Cozy cockpit of an Imperial Knight

Never thought I'd say this, but new year, new army. The relaunch of the Guard range has really caught my eye and I've decided to more or less go all in with the project, so hopefully I'll be able to finish this one. Having a completed army of Guard that isn't made up of just tanks would be neat hehe. The eventual goal is to have around a brigade worth of models at the ready, but for now 25 power worth of models is the primary goal, so I can play small crusade games against my brother's Orks at some point. Also, I want to have fun with the project and the hobby in general, I've been going through a rather rough spot paired with a massive burnout on a lot of things as of late, so having fun with the hobby again is something I really want to rekindle.

The new kits have a plethora of extra bits and allow for kitbashing to some degree, so that is something I really want to play around with. This may result in what some may view as wasteful conversions hehe, like this model with a flamer, who is made using a spare command squad model, topped off with an artillery crew head, who just makes for a rad model in my opinion.

On the painting front, to start things off properly I've done a test model for the horde of PBI that will be making up the army, using a bit of contrast for the leathers, drybrushing the uniform with Karak stone then giving the entire model a thinned down Agrax wash followed by minor highlights, something I still am quite not good at. As always, seeing a million dots and whatnots that I should touch up on after snapping a pic of the model, but then I remember, I'm still pretty much stuck at the tabletop quality stage, where models are best viewed from a distance, not this far up close.

Still, I may revisit this model in particular at a later point, tidying bits and try my best to give her some extra details, as this model isn't just a test model for my army, but also, maybe, my personal character for an upcoming charity campaign, but we'll see about that when it happens. Head is from the always excellent Statuesque Miniatures by the way.

Next up, the warlord, still unnamed and built using the in my opinion coolest bits from the Castellan kit, minus the head, which is again from Statuesque Miniatures. Yeah, laspistol and power fist is not exactly a game-winning combo on a solo model who can't weather a stiff breeze, but rule of cool first and foremost here, which is also why she has a sword strapped to her side. To make up for her general squishiness she will be getting an Ogryn bodyguard in due time for sure, as we love to have our HQ's square off when we can for dramatic effect hehe, not to mention giving her the relic laspistol when our crusade campaign kicks off, I quite like the idea of my warlord dealing up to three mortal wounds shooting her piddly pistol. Only downside.. my brother plays the one Ork faction who have a save against mortal wounds, heh.

The colours are pretty much the same as the rest of the regular troops are going to be, but a bright red sash for some pop and Runelord brass for the trims and other decorative bits to make her stand out a bit more from everybody else, but not too much.

And here we have the regimental commissar, also name pending, kicking myself in hindsight over not giving him a chainsword, as the relic is quite nifty, but oh well, c'est la vie. Nice and simple model, striking pose, pity that the sword is so long, as I originally wanted to mount him minus decorative base but alas. Cheated on the black by using the amazing Black Legion contrast paint over a zenital spray, which may or may not show through, but what the heck, it's a quick and effective looking result that works for me. Keeping with the rest of the army, I wanted to keep the bling and ornamental stuff to a muted minimum, which was Runelord brass and Iron Hands steel washed with thinned Agrax to mute it even more. Couldn't resist adding a red line along the hem(?) of the coat, just to give him a bit more pop, but hopefully not too distracting.

Next up, gakky photography of some kitbash things I did a while ago hehe, sorry about that.

My first field ordnance battery, a pair of Bombast field guns. I've left the seated gunner off, it looks awfully out of place on these, so instead I took the crew from another set, which will no doubt bite me in the arse in the future. But hey, a great opportunity to create some small dioramas. The first gun about to be fired, still need to find a good lanyard bit, but other than that, I quite like it. The second gun in the process of being reloaded.

And here we have the boring stuff, a checklist of sorts of what I want to build and in what configuration. As mentioned before, I am mainly going with rule of cool first and foremost here, so if any of this stuff looks stupid, suboptimal or the like, you can blame it on me being one of those trash narrative gamer who likes to tell stories hehe. Great examples would be my warlord with her trusty laspistol, or the Praetorian tanks, which according to the internet has an optimal min-maxed build for the best results, but I rather like the idea of running them in my own way hehe!

