10 minutes of TOTK gameplay from Nintendo direct:

I’m pretty excited, I was a big fan of BOTW. I like the look of the fuse weapon ability, hopefully this will help mitigate the frustration of weapons breaking.

No sign of if they’re sticking with shrines and divine beast equivalents, or a return to dungeons (I’m hoping for dungeons), and the physics system for making things like the raft look like they will be a lot of fun.

I’m still hesitant about cars and hovercraft etc and too much technology. I didn’t care for the motorbike in the BOTW dlc.

Overall very much looking forward to this one!

It looks good but I haven't touched a Zelda since Twilight Princess, and still have Skyward Sword in it's shrink wrap from the Wii days.

I had thought about a Switch but MP4 still hasn't shown up, and there is no overlooking the drift issue. If Nintendo announces a "Super Switch" soon, I might reconsider...

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.

Drift issue is pretty easy to fix with a q-tip and rubbing alcohol, though it is unquestionably my biggest issue with the system.

I've bought it using the "two games for $100" promotion and using gift cards bought at Sam's at a discount. I replayed BotW last month in preparation.

It seems the reviews are starting to come in, and I'm relieved, but not surprised, to see they appear to be very positive.

I've only skimmed the summaries of a few because I want to avoid spoilers, but I might have a proper look at some if I'm sure they won't be too spoilerific.

I have remained remarkably spoiler free on this one. Happy to see its reviewing well but its not like there's ever been a truly bad Zelda game (CDI notwithstanding)

My copy arrived this morning. I’ve been watching Legend of Kanto’s twitch streams, and it looked really good.

Whilst I’m still not great at the combat, this game is amazing. Loads of fun, loads of creativity.

Much better handle on combat now. Being able to stick various nasty things on the end of an Arrow is glorious!

It's effectively BotW's underlying game with a substantially more populated world to interact with. A ton of the systems have been tweaked. I haven't felt like I need nearly as much stamina and while weapons break its not nearly as often or obtrusive. The tools feel really good, though cut down quite a bit into a few essentially but broadly applicable options.

Not going to talk specifics for a while to let people discover things for themselves, but the game on the whole just feels really really good. Very much a happy marriage of the BotW formula with the kind of memorable game flow of the rest of the 3D Zelda era.

Yeah I’d agree with that.

I struggled with BOTW, for the things you mentioned. But here (other than the sodding Shrine I’m trying to lick right now) it feels more polished.

I've also tried to avoid spoilers and stuff while playing, but I did see one short video of something totally awesome someone built ingame with the ultrahand ability. Yeah, I look forward to seeing some of the things people will do with it.

And one piece of advice I have to offer: don't forget about the Ascend ability. I keep forgetting I have it and will often spend a few minutes climbing or looking for ways to get up to somewhere.

Indeed! I’ve spent more than a few minutes frustrated in a cave, before remembering “oh yeah, I can just ascend”.

I’m really enjoying how miserly the game environment is with plot reveals. The answers are out there, and there is some hand holding. But a massive part of the game is “eff around and find out”. And it works wonderfully. You’re encouraged to head out and explore, and some form of tangible reward is usually close to hand.

I was actually rather surprised at how forthcoming the game is with the plot. It kind of sets it up as a mystery but the tutorial "lore" quest hands out the answers pretty clearly from the start. I do appreciate that it's a lot more compelling narratively, than BotW was for me.

I like how generous this game is with giving me arrows. In BotW I felt like I had to save every arrow like it was made of gold.

Pretty much all the resource mechanics feel dramatically better balanced this time around. I pretty regularly feel "low on" things but never quite empty. I think the one time I've found myself scrambling was when exploring an incredibly huge cave system that demanded nearly my entire weapon set to be converted into rock hammers to get through.

There are so, so many nice little touches in the game.

For instance, sticking a Ruby on a weapon lets it fling out Fireballs. That’s useful on its own. But, when arseing around in very cold regions? Carrying that as your weapon, sheathed or not, counts as being near a fire, rendering you immune to the cold. Likewise a weapon with a Sapphire attached in Gerudo.

I guess this is what happens when you have a mad idea, and apply it to an already existing and stable game engine and take many years really pushing that daft idea to its limit.

