Going to be in a position where I can't use a rattle can or airbrush for a bit so I was wondering what people recommended for brush on primer to get the model ready.

I've used:

Vallejo Airbrush primer (applied with a hairy brush, but usually only on metal models)

Derivan Minis brush on white primer, on plastics

The Vallejo isn't great because of the lack of adhesion a spray gives you to metal, but it does the job if handled carefully and sealed after.

Derivan brush on takes a little fiddling to get nice coverage, but I also haven't found any particular brush on primer to be "great,"

Many people seem to use gesso (white or black) on their minis with success, but I haven't tried it.

after regular GW or AB black primer, I use vallejo black watered down to go over the whole model; if you have the models all prepped and sub assembly, you can prime before your trip and go from there.

Badger Stynylrez works well brushed on, too (though I apply it via airbrush most of the time).

The green stuff world primers are great for airbrush and hairy brush in my experience, they brush on easily and shrink to show off the detail. Good price and so on.

I posted, ages ago, about Vallejo white primer being too thin to brush on. The response was that it’s a different formula in the US and Europe. Don’t know how true that is but I couldn’t use it.
