Month is not quite over, but some people are already done with the Feb entries, and might want the weekend to gather their thoughts on the past year. (not me, I need to get a move on and finish up the guys on the paintbench)

This will be the final year where Paradigm is running things. After 8 long years of shouldering the load of running this great project, he’s passing the torch off to me to cary forward. I know I’ve said it before in other places, but again, a huge thanks to Para for all the time and energy you’ve invested in this over the years. Greatly appreciated.

So, how has everyone’s years gone?

I didn't enter anything from December of '21 until July of '22, but if you need proof of these competition's ability to motivate people to complete projects, this past year I tackled an entire box of ork kommandos. Now I paint really slowly (I only have an hour here and there a couple nights a week) so to finish an entire box and have a fully painted new squad to field to show for it is a big win. It also motivated me to try some new techniques like OSL, NMM, and Zenithal highlights.

July "We are Legion" started out the Octarius Ork Kommandos Kill Team set with the first two basic boys.
August "A Helping Hand" was the comms boy.
September "That's Not a Gun..." was the snipa boy.
October Spooky challenge was the slasha boy (the alternate build in the kit)
Spoiler:

December Open Round was the kommando nob to lead the mob
Spoiler:

January "Ascension" was a bog standard nob (took a quick break from the Kommandos set)
Spoiler:

February "Location..." was the alternate build of the kommando breacha boy
Spoiler:

and for March, I've got three more kommandos queued up to finish the squad of 10.

Most of these I either wouldn't have thought of, or wouldn't have had the motivation to just buckle down and do them, without the contests. Above all else though, it's been fun, and that's all the reason Slaanesh needs to keep doing anything, right?

I don't quite recall when I first entered this monthly competition, but I know that I had been aware of it for quite some time before my first entry. A few hobbyists whose P&M blogs I follow would post photos of their entries, and it looked like such a fun and inspirational way to go about the hobby that I just had to join in.

One of the most attractive aspects of the challenge is the sheer variety of themes. I've been doing this for long enough that I don't need to paint anything for any game I am likely to play-- I have enough to field whatever I would want. Approaching a model/models thematically adds some variety and interest to keep me motivated.

This past year was a good one for getting stuff done. I painted up some Mars Attacks! models that have been languishing ever since my KS box arrived:

and a variety of models for Deadzone:

I also dug into the backlog for some larger models:

and even tried building a little diorama:

It's been a blast watching all the veteran entrant push themselves, as well as welcome so many new competitors. I look forward to another year of painting with all of you, and seeing what wild and wonderful stuff you all come up with.

Many thanks to Paradigm for starting this, and to Nevelon for taking over.

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

Painting total as of 4/13/2024: 31 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

So, another year, another dozen entries.

For variety, not the best year. Doing the 3 sisters for October left my undead out of the year. Only the autach kept this from being the Battle of Macragge part 2.
Volume was a bit low as well. 3 months at the 5 cap, and the one month we lifted that, I only did 7. 5 single model months. 38 total minis. Still better than them sitting in the PoS.
Quality was pretty good though. Second time on the podium, again a tie for 3rd with a winged tyranid. I’ll take it. But honestly not my favorite thing I did this year. That honor probably goes to the primaris captain. But I had a lot of fun kitbashing him, and think I did a pretty good job on the paint.
New stuff? The TDA captain got a lot of free hand heraldry. Don’t do much of that; turned out OK. Experimental blotch camo on the lictor. That was interesting to explore.

Mar - Yup, those are Ultras. Push fits from the indominus box, but good sculpts for that. A few places where you can see the compromises to keep them ETB, but I’ve seen a lot worse.

April - OK, this guy was a lot of fun. Especially as the classic mini he’s based off of has been my go-to TDA captain throughout the years. A worthy successor. One of the few Ltd edition models in my collection. Most of the “hard to find” stuff in my collection is rare only because it’s stupidly old (as am I)

May - Hey, look: Nids. Yup, banging out more of the hivefleet.

June - Jumping, stabbing, more of the same. I’ve painted a lot of the little gribblies

July - 2 great tastes that taste great together. I was hoping to get a LOT more of them done this month, but that just didn’t happen. Still, more guys out of the to-do pile and to the YTD shelf.

