Sisu is a bloody, brutal action film in the vein of John Wick. It’s worth seeing in the theater for the audience’s kill reactions.

If you are tired of franchise movies, try this.

Essentially, a caravan of Nazis leaving a scorched earth Finland steal the wrong man’s gold. There are a lot of superb kills and action scenes. The protagonist takes more punishment than humanly possible, and dishes out violence that edges on the boundary of Looney Tunes violence with buckets of blood. There are a few scenes that had me scratching my head, but they work to build up the bigger-than-life vengeance this old man wreaks upon some suitably nasty Nazis. It’s pretty satisfying.

I recall seeing a trailer for this and thinking it looked like a good - as you say - John Wick style of action and revenge

I'm confused by 'its like John Wick, but isn't a franchise movie'

It’s similar, same subgenre of action so you know what to expect, but it’s not actually a John Wick movie. It also has some Tarantino style homages, and probably others I’m missing. It’s its own thing, while not being an entirely original new thing you’ve never seen before.

This forum is full of people sick of MCU movie, sick of DCEU movies, sick of Star Wars, sick of Jurassic World, sick of all the reboots and sequels and franchises. This movie is a stand alone movie, with a lot of elements in common with other films while also having its own ideas and setting. When people complain about everything being a Disney movie or reboot, are they not asking for movies like this, that take some risks and find new ways to explore what an action revenge movie could be?

It does look fun. I see the previews all the time while I'm watching some of my youtubers.

Honestly, probably not. Most people (particularly here) complain for the sake of complaining, they'll still watch the stuff.

I just found that comparing it to a very formulaic franchise with the standard superhuman protagonist and Looney Tunes violence meant it wasn't really much of departure. It doesn't sound (from your description) that its really taking risks or a new exploration of the bog standard action revenge movie.

It takes risks in that some of the superhuman damage absorption and Looney Tunes violence go…surprisingly far. If you didn’t like that about John Wick, you would not like this movie.

It’s still quite fun. And I still urge you to see the smaller budgeted movies that do appeal to you in the theater.

Seeing the amount of lethal damage the protagonist shrugs off made me think less of John McLane and more of the Wet Bandits. But bloodier. So much bloodier.

Entertaining. Unrealistic but fun to watch.

Yeah. The under water scene is where I realized I just had to go with it. I’m glad they put it before the noose scene(s) so I didn’t spend the whole time chafing because that’s not how hanging works.
