2023 Event-Exclusive Miniatures – The Commissar’s Duty and Tolgar Split-Eye

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Between Warhammer Fest, the World Championships of Warhammer, the US Open Series, and a string of other major occasions planned throughout the year, 2023 is going to be an absolute whopper of a year for Warhammer events.

Such momentous happenings need exclusive miniatures to match, and the Warhammer Design Studio has gone absolutely wild with the two models that will accompany this year’s calendar of events.

From the 41st Millennium comes The Commissar’s Duty. This vignette depicts an absolutely iconic scene – an Astra Militarum Commissar with his sword planted in the battlefield rubble, standing tall as he delivers the Emperor’s Justice. Is he aiming at a foe, or at a Guardsman who needs to be made into an example?

Out of the Mortal Realms charges Tolgar Split-Eye, a frenzied Darkoath warrior sporting a natty eye-patch and swinging two huge axes. He also comes with an alternative head for building a nameless Darkoath Chieftain, which trades flowing locks for a fine beard.

These likely lads will only be available at official Warhammer events and at selected partner events – and only during 2023. If you miss out this year, you won’t be able to get them at all!

Your first chance to pick them up will be at Adepticon, which is taking place from 22nd to the 26th March in Chicago, IL.

Keep checking back on Warhammer Community and sign up to the newsletter for up-to-the-minute information on all the events running this year.

Well, at least Warhammer Fest will likely mean a lot of these in circulation as it's a real shame that Commissar would be so hard to get otherwise. The Primaris company champion is still a real pain.

Quite like those.

Commissar is understated, but I like it. Also note he’s wielding a pistol…and has another pistol in his holster.

Darkoath is my preferred one of course, and will almost certainly find its way into my collection.

And for those who don't want to use the loot group or encourage scalping, don't forget to suggest to them that they need to do a Made to Order.

Oh the Darkoath is very nice. He'll make a good chieftain.

Oh yeah!

It is a nice model though. Think I’d have preferred a breastplate under the greatcoat though. Minor quibble as it’s just a preference rather than a critique.

The commissar isn’t looking where he’s aiming. I think if he was posed better, I’d like it more

Also his face looks like the heavy from tf2

Might just be how they painted the eyes?

Really liking both of these!

Commissar looks serious, like grim or stern or something.

Darkoath pose looks awesome for Blood Bowl too. Minus axes of course. Maybe.

Stop teasing with more Darkoath! Just give us a full army with the Norsca roster from Total War! Take my money!

I like how the Darkoath has an alternative head and that makes him just a nameless chieftain!

Just a nameless chieftain? It makes him Kratos.

That Commissar is dreadful.

He's got an extra pistol in his single holster.
He doesn't appear to be looking in the same direction as he's pointing his weapon.
He doesn't have a sash.

Marauders are totally baffling.

GW has released a lot of warcry warbands which are all fantastic high detail groups of dynamic models. Each one is an amazing set and each one kind of fills a similar unit slot to the Marauders with slight twists on the stats.

You also have Dark Oath which looked early on like they were going to all but totally replace most of the core Slaves to Darkness models and have leader models already in the army.

Yet GW has kept the Marauders. They've never updated them for StD Nor updated them via Warcry and now it looks like Warcry is going to give each Chaos force their own warband of themed models (along with other races getting theirs which started with Daughters of Khaine and is a fantastic move).

So yeah. Marauders look really basic, plain, primitive design wise and are ripe for an update

Honestly things like that and biovores/lictors/pyrovores/deathleaper in Tyranids make me wonder if GW actually has a formal "we keep at least a tiny handful of old models in every army" as some kind of "updates will come soon to this force keep your eye on them" attitude toward marketing the armies.

Bolt pistol for deserters, laspistol for enemies of the Emperor. Wouldn't want to run out of bolt shells when a deserter needs to be disciplined!

He doesn't need to. He's staring down the rest of the squad while casually executing their least devoted member.

Ha! I had the same takeaway.

I also wish he had an alt build like the Darkoath being able to switch heads. Just pointing the sword would've been cool. Like he's ordering his men forward or challenging someone.

edit : Actually, just saw that his left hand has the powerpack thingy for his power sword, so pointing the sword wouldn't have worked.

Considering the size of that sword, I'm not surprised he doesn't have a scabbard

Wait, you have a problem with the loot group as well?

This is the first time I’ve taken an interest in the event only models. Is there someone who could explain how to get involved with the loot group? Would be much appreciated.

Step one - find Mad Doc Grotsnik making a post somewhere on the forums (eg a few posts up from yours).

Two - follow the link to the loot group in his signature

Three - join the group on Facebook

Four - look for the main/key thread related to these models (most major releases like this get a thread of their own). These act not only as a bit of a hub for focus but there's also stickies on things like a price for the model. The price is the group agreed value for that item that someone offering to get it for you should charge for it. Anything on top is postage or a tip you provide them. This is done so that the group is focused around helping people get things they otherwise can't rather than profiting or scalping items.

Five - read the details and then post on the group in the right place saying that you're seeking the model. Your own thread can work too, but on popular items there's normally a group thread. Also keep an eye on it because sometimes someone will say "I'm going to grab 1,2,3,whatever at the event this week -pm me to reserve one"

After that its a case of finding someone, agreeing with them and sending money (paypal goods and services!) and waiting for your model to arrive.

I’m already a loot group member but I’m not sure the link is working in his signature line atm.

Also I don’t know the technical name, but the “book mark” is upside down in the commissars book. At least I don’t think they’re typically at the bottom of a book. You could paint the pages the other way but then he’d still be holding it from a weird angle

Instead of being a ribbon bookmark bound to the book, it could be a separate ribbon - perhaps part of a seal or inscribed sash or such that is being used as a bookmark. Or more likely is being held alongside the book to increase its importance.

Not just reading from the book, but holding a blessed sash that sways in the wind, inscribed with Holy Words of the Emperor.