Aug - I like this mini. Just feels like they nailed the techmarine with the sculpt bringing him across the rubicon. Did a pretty good job painting him.

Sep - Not a Ultra/Nid? Say it isn’t so! So when they refreshed the Eldar at the start of the year I grabbed a few of the new guys excitedly. And they sat as I got distracted. I need to get more paint on them, really happy with the fresh plastics. This guy might not see a lot of play (I’m a jetbike kinda guy) but I like how he turned out. He can look cool leading all the footsloggers. And maybe catch a ride in a Falcon some day.

Oct - No undead. <sad haunting noises> But 3 sisters, like the fates/witches or lore. While just my stock paint scheme, the fun here was the retro-nostalgia of painting the old metal gals. and a new plastic one to round out the trio. Hard to photograph, especially the middle sister. Each one really could have used a full photo spread. One of the problems with ensemble entries.

Nov - So when my local GW opened, the manager thought he could get the plas/fist captain, but was wrong. (Did get my TDA capt, so it’s alright) It’s a combo I’ve wanted to field sice the model allowed it, but I’m not chasing down limited stuff. (And GW character model prices are crazy to start with). The BGV kit, like the Sternguard kit before it, it basically a build-a-captain kit. Spice in some CC toys from the assault intercessors, grab a fancy helm, and job’s a good’n. Of course, by the time I get him painted the rules decision get nerfed a little, but Rule of Cool will still see him get some time in a list.

Dec - I honestly don’t know why this did so well in the polls. It’s my basic nid pattern. Big secret to how I get those nice leathery wings? it’s two coats of guiliman flesh. The same contrast paint I just slather over the rest of the model to get the skin. Just another full strength layer.

Jan - I think all of the Indominus characters I tweaked a little. This guy got the skeleton hand he was lugging around replaced with a censor. One of the big challenges painting him was differentiating the browns/golds. My bone, parchment, and gold schemes all use a thick wash of guilman flesh (I drink the stuff, it’s my new chestnut ink) The only think missing is some skin. But the rest are all up there on the banner. I went back and did more highlighting then I normally to to help separate them. Think it worked.

Feb - While Ultras, at least the phobos guys are in camo, so get to break up the sea of endless blue. But not exacly new. These guys bring me up to an even 2 dozen snow marines. Lictor was a fun experiment with ultra thin paints and intentional pooling. I like the marbled effect it gave the carapace. The model is old, and from a poorly detailed era. There is a limit on how much I can like him, he’s a little clunky. And not just because he’s metal.

Overall not unhappy with the year. I could do better. But there is a lot of crap going on in life, and the paint keeps flowing. One model at a time, towards victory!

I didn't start entering until June - I had entries planned for March, April and May, but life got in the way. And might well again next year, as those months are always our busiest at Oathsworn, unfortunately.

But I managed to actually paint stuff for June! My 'The Underdogs' entry was a group of Grots. Really enjoyed painting these, and they convinced me to buy more Ork minis (still unbuilt and unpainted, of course! )

For 'We Are Legion' I did a unit of Stormcast Eternal Vindictors. I'm (very!) slowly doing an army in the same colour scheme now.

For 'A Helping Hand' I did some 40k regimental advisors, which I'd had sitting in a blister for years. But I had to putty them up a bit, as the castings were very rough. Fun, though!

I did a Crimson Fists Vindicator tank for 'That's not a gun... THIS is a gun!'. I was really pleased with the painting, but not the photos... I had to use loads of light to get in in reasonable focus, but it washed out all the contrast. Oh well.

For the 'Halloween Spooktacular!' I did a couple of models from the Cursed City game, which turned out to be way more enjoyable to paint than I'd been expecting. All that skin... but thankfully, it wasn't as big a chore as I thought it would be.

I really wasn't sure what to do for 'Snazzy'. I went with some Burrows & Badgers pirates, and just did lots of stripes!

For the open round, I took the chance to add a leader to my Stormcast eternals army. really enjoyed this one, although it would have been much easier to paint some of it before building.

I was really pushed for time on 'Ascension' - I'd planned to do a Rogue Trader Dreadnought, but it needed more work than I had time to do. So I rushed off an old Citadel dragon, using mostly glazes and drybrushing. But it looked pretty decent!

