Hello all. I’m hoping to find some good Christmas movies we can watch without feeling preached at. We have classics like Scrooged, A Christmas Story, Die Hard and Elf. What are your favorite Christmas movies that are more about the “Spirit of Christmas” than the “Reason for the Season”?

Off-theme movies that use Christmas as a backdrop, such as Gremlins, are also welcome. Horror movies, too, although I doubt we’ll watch those with the kid.

While not actually at Christmas I think Groundhog Day encompasses an awful lot of christmas spirit, and it’s Definately on a winters theme.

My general experience is that the more the movie is about 'the spirit of the season', the more likely it is to become preachy.

I think you've already got the best ones listed. Generally they're set during Christmas, not really ABOUT Christmas.

I’d say Elf, Scrooged and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special are all good movies about the Christmas spirit that don’t feel preachy. To a lesser extent, so are Ernest Saves Christmas and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. That’s the kind of thing I’m looking for.

The 1947 Miracle on 34th Street is quite excellent.

Although all but impossible to find (other than youtube) A Muppet Family Christmas is heartwarming and fun.

And for a biting social critique of capitalism and buying your children's love, wrapped up in complete and utter chaotic nonsense, drop Jingle All the Way into the mix. You know it's a Christmas movie when Arnold Schwarzenegger is having a fistfight with Sinbad!