Cheers! I'm just glad that my brother is into Orks and not power armour or the like hehe, Ork kits are a lot of fun to fiddle around with, another Dakkanaut has already given me some great ideas for whenever I get around to working on our Gorkanaut. Or was it a Morkanaut?

I'm not going to take a picture of every Cadian I've built ha, the PBI all looks the same for the most part anyway, instead I've been trying things out with my lightbox and taken some pics of the more interesting models that will be a part of the army.

To kick things off, a pair of sergeants, both bodies coming from the command squad set. I LOVE the body on the left, the medallion crimson pinned to the armour, the armour itself being a bit beefier by having an extra plate cover the gut, makes for a great sergeant body. Or depending on the regiment, maybe an alternate, less ornate company commander? The other body, standard bearer body again, but this time with the addition of arms and a head from the Cadian upgrade kit. Or maybe the head is from the Imperial Navy kit, not sure, but it was the perfect match for the pose.

Next up, a fun little kitbash who will act as a regular Cadian trooper in normal games, but as a sniper in games of Kill Team, something the Cadian sets appear to be missing, but something that can be easily fixed with a scope and muzzle device from Anvil Industry, making for a neat little designated markswoman conversion. Beret head is from Statuesque Miniatures, no surprises there eh?

These three are still awaiting future additions to the pile of shame: a missile launcher spotter, mortar team sergeant and a tank commander with again, a head from Statuesque Miniatures.

One of my Scout Sentinels, with one of those concrete pylons added to the base, which I think is supposed to be a tiny anti-tank trap, I ran a bit of faux razor wire through it to serve as an old infantry obstacle. Pilot's head is from, you guessed it, Statuesque Miniatures, with goggles around her neck from Victoria Miniatures. The cockpit mesh is photo etch from an old tank kit of dubious quality that I wound up binning, but the etch has been most useful so far at least, serving as an anti-grenade screen of sorts. Not a very good one, I thought about wrapping the entire cockpit in the stuff, but that would just obscure the details.

The new Sentinel is a fun kit to build, comes with all options and a lot of extra stowage and bits to use on other vehicles as well.

How about some heavy weapon teams then? Nothing too exciting here, though I did make full use of the extra bits from the Cadian upgrade pack, freeing up bits for other future weapon teams. A belt of ammo here, a box of ammo there and they better fit in with the weapon narrative in my opinion.

Then there's first missile launcher team, still waiting on my extra 50mm bases to arrive, as well as a second heavy weapons set for two more launchers. Ignore the gap in the launcher hehe, someone got a little impatient with things and decided to undo one of the mortar tubes to make this team instead. 😅 But this is me maximising the gains from the kit, as on the one hand it is a great set that is crammed with all the options needed, but in doing so is sadly not as generous with the parts as the old kit was, where you could get a tripod mounted weapon, a mortar and a missile launcher out of one set. But with a little creativity it is possible to get three tripod mounted weapons and three missile launcher teams out of the kit. Only thing missing is a few spare missiles for the loader to run around with.

Then we have the slightly bigger guns, decided to take proper pictures in my lightbox. Crew is not yet glued in place and I may change one or two things yet in the future, like the firing lanyard, but I quite like where I am with these little dioramas right now. I had to pilfer extra standing crew from another set of these guns sadly, as I am not a fan of the seated gunner in this weapon configuration. It takes a brave soul to sit directly behind a recoiling artillery piece.

Last but not least, for the charity event, maybe, an extra officer, mostly from the command squad set, aside from the head and flash scabbard on his side, which are leftovers from the Castellan set. A fun model with way too many options to chose from, I've used my favourite parts, the sheathed power sword and right arm holding the helmet, for my army second in command. This old bean will mostly be serving as either an objective marker or special character for a rescue mission.

A most excellent Imperial Guard blog- some really great work here!

Lots for me to rip of...I mean, pay homage to from the techniques and tips you show:

* Fully agree that even in the far future, where there is only war, one should have a splash of color somewhere- especially on specialty pieces like an officer, Komisar, medic, etc- to make it pop. The thin piping you added to the regimental Komisar is very subtle, but works extremely well.

