The latest Kickstarter campaign from Battle Systems…

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/battlesystems/maladum-dungeons-of-enveron/description

… similar to their game Core Space, it is a hybrid of board game, RPG and tabletop wargame.

@Grumpy - have you played the Core Space?

Very enticing, my only gripe about core space is how long it takes to set up and take down. Unfortunately I will most likely let this pass me by as Zombicide White Death and the Battletech: Mercenaries kickstarter are coming up in the next couple weeks.

Could you please write what elements of it you liked and why? I am trying to see if that would be the game for me, and therefore also Maladum, as it is based on it.

Just wanted to add, as I said on the Lead Adventure Forum…

I love Core Space by Battle Systems, and the customer service has been excellent from them but I am undecided on this one. The miniatures did look particularly good at Spiel in Essen but Mrs. GG prefers our Dwarven Forge terrain for fantasy. So, we are on the fence and will follow the campaign closely.

I pledged.

Been watching a few of the Maladum video's on YouTube, and the game play really looks good. So many of the features seem so right. Like running out of arrows. Looting a chest and opening it up to discover the items it holds. That got me excited.

Looks like a solid game system.

God, I wish I played more games in-person because their terrain looks so rad. I would definitely use it to run OSE or something at least.

> Could you please write what elements of it you liked and why?

I'm not GG but can tell you about the predominantly solo Core Space: First Born standalone set!

Theme: Instead of the usual generic killfest, you're playing a crew of traders who are sneaking into an alien compound, grabbing what they can get, and fulfilling the mission objective. This often means avoiding direct confrontation with aliens, or at least snuffing them out before it's their turn! You're not entirely defenseless, as the captain's a good shot, and the crew has a not-wookie for close combat!

Alien artifacts: Most "always available" abilities are through your equipment. You start with the terran equipment, but soon grab and search for those cool alien toys. This does mean that you should at least play two scenarios, one for looting, and the other to actually use your better equipment.

Skills: Skills are more like "bursts" of speed, combat ability, or other special abilities. You have a limited number of skill pegs that you can use during the game for cinematic effects (or just increasing movement so you can get the heck away from the bad guys!).

Sandbox: While Core Space has a campaign and additional scenarios from Battle Systems and fans, it's easy to create new scenarios, such as a second game with the same terrain setup, but a different objective and entrance point. It's also not hard to use Battle Systems or other science fiction terrain with the Core Space system.

Terrain: The terrain requires assembly, but it's printed, so gets to the table faster. Battle System's first products were terrain for 28mm, so you can use it for other 28mm games. As a solo player, I've used their Fantasy Set for Rangers of Shadowdeep and the unpublished Lasting Tales. The printed terrain actually looks good with painted conventional 3D terrain.

Spoiler:

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Should also mention that, if you're just interested in terrain, the dungeon terrain pledge (different terrain than the game pledge) has many elements that can be used outside of a dungeon.

* Wilderness: Ruins.
* City: Forge, Wine Celler, Prison walls, cage, and beds.
* Residences: Tables, Chairs, Fireplace.
* Water areas and multi-level buildings: Bridges, Walkways.
* Stone fortification: Grand Entrance, Walls, Stone Walkways.

You obviously won't have roofs or floors for buildings made with the dungeon terrain.

I expect the 2x2 neoprene game mat to be sold separately, and the set selling for $100 retail. So I guess the mat at least offsets shipping?

Spoiler:

As a quick chime in....

I loved the original Core Space. My wife and I played it co-op through the campaign, although mid way through we were fairly OP and didn't struggle too much. I bought the second version, but haven't played it much. Picking square items and rectangle items out of small boxes and putting them on the character pad was fine, then they introduced tiny little half sized squares for consumables. It just got bloody fiddly for us old sausage fingered people.

I'm in for Maladum, even though it's going to have the fiddly tiny pieces of gear as my wife prefers fantasy gaming to sci-fi so it should be a hit.

The only pain is setup time and packing everything away into the box. Also for some of the sci-fi sections and the same with the fantasy village, the pieces are decicated to making a specific building, so these are best kept built (and needing glue in places). This means I now have several large plastic storage boxes full of ready made buildings. Space I could have done without using.

My Painting Blog: http://gimgamgoo.com/
Currently most played: Silent Death, Xenos Rampant, Mars Code Aurora and Battletech.
I tried dabbling with 40k9/10 again and tried AoS3 - disliked both, but I'm enjoying HH2 and trying Battletech Classic and AS out

What I've done is, at least for the FB scenarios where all containers of the same type contain container has the same number of regular and small items, is to just draw them from a bag when the container is searched. Anything returned to the container is put on top (or for competitive, put in the container?). Those consumables can sure help! The ones you buy to regenerate skill points are my favorite. I imagine one of the crew members jabbing his neck with the autosyringe into his carotid artery every five minutes just to get his skill points back so he can use his Go Fasta skill again.

Also: Spit.

I maybe have a solution for that. Cheap tweezers that you can bend to widen the pincher side, to pick up the small chits might work.

Update 21 - "Core Pledges - these will continue to be filled out with stretch goals for the rest of the campaign. We want to give you more than 40% discount off the retail price to reward you for backing the campaign now."

Woot. I might get another combined pledge. So I can fill a 4'x4' play area, and have more players.

The sewers look so good, by the time this ends might have enough stuff for a 4'x6' area.

Update 26 has some examples of BS terrain used in other game systems.

Finally, a pic of the dungeon terrain as ruins, on a 3x3 grass mat:

I decided to do an all in late pledge after all. It was the possibility of Maladum crossing over with Core Space in the future that tipped the balance for me.