Finally, for 'Location, Location, Location', I revisited an old sci-fi project, and did some power armoured guys and robots for fighting in the ruins of Europe in the year 2107. Now I want to do more of them. Lots more!

I’m reasonably happy with what I’ve produced this year and glad to have completed a full year’s entries too!

I may join the March protest this month as having scraped the barrel for my one last legless marine last year I haven’t gone and bought any more for this year. (Nor have I attempted to sculpt any you’ll be glad to hear.) but I do have some old Eldar longing for paint.

A Protoss colony world

Guess I ought to add my two cents (and that's about all it's worth, given how many of the challenges I bowed out of last year...). [clears throat]

March 2022
Theme: Space Marines
My entry: Sergeant Castus of the Blood Ravens
Votes received: 11 (11th place)

I was pretty happy with this model, and I still am. Not as phoned-in as some of my stuff has been over the years, even if it really didn't grab enough attention to get more votes.

April 2022
Theme: Reborn, Remade
My entry: Stormcast Eternals Vindictors
Votes received: 9 (tied for 7th place)

Again, I feel like these were pretty solid. Not as good as my March entry, but still satisfactory.

May 2022
Theme: MAYhem
My entry: Set, Egyptian god of chaos and war
Votes received: N/A (did not finish)
I barely started on this model and just wasn't feeling it. Couldn't really come up with anything else that fit the bill either.

June 2022
Theme: The Underdogs
My entry: None
This theme just caught me flat-footed, with nothing that really fit. I just threw up my hands and didn't bother trying.

July 2022
Theme: We Are Legion
My entry: Easterling Warriors
Votes received: N/A (did not finish)
This was a shameful fail; I let myself get distracted by other things like a dummy and didn't bother to finish even a few of these fairly easy to paint models. To make it worse, the models are still glaring at me from my desk, waiting to be finished.

August 2022
Theme: A Helping Hand
My entry: Lothlorien Wood Elf Banner Bearer
Votes received: 11 (tied for 9th place)

I got to test my freehand skills for this one. I think I still need practice but I'm getting there. This was actually a model that I had acquired before ever starting 40k, so it was nice to get a model painted that had probably been in my collection for 15+ years.

September 2022
Theme: That's not a gun... THIS is a gun!
My entry: Space Wolves Redemptor Dreadnought
Votes received: 10 (tied for 14th place)

As an ETB model, there wasn't much I could do about the boring static pose, but I'm overall happy with the paint job. Definitely one of my better 40k vehicle models. Sadly I don't still have it, as I sold my Space Wolves earlier this year for a new 3D printer.

October 2022
Theme: Halloween Spooktacular
My entry: Dead of Dunharrow
Votes received: 10 (tied for 8th place)

Okay, for this one I definitely phoned it in. Dead of Dunharrow are stupidly braindead easy to paint; just prime white, basecoat with Hexwraith Flame technical/contrast, and then a couple of drybrushes of lighter grays. Low effort, but honestly they'll look decent on the table for what they are.

November 2022
Theme: Snazzy
My entry: None
Again, I just had nothing for the theme, really. At least nothing I really wanted to paint.

December 2022
Theme: Open Round
My entry: Adepta Sororitas Exorcist
Votes received: 15 (tied for 6th place)

I'm really happy with this model; it got lots of compliments on a couple of Facebook groups I shared it with, including my local wargaming group. Frustrating to miss the podium by a mere 3 votes, though!

January 2023
Theme: Ascension
My entry: Master Lazarus of the Dark Angels 5th Company
Votes received: 12 (tied for 8th place)

I had a lot of fun painting this model, and tried out new things on the cloak (including more freehand on the inside of it). It really didn't stand out among the other excellent entries for the month though.

February 2023
Theme: Location, Location, Location
My entry: None
Yet again, I just had nothing for it. I suppose I could have thrown some terrain together or something, but then I'd have to store it somewhere...