* Also agree that for something the size of a 105mm or larger artillery piece the crew should be standing and the gunner prepped to fire the arming charge with a lanyard. It doesn't take a brave Guardsman to sit behind a recoiling medium artillery piece- it takes an idiot. Possibly you can do a kitbash/customization down the road using the seated figures to arrange something like the French 75mm arranged on an autocannon or lascannon piece? A gunner's and assistant gunner's seat might could be fixed to the front armor. That would be too cool for school!

* I strongly applaud using non-OEM heads and bits of kit to produce unique figures that are perfectly customized to the owner's army. Same with using 'cool points' kit- I'm very happy to build for the look and then put a piece of paper or tape under the figure so that everyone at the table knows it may look like an officer with laspistol and powersword, but is actually a chainsword and boltpistol.

I don't generally keep up with what GW is putting out for kits anymore as they are mostly out of my price range, but what you've shown here has me speculating on what I could do with some of those bits. My Guard Army is wildly diverse (hey- the universe is a big place!) but still based on the Empire model.

I look forward to seeing more ideas to borrow from you.

Rock on!

I had wanted to update at an earlier date, but Resident Evil 4 is a bit too good hehe, whoops. 😅 Also, pinched nerve in lower back is quite the bugger to deal with, everything is going at a snail’s pace around here now, did not get as much painting done as I would have liked, but more on that later.

Steal away haha! Honestly, I nick ideas from all over the place myself, or save images of what I come across on social media when it decides to not be an arse, for future reference. I might try something for my Malleus rocket battery, or I may just assemble that third set of pieces as more field guns, but in a towed position for use as terrain / objective markers, which would save up more crew models for other projects. 🤔 I may or may not have bought an inordinate amount of heads from Statuesque Miniatures hehe, if it wasn't for the new Cadians coming with great female heads, I would've placed another big order for sure to make up for that!

To get in the musical mood for the current model I’ve been working on the most as of late, here’s some music from the game Brigador, as the drab colours of the NEP have certainly been a deciding factor in how I want my vehicles to look:

These last few days I’ve been working on a rather boring looking Armoured Sentinel:

Note, a very, very cool model, nice and beefy, fun to build, but only boring because I did not do any serious kitbashing to it, it be devoid of any customisation, so maybe not as exciting as the other stuff I’ve been working on, but a good test to see how much trouble I’d be having painting a vehicle, something I have not done in any serious capacity for quite a few years now. I may experiment with base coating and sealing the next model, so I can more easily apply an Agrax pin wash to the rivets, nooks and crannies without needing an excessive amount of cleaning up afterwards. But quite pleased with the look, a little stripe of red down the front for some extra colour, a badge here, icon there and of course, every good vehicle needs a name: Snake Eyes! A rather unfortunate one as this baby will be packing the platoon plasma cannon, though due to the new kit design, weapons can actually be swapped quite easily, should I make it live up to the name. 😅

The decal is from Doozy! Workshop’s “assorted post-apocalyptic” decals set for 1:24 scale vehicles, which I think I got through either Greenstuff World, or AK Interactive, not sure on that one, but a nice and big sheet of assorted Mad Max themed decals, plus some others, like these dice.

Next up, an officer test model that I may or may not be painting up for a friend, still work in progress, but the model I am using as a test for officer models:

I’ll be leaving the red lining off my own company commander, it looks great, but it is maybe a bit too flashy and distracting. I also find the plasma pistol arm, which is at ease, a bit stiff looking for some reason. But still, all in all, I love what GW did with this model. And yeah, no surprises there, her head is, just like with the next model, from Statuesque Miniatures. 😉

Finally, we have the model, or well, part of the pose that sold me on the new range haha!

Still a work in progress, I want to have fun with this tough as nails veteran, who may serve as an alternate company commander in the future maybe? Okay, on paper giving a power fist to a command squad veteran is a waste, as it hits with two attacks on a 5+ but it is such a cool pose! Again, model uses my favourite body option, an up armoured torso, medallion crimson pinned to her chest and to give her a little something extra, a lamp pack taken from the Death Korps set and affixed to her webbing. To make the model even more grizzled and prepared for a fight, there’s also an axe on her belt, which is from the Imperial Navy set, maybe a little overkill, but I like to think that losing an eye has taught her to not take any chances in melee any more.

