Sorry if this is in anyway off topic, but I felt an instant pang of nostalgia for EA's computer adaptation of Space Hulk and thought this would be a good starting point for some SH nostalgia...

Guys, I usually waffle on about the good ol'days( and apologise in advance ) but I remember an issue of White Dwarf with the original EA cover art, and the tales of the Deathwing were captivating. When I first owned my own set of Deathwing terminators - complete with feathers! - I felt complete, then disappointed at my efforts to paint them.

I've yet to own the game itself( always eluded me ) and hoping to see a new edition next year. It would be great if you all share your own SH-related projects, or what you have done to recreate Space Hulk in other systems, such as Kill Team/40K or other non-GW rule sets.

Also, what are your thoughts on this year's GD winning entry?

That mini diorama is aight, but it feels a lil "safe" in the creative dept.. no conversions/kitbashes, very much a faithful Eavy Metal paintjob. Boring would be the word that comes to mind.

Have always loved Space Hulk, and was sad to learn about it's creators' passing some years ago. I feel like 1st edition Deathwing is the pinnacle of Space Hulk tabletop for me, and Space Hulk Tactics is the best computer version of the game. If you already haven't bought it, the next Steam sales (end of the year/winter sales) should be a perfect opportunity to grab it!

I did buy the most recent Space Hulk re-release box, even remember lining up in front of the local GW store to pick up my copy. The re-release has a gorgeous board section, and I like the genestealer miniatures, but feel like the Marine models of that version are too "Blinged Out" for my sensibilities. Much prefer something like the Space Marine Heroes Series 2 Marines, they'd make great alternative playpieces if they didn't have regular bases. Ruleswise, the re-release is a slight backstep, Jervis Johnson tried to fix what was not broken, and ended up making things a bit worse (referring to the "guard" action, Marines didn't need a CC buff), thankfully it still plays pretty faithful to the OG

One day, I'd like to make my own personal "Perfect Collection" Space Hulk master document, which compiles all the rulebooks & missions of 1st edition (minus the Genestealer expansion, which IMHO changed the game too much), including the rules for Chaos Marines and Marines without TDA. Those multimission campaigns in WD mags were always a treat!

You could make an awesome looking Space Hulk board with modern GW plastic terrain, combining Arks of Omen terrain with Zone Mortalis walls, floors, platforms and stairs. Would require massive amounts of tabletop space, and a hefty chunk of change tho!

Thanks for the heads up regarding Deathwing and have now added it to the steam wishlist.

Didn't have the pleasure of Space Hulk, nor its expansions including Genestealer, but we did have the models( from Terminators & Tyranids ) that we used in the Renegade campaign for Space Crusade. That had psychic and hybrid rules, which seemed alright at the time but apparently SC was a more simplistic game than Space Hulk and I guess being so young, we were easily pleased.

It would be fantastic if either Kill Team or Arks delivers a space hulk-like set. Deep down I'm hoping for striking scorpions vs lictors, but if they pulled of terminators vs genestealers, I'd be dipping in the wallet all the same.

Looking ahead, I'm pondering the purchase of the Gene-cults patrol set. I've still got the white dwarf from xmas'17 that featured rules to use those additional models, and I'm assuming that a new edition would follow suit, or the rules might still be compatible. It would also be nice to have the jump on painting for a change, rather than add them to the pile of shame...

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Great idea for a thread SamusDrake

I still have my original/first edition Space Hulk which was purchased I think in the late 80s. I still remember the guy in the local hobby/model shop described it as 'Aliens the board game' - I was immediately sold!

But one thing I always wanted back then was the metal terminator boxset. The plastic originals were fine at the time (and got a lot of use!) but were a bit basic. So, last year I made it a mission to try and track down and get two whole squads (plus extras) of the original set. I paid heavily from eBay for a few, before joining an Oldhammer group - from people willing to sell to likeminded collectors I was able to get the marines for £3-4 each, which was far more reasonable.

Anyway here are a few that were painted up, and had great fun revisiting the game and playing through the original campaign last year. I went for a RT-era Ultramarines colour (making the blue much flatter), and mounted on square bases for use in Space Hulk.

And finally had some fan batch-painting the Stealers!

@Tauist - I agree about 1st edition Deathwing. Just in between the extra marine loadouts, the missions, and even that seminal story inside by Bill King (which is still probably one of my favourite pieces of 40k literature) it was just absolutely spot on. I thought the further Genestealer expansion, while adding a lot more for the Stealer player to do, just started to add a bit too much bloat to the game and swung things around too much. I think it was probably nice at the time for people that had played the core game and Deathwing to the point of destruction.

I also have those metal Indomitus termies from the old box set (well most of them anyway). All still happily unpainted :p They are classic sculpts no doubt, I'm even making a tribute version of that og metal terminator captain mini for my BA army.

Agreed, I suppose the point of Genestealer was to bring new content into the game, because at its peak Space Hulk was immensely popular! I think GW even used to have Space Hulk tournaments. Space Hulk is ideal as a competitive game IMO, as long as missions are played twice, and both players get to play both sides. Kind of strange GW keeps the game under scrarce availability, considering the 40K scene is so heavily ino competitive / WAAC gaming?

Haha SamusDrake that is exactly what my better half said when they saw them! It was really just my boredom of not being willing to paint lots of identical minis, I just cant do it these days.

Completely agree about the suitability of the game for tournaments Tauists, and the game is just so well regarded. Like you say not sure what the argument is against keeping it in production, especially looking at how much used copies sell for these days.

As Hivefleet Jr has left home, our Nids and Orks have bee sent to new generals. Hence my only current project is flashing yellow bulkhead lights (using mini LEDs and Zinge industries clear bulkhead lights) mounted on wall sections fencing in the main routes (using existing cards) for more claustrophobia. I figure if one plays in darkness with just the flashing lights, table swathced in black velvet it will be cool without too much to store.

Still mulling walls but the upcoming Boarding Actions set could be the simplest option. Anyone know when we might get it?

Because, yes, of course we want our Gribblies out again.

Its pretty cool that Space Hulk got unique sculpts for the Marines and Genies, although the bases might not always be ideal for use in 40K.

Arks of Omen! Something has to give! How can they have a boarding bonanza and leave Space Hulk itself out of the fun! Its the damn king of all boarding action games!