So I finished 7 out of 12 challenges for the year. Not great. And I really didn't credibly threaten the podium in any of them (okay, missed one by 3 votes, but who's counting?). I do feel like overall I did better quality work than in previous years; only one of my entries feels "phoned in" at least to me. Maybe next year I can get them all done, and maybe I'll finally do a good enough job on something to make the podium. That's not why I enter though; I do it because it gives me motivation to paint something each month and because I like getting feedback from others about my work. Plus I like gawking at the entries from those of you who are truly skilled! Here's hoping the 2023-2024 season is the best yet from everybody!

Also, before I close this out, I want to give a huge shout out to Paradigm for running this comp for 8 years! It's sad that you're having to step down, but as I said in the other thread I totally understand your reasons for doing so, and I know this thing's in good hands with Nevelon stepping in to take the reins. I know I've pushed myself and improved as a painter over the years that I've been entering this thing (I think my very first entry was back in April 2015, the theme was Veterans and I entered some Deathwing Knights), and I think many others can say the same.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 12 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

In my opinion, that Exorcist is one of the best models you've ever shared on Dakka. You should have been on the podium with that one.

Struggling about in Asmos territory.

All I've done is one so far, and skipped the location challenge because it was too broad for me and I really wanted to finish my Tyranid army (only 5 gargoyles to go!, Just finished and photographed (and will post in a moment in my blog) my entire batch of Sporemines *wipes slimy sweat from brow*.

So all I've got to show for is the Ork scientist with Squigdrone.

I'll say that challenges do drive me to do my best, and have inspired me to do my best outside of challenges aswell where I would otherwise just call it done when I got bored of whatever unit I was working on.

I'm already looking forward for the next challenge, and hope it will be more specific.

Kind regards!
-Leopold Helveine.

I participated for the first time this year (well, starting last year, of course) after finishing a big project that left me with little idea what I actually wanted to do next. So I figured a variety wouldn't go amiss until I find something. I've since come to appreciate the challenge as a means to motivate me to paint things that I wouldn't have otherwise had in my painting queue, which makes the challenge a success in my book.

I picked this anniversary Marine for Marine month. I'm not short on Marine models to paint, but it would have been a waste to let the model sit in a box even longer than the years it had already been. I went with a lighter, neater yellow compared to the last Imperial Fist I painted to play around with Contrast paint some more, trying a different approach. I prefer darker yellow, but seeing the yellow progress wasn't a bad experience.

With Vader I've been trying to get a better grip on my blacks. The model has different blacks for armor, leather and cloth and I was quite happy with how most of it turned out. The reflections on the helmet didn't work out well, though. But altogether it's good step for practicing black.

My first Crisis Protocol model and the most excessively green model I've painted since slapping oil paint on Hero Quest greenskins in the way back when. I don't often paint green, and when I do it's usually olive. As in, green brown rather than pure green. So this was quite the different experience. A lot of things about the model could use work, but I'm very pleased with the blending on the cape. That's easily the best part of the model in my opinion and the layering and blending really worked there.

Layering is pretty big to get the look of my Stormtroopers right. After a test model I did only a couple of months earlier, these troopers turned out really well and are painted beyond a standard that I would have thought myself capable of only a few years ago. I really pushed myself here. These are also the first models that I would have painted close to the time regardless of the challenge, if only after another squad of Stormtroopers.

The Snowtrooper is a direct result of the Stormtroopers' success. I felt like giving these guys a try after figuring out how I wanted to paint white. For the We Are Legion theme one little trooper turned out to be a bit modest, but between real life interference and actually getting a lot of paint on the unfinished troopers of the squad, the month was more productive that the lone Snowtrooper indicates. While I'm happy with the look, I think the different armor configuration and an emphasis on speed over quality gives the model a solid appearance that doesn't reach the previous month's Stormtroopers.

Another entry in the category of models that sat around my desk waiting for a paintjob. More black and white at a time when I was starting to feel like going back to more colorful models, but I finished them nonetheless Not my best, not my worst, but they finally got some paint.

Skurge was kind of a stretch on the theme. I maintain that a dude dual wielding assault rifles is a sound fit, and I wouldn't have been happy to paint the model without adding Des and Troy, but unfortunately slung rifles don't exactly emphasize the dual wielding idea. Regardless, as fun as sculpting the rifles was, painting him was a slog. Crisis Protocol models are big, but the average human still isn't so different from a 32mm or 35mm model. Skurge on the other hand is big. So big that I could not get in the correct frame of mind to adjust my painting to account for his size. So the paintjob turned out worse than it could have. I'm pretty happy with how the base turned out, though.

