I'm trying to work out whether or not I need to get hold of the Ash Wastes rulebook from the box set.

I have the main rulebook, and the Book Of The Outlands, plus the appropriate "House Of..." books for my gangs.

Am I missing out on anything if I don't buy the Ash Wastes rulebook?

I've been painting and modelling Necromunda models since the reboot, I'd love to get round to actually playing at some point

You could off course play outdoor with the standard rules. That would be fine. Do you intend to use any kinds of vehicles in the future? If yes you need the new rules. Hop over to Yaktribe forum and ask questions there. You will get vastly more responses than here.

Yes, I am going to use vehicles.

I've already got three WIP vehicles on my work table, the opportunity to convert wasteland vehicles is the main reason why I want to explore the Ash Wastes

If I don't get the required answers here I'll pop over to Yaktribe.

If you have the Book of the Outlands, then you have all the vehicle rules. It has actually got more vehicle stuff than the main AW rulebook. That one doesn't have any stats for vehicles, or the rules for roll your own.
The AW book has a more complicated, and IMO worse system for determining weather and ground conditions. It also has the AW campaign, which is inferior to the Cinderak Burning campaign, IMO.
In lieu of the AW book, get the Cinderak Burning book.

F - is the Fire that rains from the skies.
U - for Uranium Bomb!
N - is for No Survivors...

Thanks for the reply, much appreciated. It's good to know that the Ash Waste book isn't required

Regarding the AW rulebook, does it include a unique campaign? I've already got Cinderak Burning.

Yes, the AW book has the Roads campaign, where your gang controls various sections of the road between different places.

The Necromunday guys on Goonhammer did an article comparing the various campaigns a little while ago.

F - is the Fire that rains from the skies.
U - for Uranium Bomb!
N - is for No Survivors...
