Hi All

I wanted to make a thread to discuss this properly as its just less than 2 1/2 months away. There has been some discussion on this already in previous threads. I'll throw my ideas out here

Currently on 97th challenge in March, June will be the 100th.

 Nevelon wrote:

I was thinking of doing a retro-open round, where everyone can pick their own previously used topic. Bonus points for re-doing a model that you did before, but not required.

I would like to try and make this the biggest ever challenge in terms of entries, I still think we should still keep it to a month but give people as much notice as we can of the theme - to allow prep, building, undercoat. I know I certainly want to push myself to do something really cool for it. I'm happy to help with the admin of the threads, voting etc. We will have to trust that people painting it all in the month, but if someone enters last years golden demon entry might might have to pull them up on it.

Things I think would be useful/helpers needed
- Advertise, do we have anyone willing to post about this in other communities, here on Dakka and also outside the forums. Also any contacts with Dakka Mods and site admins to get the thread boosted or on the front page? The more people spreading the word the better
- Linked to above, posts on social media platforms like Reddit, Instagram, Facebook groups, Discord.
- Make some Posters/flyers, forum banners for the 100th challenge similar to the one in my Post footer
- I will PM every previous Challenge entrant on the Dakka Forums
- Topic I was thinking of was "Celebration" but that also links into Nevs "pick a previous topic" (would have to tell us which one and have a easy list to choose from) I wouldn't go with the extra point for a re-entry of a previous model as that could be seen to go disadvantage new people or ones off entries. Could just make it easy and say "Open" with a recommendation to do that as part of the fun. We can have a vote on it.

Welcome your thoughts and lets get some ideas down. Big and Open to all is my general view.

Hey there,

Sorry if this is not relevant to this but can anybody enter this challenge and if so…how?

Would love to take part in something like this (even if I am a complete noob) … would be fun!

No worries all good, the current one is open here, 100th will be in a few months time. Anyone can enter the challenge It's goal was to get DakkaDakka members to paint up their miniatures for fun and gentle rivalry. The community that has grown around the challenge is supportive and always willing to answer any questions. Inspiration is drawn from each member and a feeling of enthusiasm is nurtured. Everyone is welcome no matter the painting standard or end goal. Its a great way to hit painting targets and keep motivated.

Dakka Painting Challenge Round 97 March 2023: Space Marines
https://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/809108.page

This month, the theme is our traditional Space Marine round. Tall, short, spiky or otherwise, any flavor of post human super soldier would fit the bill. Alive or dead as base decoration. Pretty much any space-based warrior will work, does not have to be a Games Workshop Space Marine (tm). I’d say the sky is the limit, but we are way past that out into the stars.

How To Enter

- You may enter up to 5 MODELS as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.

So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.

These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.

How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of March and will end at midnight EST on March 31st. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

With the exception of the open round and Space Marine, suprisingly few duplicates. Even the Halloween rounds mostly had unique names.

When I was talking about bonus points for revisiting a prior entry, I wasn’t thinking about literal points on the league table. More of an “folks are encouraged, but not required” We’ve been painting together for a few years now, and some of you have improved a lot. Always nice to highlight that.

It would be nice to see some old faces show up again. If people are in touch with old Dakkanaughts who no longer are active, give them a nudge and see if they want to toss their hat back into the ring.

My thoughts on the topic is I wanted something fairly wide open to encourage participation, but not just an “open round” Admittedly, letting people pick from any previously done round is basically just an open round with extra steps. But I do like the fact that it ties back to prior competitions. Which is another goal of our centennial.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I should probably add to the rules for the comp: You may enter at any time in the month, up to the last day. We encourage people to enter early, to show WIP, and engage with other participants, but it is not a requirement.

The goal is to have fun, be motivated, push ourselves as painters, and get stuff out of the Pile of Shame and onto the table (or shelf, whatever)

I like Celebration as a topic, be it actual celebration on the model or a sparkly new version of something done before.

Seems fitting, provides guidance and is still fairly open for those who don't have a chef miniature holding a birthday cake.

Lol, as long as you like Orks there's quite a few to pick from (although I have some some SM, SOB, IG, Tanith, and Orcs/Goblins)

I'd be very appreciative of any help anyone can give however big or small, spreading the word to as many people as possible is the goal

Another thing I'm hoping to do is update the "bonus stats" I did on the HOF as a little interest piece

Just picking whatever theme is way too broad for my liking, I'm 100% with the idea of making the theme -celebration-.

My only issue with “celebration” is as a topic it feels really restrictive. Thinking about the averge mini range, how many models would fit? You sometimes have things with swords upthrust into the air in victory, or roaring after a kill, but how widespread? I’m worried about being going “cool idea, I have nothing to enter, pass."

Which is the main reason I’m advocating a build-your-own open round. I don’t like pure open rounds. I want people to have a theme, stick to it, and be judged on how well they execute it. By letting people pick their own, we can have that, but not be turning anyone away who don’t have something that matches the big topic for the month.

I think an open round would draw the most submissions, as then no special theme is needed. The theme is that it is the 100th month and it means everyone can find something to paint and that will garner the largest number of participants.

My two cents,

Theme's are the point of challenges, I wouldn't enjoy any challenge without a theme.
Celebration can simply be putting a birthday cap on a unit and painting it in flashy colors, people have imagination, let them use it.

