Repeat of last year's figures https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/803457.page#11306002

I looked at the top 15 players and only at their top 6 placings (as your top 6 determines your end of season score) so that gives 90 in total. Extra thing that some might not understand, but most of these placings will be at the tournaments that often go 7 rounds, which filters out the factions which can get a lucky run of match ups and win a 5 round tournament. These are the lists that the best 40k players took to tournaments where they knew they would face a very wide array of opponents and have to survive them all and did (sort of as I bet a few of these are the second place players at the biggest events).

Tyranids 20
Tau 13
Necrons 1
GSC 1
Total Xenos 35

Asuryani/Aeldari 13
Harlequins 10
Ynnari 3
Total Elves 26

CSM 8
Chaos 5
Thousand Sons 2
Total Chaos 15

Sisters 7
Custodes 2
Imperial Knights 1
Total Imperial 10

Space Marines 2
Blood Angels 1
Grey Knights 1
Total Marines 4

If I was going to manipulate the data I would have split out Hive Mind from the other Xenos so that Elves were the winningest faction again, how I hate those smug pointy eared devils! They do again manage to have a very winning season despite this. When will GW let them suffer for a whole year like some other super factions...

Speaking of... 4 loyalist Space Marine wins in a whole year, hit that free wargear panic button GW!

The Chaos super faction went from 1 out of 90 last season to 15 out of 90. I'm still salty as I'm pretty sure they aren't 1/6th of the playerbase so this would still be below what is expected for them.

This is before Arks of Omen, correct?

Yes the ITC season runs from February to February, so I think this will cover Nachmund and Nephilim as they were the two packs out during that time.

Next year's data (assuming I do it again) would be Arks of Omen and whatever they call the first 6 months of 10th.

This is more a look back to see what actually dominated the game (as that is what the winningest players take to the biggest events and win with).

I found it interesting to do so thought others might enjoy it.

Some more of my takeaways were Tyranids and Tau were more dominant than I thought and gosh Chaos only had a short time at the top before they got their legs chopped off.

That shouldn't surprise you since those two books were probably the worst during that time. Guard were still limping along with their 8th edition codex and the one Psychic Awakening book, and even Balance Dataslates could only do so much for them. Admech ended up paying for their sins at the time of their book's launch and got heavily nerfed, and didn't get fully un-nerfed until Arks.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Are plain space marines viable at a high competitive level at all?

In my local area outside new players they are almost non-existent but I don't know if that is older players using 2nd or 3rd armies as they become more competitive.

Depends on what you mean by plain, I suppose. High level play really revolves around fast moving combat infantry, so anything with Speed 8 or higher, or that can advance and charge, is pretty solid.

Since upgrades are now free, there's been some lists that try to max that out, so five man tactical squads with lascannons, thunderhammers, and combiplasma.

As far as competitive marine players, they are either Dark Angels or Black Templar. The Dark Angels Deathwing have transhumance all the time. The Black Templar have reroll charges and a vow that gives them some benefit they can choose once they know who they are fighting.

With IH and DA being top marines and BT way behind are the "competetive" players taking BT as an handicap then
