So I haven't played 40K in like the last 3 editions, but getting back into it now. I managed to get ahold of the new knights xmas set, the Chainbreaker lance. It's got 1 knight and 4 armigers. Before I dive in and start building, what loadouts are usually the "best" to start out with? I will probably try and magnetize as many of the weapons as I can though either way.

Also, I haven't gotten the codex just yet, but are you really supposed to mix knights in with other imperial forces for them to work well? I was hoping to try and stick to an "Only Big Robots" theme for the army. I have enough little men (OK, I'll never have enough, but still).

2 Warglaives and 2 Helverins are fine, although you definitely want to magnetize the Questoris. If you get a second Questoris, then they can share weapons and even go with dual loadouts.

Magnetising a knight is good fun and makes the most of the kit. I’d recommend it.

You definitely don't need to mix with other armies; most armies in 9th work better alone, a move GW made in response to the infamous soup builds of 8th edition. If you want to play competitive, you'll need a second Questoris and possibly a third, plus a few more Armigers. As others have already said a bunch, magnets are your friends with Knights. Use them well.

As for specific loadouts, it really depends on what household and list you want to run. I personally like House Taranis, and a good mix of shooting and close combat. I won a GT back in June with 3 Questoris (Paladin, Errant, Crusader) and 4 Armigers (2 of each type); it should be noted that in a more recent tournament outing I didn't do nearly as well. There are also plenty of successful builds that run only 2 Questoris and 7 Armigers instead. I would recommend having a look through the codex and seeing what grabs you as far as playstyle goes.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I’d also endorse looking into magnetising your Big Knights.

Variety in your list options is a good thing. For most forces it’s can be swap out a squad here or there. But for Knights, it’s A Very Expensive Kit Here And There - unless you take a bit of extra time and a wee bit of money to magnetise them up.

I think they centralised the kits. But if not, or should your local stores have the older kits? Always get the Preceptor kit, as that comes with everything weapons wise, giving you the widest choice of loadouts.

Luckily I have tons of magnets left over from my WFB days. My set came with the Preceptor kit so I should be good there. I was hoping to pick up another Chainbreaker set, but they seem to be totally sold out everywhere except ebay. It was a nice deal, $210 for I think $320 worth of stuff. I've seen it as low as $170 online, but long gone.

Are the Valiant or Castellan any good? I was thinking about getting one of those just because they look a little different.

I never really play competitively, but I just like to have a balanced list ready to go in case I'm ever at a shop playing against someone I don't know.

I am in a similar situation, although I also own a castelan.

There are so many things to consider when building a knights list. But CP management are a good place to start.

At 2000 point if you start with a dominus and 6 armingers you start with 6 CP. That leaves points for a cheap Questor knight.

3 Questor knights also leaves you with 6 CP, that leaves points for 4 armingers.

I would try something like that. Every other army would kill for the ranged armingers. 4D3 shots with D3 is very strong for their points. (While they would kill for it other armies are a bit hesitant to pay 3 CP for it.)