Now then, final bit of stuff I can share! On the kitbashing front, something not Cadian related, but still something that, aside from Resident Evil 4, I spent quite some time with:

The Cargo 8, or rather, the Cargo 6 as I went with the six instead of eight-wheel variant, for a somewhat sleeker, faster look? I don’t know, but when I saw it was an option, I knew I had to go with it, which also leaves me with some spare axles and wheels for future projects, wahey! This beast is still very much a work in progress right now, as this baby will be used for future Halloween scenarios as a general insertion point and escape vehicle, depending on the scenario.

Current head canon is that this is acquired in the field and repurposed to deal with the situation at hand. As such, ad-hoc armour plating has been put over the open cabin, which will if I can find the bravery, receive weld beads or whatnot to denote the crudeness of these upgrades, as this was something done in the field, not by a sanctioned cogboy. The vision ports are made from whatever I came across that looked suitably fun enough to look through: on the sides the end of the barrel of a Leman Russ Executioner’s plasma cannon, the driver’s port a spare Leman Russ driver’s hatch and the co-driver’s port is from a Baneblade if not mistaken.

The cargo container on the back has also received a minor overhaul, which has a spare Rhino hatch bolted onto the side for ease of access, plus some extra plates welded on top for carrying more cargo, so to leave the container as free as possible for people to be crammed into it. All the stowage is not yet secured in place, as I am still looking at how to best secure it to the model. “With glue, duh!” is the obvious answer, but I want it to look like the cargo has been lashed down, not magically floating in place. I also want to find the right ratio of cargo and stowage to put on the model, it’s very tempting to dive into the bits boxes and plunder away, but I don’t want to overdo it.

But we shall see, that's enough waffling for now!

Thanks all, the detailing and painting will be something I tackle once my back is no longer actively trying to kill me. 😓 Until then, nothing but sniffing glue and dreaming up ideas in a sweaty fever state. So, let's get on with it!

Nowhere near as big or as involved as the Cargo-6, but still a fun little army addition I was gifted to remedy what was perceived as a “severe lack of tracks” in my current list! 😅

The tried and tested Chimera, in classic configuration packing a multi-laser and heavy bolter, so nothing too exciting there. To make the model a bit more visually interesting I’ve thrown on some stowage from the new Praetorian tank; some kit on the rear hatch, a towing cable on the hull, which nicely fits under the turret without obstructing operation and a spare stowage bin from the new Sentinel kit on the turret. I was tempted to put on more stuff, a lot of upgrades are free after all these days, but that would make the model too visually busy and crowded in my opinion.

So, to make up for this, I went out of my way to bish-bash together something extra to go onto the front of the vehicle:

This is a homage to a conversion I first saw in.. I want to say it is White Dwarf 220, the very first issue I got back in the day. Tears of Isha front and centre, but also a fair few pages dedicated to a custom Imperial Guard studio army with a lot of conversions and whatnot. One of those conversions was using the spare hull plate that comes with the Chimera kit and mount that onto the dozer mount to serve as a bit of extra armour or an ad-hoc place for some extra stowage. In this case, a spare Praetorian tank wheel and stowage, plus yet another bin from the Sentinel kit, who is quickly becoming the new kitbash MVP of the revamped Guard range haha! This stuff won’t be all that visible when mounted in place, but still a little bit of pop when painted up in due time.

The Chimera is a fun little build, not to mention the perfect excuse to get another squad of Cadians and turn them into a dedicated Armoured Fist squad, undecided as to how and why just yet, but again, the perfect excuse to get some more models to have fun with for sure. 😁

Which I wound up doing! 😅 Originally, I was supposed to get just a squad of Cadians, but after some quick math and well, a lot of saved up store credit giving me a sly wink, I decided to just get a combat patrol instead. Aside from twenty-two extra Cadians (two squads and two of the veterans from the command squad) to fill out the ranks with, it also comes with a Sentinel kit and my bits box did rejoice. Also, had to do something special with this one alright!

I originally intended for it to be a third Scout model, but after being reminded of a neat tutorial I saw on YouTube a while ago, I had to try and replicate it. Nowhere near as nice as the original, but still pleased with the final result. So, here we have a pilot having a quick peek from the safety of her armoured walker. The pilot is made using a spare field ordnance battery commander with the legs snipped off and a spare command squad head for a more maverick look. As with Snake Eyes, the weapons and accessories are not glued in place for extra flexibility. I quite like the look of the lascannon, though bulky look of the missile launcher is also growing on me.

