I’m taking a shot at a high end display board for my guard army and am wanting to try something new to me. I’m wanting to make a display of a Valkyrie model shooting off decoy flares. I plan to use small leds for the flares and thin steel wire for the support but I’m unsure what would work best for the smoke trails left behind the flares. Anyone know some good suggestions for effects like this?

Traditionally, a wire with cotton wool or clump foliage attached and sprayed off-white or grey would be the approach I think.

If you have the equipment or the connections, then there are 3D printed alternatives for that kind of effect. for example, while they don't have anything specifically for flares, this KS campaign has a range of effects that could probably be crowbarred into shape.

Or this one from their earlier campaign

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!
