for my own juggernaut is to go from black up to red with a zenithal highlight, and then maybe bring it back down with a contrast black over the top...

Doing black is a lot like doing white, only with better coverage. Like with white, if you just paint something pure black, it looks like you primed it black and forgot to go back and finish it. So like white, where you save pure white for the top highlight, you save pure black for the darkest shadows.

Now where the difference lies is that while really only works well in warm (fading from a yellowish-brown) or cool (fading from blue), black can fade into any color desired. So you basecoat in black, then mix whatever color you like into the black to highlight up from there. Blue or grey is the classic, but green, purple, or even red can work.

The trick is to not make the color in the highlight so strong it overwhelms the black. If it does get too bright, a wash in Nuln Oil should bring it back down.

CHAOS! PANIC! DISORDER!
My job here is done.

Thanks, Vulcan! Looks like my thinking was in line!

And, I agree, a blueish tinge is the way to go over just a straight grey.

Thanks guys!