Last but not least, well, just imagine I have the box on my desk right now, but the other half of the gifted Chimera was the new Lord Commander Solar model. I was not, still am not, planning to run any named characters in my army for Crusade purposes, but it is very tempting to have the model up for display, or in case of emergency, use him to kick the teef in of my green-skinned opponent; IN CASE OF EMERGENCY DEPLOY LORD COMMANDER HORSEY MAN. Still need to look at what to do with the model in all honesty, maybe leave it as is, as there’s very little to fiddle with outside of a different base and head, which I may or may not replace with a more muted, but still pretty flash helmeted Castellan head.

But we shall see.

Here be boring stuff not worth snapping pics of. My last two squads of Cadians have been reinforced, so I now have six full squads all assembled and ready for basing and priming. Only things missing right now are two more missile launcher teams, three mortar teams and an Ogryn bodyguard, all held back due to some items being on back-order, though I may just ask my retailer to send out the heavy weapons now so I can get cracking with those, I am itching to try and do something interesting with the mortar teams and this small supply of sandbags I have accrued from all these new Cadian kits. Come to think, I should also still have a sprue of 1:48 scale Tamiya sandbags lying around here somewhere. 🤔

Aside from that, what else is planned in the immediate, foreseeable future?

1. A full squad of Cadian Armoured Fist troopers as mentioned earlier to go with the Chimera. As I am typing this reply I am seriously considering getting cheeky with it and just build a squad that is not codex compliant, seeing as this will be squad seven for an army where, come next edition only six troop choices are permitted IIRC. So, breaking the rules and plonking in two plasma guns, maybe a power sword on the sergeant, why not eh?

2. Five or six “Project Halloween” Cadians decked out in gasmasks, special kit, and whatnot for a future event involving the Cargo-6 I’ve been plinking away at in the background. I’ve already dug out my Kill Team Death Korps models to serve as PDF in protective gear, so these guys may just serve as off-world veterans or rejects valued members of the Imperial Inquisition tasked with the completion of a vital mission. I’ve got a pile of Cadian gasmask heads, another accessory set on the way and the burning desire to try and give at least one of them an Imperial Navy shotgun, because we can’t have a Halloween mini fighting off <REDACTED BY ORDER OF ORDO SEPULTURUM> without one now can we?

3. I still have two sets of field ordnance batteries left unassembled. At least one of them will be turned into Malleus missile launchers, the others? Maybe objective markers or terrain clutter, I have already started cannibalizing the crew of one set, so might as well see about building the weapons in some way that makes them useful somehow, maybe as something for the Orks to fight over, bunch of looting gits they are. Or maybe turn them into whatever those field guns the Orks use are called?

Alrighty, have a good week all!

As a fellow guard collector, I must say this is a delicious collection of all things cadian in here!

Also re. The dice transfer.

You sure that's from the doozy post apocalyptic decal set? I've searched it through ak and gsw and a general search and only found one sheet. And that wasn't on it. I only ask as it's exactly what I need for an upcoming conversion

You sent me down a rabbit hole, but here we go:

And derp, I got it through a Dutch hobby site aeons ago, it doesn't appear to be on sale any more these days.

You know what. That's double derp on me, in truth.

I actually found that sheet but failed to find the snake eyes transfer on it. Damn that's well hidden on the bottom left there... And how bloody big are the other decals then!? If that's the snake eyes on a sentinel the others must be pretty mahoosive...

Well thanks and do keep up the good work with the guard. The statuesque heads are lovely on them and have such nice faces and hair sculpture. Your paint jobs do them proper justice too. Much like anvil's female heads, they are suitably feminine looking. The current cadian females are lacking this a bit.
Before it's said, Yeah I know they are soldiers first but, doesn't stop girls being girls... And that's no bad thing...

Not going to lie, a lot of that transfer sheet is horrible filler for me, about the only good stuff is found at the bottom half haha. If I recall correctly, these decals are for 1:24 scale car models first and foremost.

The Statuesque stuff has yet to disappoint, the sculpts are feminine without going into overly exaggerated territories like some sculptors tend to do. The beret heads in particular are top notch and a simple way of making some regular bods look a bit more elite. 👌🏻