Theme is not the point of our challenge. It’s there to guide and inspire, not restrict. And we do have at least one open round a year in December, so the painting challenge is no stranger to them.

Not everyone has the skills or tools to kitbash even a party hat, or the depth of models to paint where they could afford to take one of their minis in a party scheme that would basically make it useless for game play. “Celebration” is fairly narrow from a mini wargame POV. Not everyone is going to have a suitable model on the shelf, and while they can be sourced, how many people are going to want to do that?

In general we try to keep the barriers to entry in the comp as low as possible. Doubly so for the centennial, where we want to get as many people involved as possible.

What if we take "celebration" and tweak it to "victory"?

It's similar but not identical and it's still pretty wide open.
It could even just be as simple as putting a fallen foe or captured item on a model's base.

Thoughts?

Victory is much more aligned with wargame minis. A lot of the ideas kicking around my head that would work towards celebration would also cover victory. After all, what is your average game piece going to be celebrating besides victory?

Hard disagree from me! Themes are inevitably restrictive. This month, for example, I have 28 minis to paint (nearly finished!), ranging from cannons, through giants, dungeoneers, and a mole in a top hat.
None of them fitted 'Space Marine' as a theme in any way, so I've not been able to enter the challenge this month. And as I'd managed the last 9 months consistently, that's a shame.

So, the more open the theme is, the more likely I'll be able to get something painted for it!

You can get a free spacemarine from literally every single warhammer store, they give them out to whoever asks.

My "spacemarine" entry consisted of a huge cadian warmachine repurposed by an Ork.. simply holding up a spacemarine.
But the sky is the limit.

I am a bit suprised that some of you think themes are restrictive.. it is imagination that is the real purpose of a theme.. and that trumps all 'restriction'.
Look at contestants such as tuftoof, he didn't have spacemarines to enter either and just used orks to make spacemarines out of.

Also, to Nevelon; a birthday hat can be folded from a tiny piece of paper if need be, and every unit in bright colors can be stripped and repainted.
I thought these challenge-threads were supposed to be fun, how is it fun if you can just entry anything you want and how is that competitive?
If someone enters a super well done eldar ranger for instance, it cannot possibly compete against a stompa or a Tau stormsurge.
Competition requires specific rules, voiding such rules voids competition and turns it (more likely) into a popularity contest.

Just a thought, but theme isn't all in the single word or phrase that makes up the theme's name. We always get a sentence or two of elaboration what it may encompass. I usually find that more relevant to my choice than the name.

Me, I wouldn't worry if it's Victory or Celebration (if that's what gets chosen) because the omitted concept is bound to show up in the expanded explanation again because they are thematically so similar. I should think that's where you get a better idea of some of the breadth the theme covers through the examples given there.

I guess the question is, do you think one makes for a stronger headline than the other to get people to spend another fifteen seconds and read the next sentence or two that they otherwise wouldn't?

How about "Throwback"?

Maybe take a look at your first miniature ever painted or your first mini entered in the competition... and how you would do with it nowadays.

Or translate your first colour scheme on a completely different mini.

Or just taking it litterally... and enter a BB mini or a grenade chucker...

I have space marines. Hundreds of the buggers. But if you read what I actually wrote, you'll notice that I wasn't complaining that I didn't have a space marine to paint. My problem was that I had 28 miniatures to paint this month, on a deadline, and they were taking up all of my painting time. All of them were fantasy and/or historical. No time for anything sci-fi, of any kind. I could have used minis from this lot to fit any of April's potential themes (Salute, Fluffy!, Bean Counters, Doomsday). But 'Space Marine' was out of reach.
So, yes, the theme was too restrictive for me. On another month, when I had more painting time, I could have squeezed in something spacey. But not this time.

Which is why, when discussing the 100th Challenge, and the desire to get as many people to enter as possible, I'm suggesting that keeping the theme as open as possible will help remove barriers to entry.

But hey, thanks for implying I'm short on imagination. Always appreciated.

I like the idea of choosing from the list of previous themes and being judged on how well our entry fits our chosen theme. There are plenty of themes that came before I first joined in with the challenge, and some that I have taken part in which I wouldn't mind revisiting. If the choice of eighty-odd previous themes is considered too permissive, perhaps we could have a poll to narrow it down to a top ten? (I realise that this would mean more work for the organisers, sorry).

How about making the theme "100?" Entrants could cost out a model/several models to 100 points in whatever system they are for. They could paint up an ancient warrior who has fought for hundreds of years. I have memories of a Chaos Lord in WHFBv2 killing what felt like one hundred enemy troops all by himself. In Japanese, 百々(the character for 100, repeated) just means "lots and lots," so anything that comes in hordes would fit. Masochists could log 100 hours painting a single mini.

That said, I would also be happy with a list of greatest hits from past challenges to choose from.

Now showing more Samurai Marines, Bad Squiddo Amazons, and an Oldhammer Chaos Thug!

Although, if this is the theme, I’m going to have to put in an order with Vic for her Michael Caine miniature:

"But me no buts! Our comrades get hurt. Our friends die. Falkenburg is a knight who swore an oath to serve the church and to defend the weak. He'd be the first to tell you to stop puling and start planning. Because what we are doing-at risk to ourselves-is what we have sworn to do. The West relies on us. It is a risk we take with pride. It is an oath we honour.