For the Spooktacular I had some fun with this vampire, going against GW's classic red overload on theirs and taking it in a more muted direction. I think it turned out pretty well. I tried a silky paintjob on the skirt's interior, but the picture doesn't show it very well. The green and white color scheme was inspired by the skeletons in the spoiler below (albeit with more gold, because she's the boss), but compared to that the vampire's color scheme is far neater and more refined, with new techniques that I picked up in the meantime. Overall she's one of my favorite entries of the year.

Spoiler:

I selected Krennic more to fit the theme than any other reason. I had the model, it was never going to be high on my painting list, but it fit the theme and got him out of the way. The uniform is pretty standard but I paid extra attention to the cape, not so much to the layering as to the depth of the shadows. I have particular ideas on how much range between light and dark I want on my different materials, and I think I did a good job getting the recesses and highlights on the cape just right to fit my taste. Still, Krennic is a bit of a last straw, which led next month's entry:

Captain and Mrs. Banning were never going to contribute to the year's black and white overload, but I went out of my way to emphasize the variety of colors on the model. The captain's uniform was set, of course, but I went with red hair for that extra spot of color. His wife started out with purple skin as the only set color and escalated from there. I've had a lot of fun making this model, and I'm very happy with how the paintjob ended up. Definitely my best effort.

The Missionary languished until the theme for the month made me finish converting her to paint that month. She fits neatly into my Sisters army and therefore did not see any exciting new techniques so as not to stand out from my standard color scheme. I don't get to paint darker skin very often, so playing around with that was neat. Short black hair is a pain, though. I definitely need to invest more time in black hair.

My last entry is a bit of a dud. Between struggling to find a good match for the theme, real life interference and a model I don't particularly like (not the model's fault, I don't care for Bethesda Fallout 4 redesign of Feral Ghouls), I made the model more of an experiment to see how throwing on a variety of greens in different stages of drying would turn out. It's a bit sloppy, but I could not motivate myself to spend more time on it than absolutely necessary. Bit of a shame, but on the bright side the model is painted and can join its ugly cousins who, back in the day, I also had a hard time given the same attention and care as I did other Fallout models.

All things considered it's been a good year with seventeen models painted for the challenge, and most of them due to the challenge.

Another year gone, feels a bit crazy how long this challenge has been going thanks to all of you here

Out of those of you who have posted so far here are may fav entries of yours this year

Gulgog TufToof - Camo scheme is good and I like the OSL on the Comms Boy (I think)
Daia T'Nara - The model at the very front, matches all the others but has a lot of detail and interest to it
JoshInJapan - Samurai army for Kings of War, nice colour and detail on small models.
Nevelon - The Lictor V the Eliminators, love the camo you have painted here.
Lovejoy - Your entries have been wonderful to see, Stormcast Eternal Vindictors were my fav, great and unusual colour with lovely details
theCrowe - Goblin Doomdiver, I love that model
ZergSmasher - Adepta Sororitas Exorcist, very nice painting and colour combo
Leopold Helveine - Always good to have a fellow mek join in the Ork scientist with Squigdrone is a very clever idea
Geifer - The Missionary, it tells a cool story and is very well painted

Heres a combined Pic of all my entries this year, some pretty standard ones when I was short of time or inspiration but also some really good ones (IMO). Highlights for me are the Chinork, The Big Gun, Feed the Waaagh Xmas scene, the Ork Angels and the Kill Team display board since I've not done much terrain /scenery before. Year 8 final tally: 6/12. Well, 50% is still a pass, right?

March - Space Marines
This Ultramarine was a long back-burnered project to give a primaris marine a more classic Space Marine look. The painting could have been a bit sharper in places, and the transfers were too old, but overall it turned out okay. I am particularly pleased with the converted bolter, which is made from parts from three or four different guns.

