I was browsing through my bookmarks yesterday, and came across both warseer and advanacedtautactica.

Both seem to have died, or at least had major population drop-off's.

I know khemri died ages ago, as did a lot of the WHFB faction based forums. 40kterra forums too.

How many of the wargaming forums we all used to spread out an enjoy remain?

Because TMP's not worth remembering? It's far more deserving of the descriptor "a hive of scum and villainy".

Yeah, good old TMP. I occasionally visit there to remind myself why I don't visit there.

Terragenesis still exists, but hasn't been active in years.

Bartertown still sees activity.

Frothers still exists, though I can't recommend anyone visit there.

Not a forum, but if you want a grandaddy wargaming site that is still chock full of goodness, Necromundicon still exists as part of Ironhands.com
Sean Patten still updates every once in a long while and I've yet to see a gallery that didn't provide something cool and original to look at.

Funny, my recollection was the exact opposite. I recall Warseer (the successor of Portent) as being relatively erudite, but there was a pie fight in the early aughts and a bunch of members sought greener pastures. I recall visiting dakka and it was overrun by loudmouthed orky people.

When Warseer's civil war died down, I came back and was quite happy. It was only the last weeks-long outage that convinced me to look elsewhere.

I like it here, and it feels cozy and I recognize many friends.

One other site that's not as old as some others but quite valuable to the community. Yakromunda has transformed into
https://yaktribe.games/ but is chugging along as before. Seems even more active now that Necromunda is a thing again.

It's the home of the NCE edition tweak of classic necromunda which is my favorite and also an extensive repository of official and fan material for Necromunda, Mordheim and a variety of other "Specialist" games.

I used to post on Tauonline, but that site seems to be done.

Was a member on 40konline for a long time, but that site has been a shell of it's former self for a few years, and their moderation is oppressive.

Bolterandchainsword seems to have done well for itself, and is still strong.

Didn't always used to be that way. They used to be a big part of the community. They used to do their own very well produced expansions. They did the Badab War before FW did, and there's still stuff from that book - like the way they did the Mantis Warriors - that I prefer over GW's take.

Bolter & Chainsword and Yaktribe are still going strong. The latter has digested the new Necromunda really well and is arguably the best online resource available if you play that game.

I used to enjoy Portent, later Warseer, but found Dakka a bit more easy going so moved here. They still have some really great archive threads, the one on the Eye of Terror write-ups in particular (that tells you how long some of these forums have been around!)

Used to love the Great Crusade forum, was a great little community, it suffered in the early 10s when GW started throwing C&Ds around and from memory a few sites & forums closed down around that time. The forum owner got nervous and changed the site name, started deleting threads and I think it stopped running sometime after that.

I did a quick look and didn't see anything on this.

I did however see a campaign by another board to smear TMP so i wonder if it may have come out of that.

Which is absurd since TMP has enough of its own issues without making $%^& up.

Especially potentially libelous $%^&.

Yeah, BoLS was decent once upon a time. Clickbaity mess now though- the ads on mobile frequently make the page unusable. Unfortunately this also infects Lexicanum.

Looks like the BoLS forum has also finally been deleted. Its userbase died 5-6 years ago now through self-inflicted means (poor moderation) so it was only a matter of time.

I remember old BOLS did an Apocalypse supplement of their own during 5th edition I think, with the likes of the Capitol Imperialis, Armorcast Tyranids, Deathstrike launchers with vortex missiles and other oddities the then-GW releases didn't cover.

An aspect of the miniatures hobby I fear will be lost like tears in rain are old paintjobs. So many old galleries have been lost through hosts disappearing or changing their structure enough to break old link URLs. Looking back and trying to see what the average army looked like in, say, 1999 or 2006 will only get harder as the years go by.

Techniques and conversions that were once commonplace will just go poof once they fall out of fashion and I think that's sad. For example, trying to find examples of the pre-Heresy armies people were making before the actual 30k ruleset existed, based on mostly the "Visions of Heresy" art books, is not very easy at all these days. Does anyone else remember when making "true-scale" marines out of the then-current Chaos Warriors was the style of the times? Or when "the dip" showed up and outraged miniatures painters worldwide?

The supply does not get to make the demands.

There's also the fact that search engines are getting (ok google) more optimised to show new stuff over old stuff. Couple that to it mining all the info about your search history to then show you more of the same even if you don't want it (youtube does that so much now you watch 1 video and BOOM it wants you to watch 50 more on that subject)

That said there's also wayback machines kicking around. So if you know the right places to look you might well find more than you think.
