As
El Torro mentioned, soup armies were kind of done to death in previous editions (specifically 7th and 8th) because you could just splash in the most optimized option. Especially notorious were 8th edition's loyal 32 (barebones batallion of imperial guard that gave you a bunch of
cp and cheap bodies), usually with an imperial knight or smash captain (melee chapter master) on the side. Souping is less of a thing this edition because adding allies now *costs*
CP instead of giving
CP, and because you lose some of your special rules (like doctrines).
Honestly, I kind of like where allies are at right now. They're there for those who want them in narrative games. They have a trade-off in the form of purity bonuses and
CP. Some factions can be allied in more easily as appropriate (like harlequins hanging out with craftworlders.) Allies are basically a non-competitive option that works reasonably well in narrative-focused games, and that's where I like them.
Did I post in the wrong forum?
Sorta kinda. This section is meant for pitching proposed rules changes, homebrew unit stats, etc. The conventional approach would be for you to propose how you'd like allies to work next edition and go from there. No biggie.
For starters have 3 Sororitas in Paragon Warsuits and a Black Templar Crusader Squad so I've got a ways to go. I originally wanted to keep going with Sisters, but have decided to focus my efforts on BTs. Still I would like to add more sisters down the road so that I can field a BT army with SOB in a supportive role. Naturally we would think (and as I've read) these two factions work together in the lore sometimes.
Sounds cool! Frankly, with all the layers of mechanics sisters have, taking allies might make them less of a headache to run as you end up with fewer overall subsystems.
So what types of mixed armies do people typically go with? I assume this is more of narrative or casual play style.
Among my many flavors of space elf are poisoned tongue (strong ties to harlequins in the fluff) and ynnari (space elf family reunion), so I sometimes mix those together. I also have a growing primaris Alpha Legion (Deathwatch rules) force that I like to run with their trained "cultists" (imperial guard rules), but I haven't really played them this edition.
