Hi Dakka,

My son is starting big school in September and is eager to join the school warhammer club. He’s been looking to put together an Orks BadMoonz army list and has already made a pretty good start.

Trouble is I haven’t played since 6th edition and I don’t know what’s legal nowadays, assuming the kids will be up to date playing current roolz.

So here’s the provisional plan as proposed by our aspiring new warboss.

BigMek war boss (this used to let you use a Deffdread as one of your troops choices)
Deffdread X3
Squad of ork Boyz
Storm Boys
Tankhunters

Now my question is, how does force organisation work in the current rules and is the above a doable line-up?
Or what are the rules around stompy-mech armies?

Many thanks

In 10th army building is VERY liberal.

Must have one character. Check.
Maximum of 1 of each epic hero(no 2 ghazkhul). Check.
Maximum 3 enchantments and 1 per hero max. No enchantments on epic heroes. Check.
Maximum of 3 of each datasheet. Battlelines and dedicated transport 6. Check.

So your list is legal. Just make sure not to get more deff dreads and field all at once.

They changed up how army construction work in 10th edition. Troops are now called battleline, but they are not mandatory. Besides that it is max 3 of each datasheet. (Max 5 of each battleline. Max 1 of unique heroes.)

You want some cheap units to hold objectives. (Gretchins or trucks.) You also want something that is anti tank.

After that you just wanna put pressure. Orks are a bully army. If you let the oponennt tell you how the game is going you will loose.

Firstly, welcome to the Waaagh. If you're interested in building something more competitively focused, take a look at the Ork Tactics thread, which I've put a link to in spoilers.

As others have said, you have to take at least one character to be your word. You have this covered in your big Mek, so you don't need to worry about that. From there you can take up to three of everything that isn't Battleline or an Epic Hero. You can take up to six of Battleline units (Ork Boys and beast Snagga Boys) and a max of one of each epic hero (named characters like Ghaz or Snikrot).

Aiming that you've got a big Mek with a kustom force field and you're taking minimum sized units with everything, then you have exactly 800 points worth of models. This is pretty good as either a jumping off point, or as an army to learn the ropes with.

As far as stompy list go, if you really want to you could take loads of Killa kans, Deff Dreads, Gork/Morkanauts, Stompas, etc and fill whatever points you have left with other units. The world is your oyster. You can still take things like Killa Kanz and Deff Dreads and be reasonably competitive as well as they're pretty solid units.

Most importantly, take what you think is cool and have fun.

Thanks all for your help and advice. The Dreadmob is taking shape at an alarming pace.