April - Reborn, Remade
I painted GW's update of their classic Noise Marine miniature. It’s my first miniature in the Dakkadakka gallery to garner enough votes to get a rating, scoring a respectable 9.5 for coolness and a pretty fair 6.83 for painting.

May - Mayhem
The Ohmu kit is re-engineered from an older kit to be snap-fit, but it still could have done with more gluing and filling during assembly, and painting all those legs on the sprue was definitely a false economy. The eyes turned out well though. They’re clear parts painted with a shiny silver on the inside and blue ink on the outside.

June - The Underdogs
I tried painting these Empire militia with more natural colours, and they have a nice down-to-earth look to them.

September - Hallowe'en
The Dokoro Zaku is basically a mecha painted to look like it’s wearing a skeleton costume, so it was quite suitable for the Hallowe’en challenge. I wanted to save the head for another project, so had to scratch-build a new one. It looks a bit derpy, but that fits the super-deformed style of the base kit. The main thing is the skeleton paint scheme came out very nicely. I was rather impressed with the quality of coverage I got from the dollar-store white craft paint that I used.

December - Open Round
My last Challenge entry of the year was this repaint of a Warhammer 40,000 chibi figure. While the large parts like the head were easy to paint, the detail on the torso was quite soft and cluttered. I am pleased with the eyes, they suit the character’s slightly fanatical nature.

I initially joined the Dakka Painting Challenge to give me something positive to focus on during the Pandemic, and it's been fun seeing all the many varied and creative entries people create. Many thanks to paradigm for keeping the Challenge going thus far, to Nevelon for taking up the reigns, and to Midget Gems for maintaining the league table. Also thanks to everyone who enters, whatever standard you can paint to.

Also, since Midget Gems provided some feedback, I shall too:
  • Gulgog TufToof - The urban camo is camouflage and spot colour all in one, and works really well. Also the OSL on the ork with the coil-gun is really good.
  • Daia T'Nara - The chaos not-crons are inspired, but your Doomrider has to be my favourite.
  • JoshInJapan - Good work all round. Your lovecraftian horror and colourful lizard-dragon are the highlights for me.
  • Nevelon - Consistent quality in quantity. It was nice to see those old Tyrant models in a modern paint scheme.
  • Lovejoy - Your work is really good, especially those fantastic stormcats and the imperial advisor resculpts.
  • theCrowe - I love your tiny aircraft. Getting detailed (and historically accurate) paint schemes on such small miniatures is impressive.
  • Zergsmasher - Your exorcist deserves the praise it gets, especially getting a solid-looking yellow on such flat surfaces.
  • Leopold Helveine - Your conversion is certainly in the orky spirit. I like the way you did the rocket exhaust effect.
  • Geifer - Black, white and yellow are all difficult to do well, and you have done them well. Still, your self-sculpts are my favourites, especially the colourful scout trooper and his purple friend.
  • Midget Gems - Some good work, that looted cannon is inspired. It's also fun to see your junior versions joining in.

Here I my favorites of the ones posted so far:

Gulgog TufToof - I like the way you painted the camo pattern with all those neat, irregular edges. My favorite model is the Nob. There's something about the khaki cap that goes so well with the camouflage on that model.
Daia T'Nara - It's a really neat collection of models. Not sure I can actually pick a favorite. They look very good as a group.
JoshInJapan - Good stuff all around and painted to a consistently high standard. The Mars Attacks aliens and dragon are tied as my favorites.
Nevelon - The standouts for me are the camouflaged Marines for getting the pattern to look both realistic as camouflage and functional on an aesthetic level, which can be hard to reconcile for infantry camouflage,
Lovejoy - Those Gretchin are great even among the strong entries for all the other months.
theCrowe - At the risk of sounding like I have a camouflage fetish, I most enjoy the look of that German plane from August.
ZergSmasher - I like the Exorcist. It's a great color scheme with a clear main color and good distribution of and support by the secondary colors. Really nicely composed.
Midget Gems - There's no shortage to choose from and the Halloween Gretchin were one of my highlights that month, but I think the big boom gun has the overall best appearance. The color scheme ties the individual parts together very well.
Turaxa - I like the Noise Marine. It has a good amount of different colors for the requisite riot of color look but is restrained enough so that it all still ties together.

Also thanks for the comments, guys.