I’ve played and indeed have a preference for Sandbox games. But this? This is a sandbox’s sandbox.

Outside of Shrines, where you can’t pop capsules of Zoia tech? You can cheat and scum your way round challenges, with the only limit being your cunning and imagination wait that’s two limits but you get what I mean.\

Sure the initial hours of play can be awkward as you wrap your head around stuff. And I do constantly forget I can Ascend to get out of areas. But once you’re into the groove? It’s all super easy to do, and even becomes second nature.

Completed the four Temples. Somewhat brute forced one of them - but wont say which for fear of spoilers!

Currently mucking around awakening the Great Fairies and getting my kit souped up.

Also need to think about finding Hetsu soon.

I'm now entering my third region to do my third temple. It's very easy to get sidetracked for hours in this game, chasing after poes, unlocking a new tower, searching a geoglyph, etc.

And I must confess my sins. I...have used the duplication glitch. First, I copied my improved durability Hylian shield so I could fuse it into multiple skateboards and sledboards. And because I was not in the mood to farm materials yesterday, I copied the stuff needed to get my armor to level two.

Completed all the Geoglyphs, and found me the Master Sword.

Also finally found Hestu, so expanded my storage somewhat.

Having a break right now as hit a frustrating bit.

I've got two of the temples done, got the Master Sword and cleared what seems to be the main questline underground. Faeries unlocked with maybe my least favorite armor suped up as well. I have a bunch of stuff I could potentially finish, but I probably just need to wrap up the temples and head towards the endgame. I think I'm technically stronger than I was when I beat BotW.

Just completely wrecked a bunch of Silver Monsters, only to get shot up the hoop by an electric arrow.

Yes I am in a grump!

I'm on my 4th temple. Nice mix of dungeons and so far really impressed with 2:3 of the bosses I've faced.

Ran out of work to do yesterday, so today was mostly logged in, but playing TOTK with occasional checks to see if anything had come up.

Went on a Shrine Hunt, and greatly enjoyed it.

Tomorrow I think I’ll go muck around in The Depths more. Not only is it a good source of Bomb Flowers and Muddle Buds, but I’ve plotted out plenty of over world Shrines, so have a rough idea of where to find the Light Roots.

Plus there’s a bunch of stuff to be found down there!

The main issue I have with the underground is there's lots of dead ends that you can climb and lots you cannot and figuring out the difference is kind of a chore. Light roots are largely the answer but even then some can only be acquired via specific entry points and... yeah. That said, its really cool and if you dedicate the time to uncovering it, very fun and rewarding to explore particularly once you get your head around the way it connects to the mainland (particularly with water).

The big draw, IMO is getting your battery upgraded though.

Battery and Stamina - but worry about your Hearts first, because this game doesn’t have a gentle combat curve!

I’ve genuinely found exploring the up ground a bit, to find Shrines, then going Underground helps.

Especially as a bunch of Shrines on up ground are hard to find, unless you know where they are.

Most importantly I’m loving this as the most open of open world games I’ve had the pleasure of playing. One of the temples I conquered through Sheer Bloody Mindedness, rather than puzzle solving.

Yes there are bits where you need to literally play the game. And entirely fair enough. But a good chunk is open to you breaking intentions and getting clever.

I did a bunch of shrines first along with the glyphs and towers. Hearts definitely matter but you really need that second stamina wheel too for.... reasons... I think maybe one of the first things to prioritize is the fairy fountains though. Even with a bunch of hearts, there's a good chunk of enemies that can one shot you without armor upgrades. Honestly those probably did more to make the game easier than any amount of Shrines.

Confession of My Sins 2: Electric Boogaloo. Today's patch removes the duplication glitches, so I'm madly duping as much stuff as I can. As long as I don't actually close the game, I don't think the update will be forced.

I'm the kind of person that likes to have lots of armor options, and to have as many of them upgraded as possible, but wow does armor upgrading get really expensive in rupees and materials in this game. Hence, the duping. I'll happily kill some big nasty monster the hard way once or twice, but having to farm the bugger multiple times? Or the hard timer on getting materials from the dragons? Nope.
