How do!
As the year grows long in the tooth, and release windows for shiny new toys this side of the New Year become fewer and narrower, now is the time to wish list what you hope said New Year will bring to Legions Imperialis.
2024 has been pretty good to us, overall. Solar Auxilia and Astartes have a decent selection of units, covering all slots. Mechanicum and Dark Mechanicum I expect to have their separate releases announced any day now. Though I suspect the Mechanicum Tanks might be an early New Year treat that’s just a gut feeling. I may be wrong though, as DM don’t get Automata to play with, so the Tanks are a crucial part of making their force feel somewhere approaching complete.
Into 2025? Here’s my Astartes Centric wish list.
1. Vindicators
2. Whirlwinds/Scorpius
3. Fellblade and its variants
4. Cerberus and Typhon
5. A second infantry set, focussing on the special lil’ guys. Because Heavy Support and Support stands are hard to come by. As are Terminators. Maybe round that out with HQ variants (Chaplains, Librarians etc)
6. Stormbird.

I'm pretty busy with everything I've brought already, I'd be happy enough if next year was just as 'here's a few resin addons and reboxings' as it would give me some catch up time, as we know the old world is going to have some seriously big releases as well. But we know they have some stuff tucked away for next year already and some stuff I'd like to see in those releases:
1. Fellblades- I have plenty of vanguard alternatives but I'd like some 'official' ones as the design is a classic
2. Mechanicum tanks- but for decals. I'm hoping they include decals in the individual sets as it was a bit of a let down there was none in the big box. I have some 40k ones left but I have too many to paint to hunt down more 40k sheets (and even more once we get the individual box releases)
3. Terrain i- City walls set compatible with the edge of the road tiles. I want to build big city/palace walls
4. Terrain ii- Bastion complex set. Perhaps a Solar auxilia base with hanger type terrain building that gives us something to mix up the city/industrial buildings we have right now
5. Orks. I know this won't happen but I'll wishlist this every year till GW do it. The mechanicum have been one of the best release they have every done and if I could have shown 1997 me that we'd have boxes of tiny robots like this I'd had been blown away. I'd love to think that we'd get the same amount of love for Orks one day. The lack of orks in this game is the one thing that stops me going all in for the game and why I'm still playing/buying other games outside of the GW/warhammer bubble. If Orks got plastic kits for a legions 'Xenos' expansion I'd more than likely drop other non-GW games for the remaining of legions lifespan. Not in a fan boy way- but I'd just be so busy painting everything I'd buy from them, that I'd honestly not have time to look/buy from games/models elsewhere.
Bonus. I'd love to see some faction specific (plastic) releases. I doubt we would, but I'd image them to be something like a sprue per legion, each sprue perhaps has some infantry, captains, and a single character-ish model with legion specific details. Then perhaps it also contains one set of conversion parts for a command rhino, faction specific arms for dreads etc. Two sprues per box like infantry boxes but you'd need to buy a new infantry and/or support boxes to use the contents.

I’ll also add “entirely new and unexpected stuff”.
As a Sad Old Git (Soggy Soggy Soggy!), Epic has always been the home of New Stuff Not Suited To 28mm Scale.
Of course, time has moved on and the definition of Not Suited To 28mm has shifted drastically. I mean….Warlord Titans!
But Epic has always offered stuff we never did get in 28mm, maybe because it’s too big and too niche (God Specific Daemon Engines to name but one).
Dark Mechanicum, for now, fill that role, and I’m pleased as punch to see it. And the old adage “Epic can be more experimental, because production costs and design pressures are lessened” still holds true, even if there is motivation to make the design somewhat feasible in 28mm and it’s available materials.

Top of my wishlist: a proper FAQ and an Errata fixing some glaring points wrongdoings at the minimum(Astartes Missile support teams, Kratos discount etc) but hopefully other things too, e.g superheavys get 3W.
More realistically we'll have to do that ourselves.
From a rule perspective hoping for Astartes SHT and Artillery.
And additional formations for Mechanicum providing Imperial Navy air assets ad they totally lack both AA and Air and thus it's hard to build a balanced mono Mech list without Allies.
Campaigns covering Isstvan or the mighty Siege of Terra.
Model wise I already have SHTs, Artillery etc as I have access to print but here's hoping for that in plastic too, and specialist infantry e.g Breachers/Destroyers/Seekers.

Its been a rough year for Legions but the latest book, and yesterday's pdf, have gone a fair way to making amends for the hiccups. I'm actually content for the first time in years! But here's some things that would be welcome...
1) More support formations, especially for Marines and Solar.
2) Daemons and Custodes.
4) Armigers in plastic.
5) Adeptus Titanicus needs reviving!
6) More focus on aircraft, or otherwise a new edition of 30K Aeronautica.

Boom! Leman Russ Commander
|
Solar could really do with the Aurox. Dracosans aren't bad or anything but having a cheap Not-Rhino transport would help open list building to more than just spamming Pioneer Companies to get your grunts up the board.
On the other side of the fence, the Stormlord bussing around loads of infantry could be fun.
Carnodons would be nice but with the non-existent job they've done of internally balancing the new Leman Russ turrets in Tallarn makes me doubt they're going to end up priced well.
The Hermes in another infantry box would be nice to mix things up visually.

1 Yeah they did really open up for thematic combinations with Support Formations.
And soup too but they've already mostly removed the 30% allies restriction in multiple ways and I'm not that worried as the most powerful soup was already there day 1 i.e. mixing Astartes Legions, not e.g. combining Mechanicum, Titans and Solar AA/Pioneers.
Also the Support Formations are less powerful than pure allied Mech with Battlesmith 5++.
They explicitly wrote Solar/Astartes support Formations are coming so hopefully we get the Solar Titan bodyguard and Imperial Navy Air support for Mech.
4 Heck yes.

I can't see any thematic reason for them to make an Imperial Navy Air support formation for Astartes*. You probably have to take them as Allies if you want that.
However they have been part of the Taghmata Army lists in big 30k in the past and seem anchored in lore, so a Mechanicum Support formation with Imperial Navy AA/Air (i.e. from the Solar Army List) would fit nicely and also close the big functional gap in the current Mech/Dark Mech Army List.
* N.B Each support formation says which Army list can take it

Mechanicum do currently lack air support.
Could be a design choice, given they can happily included Titans. Could mean we can hope to see something all new and spangly in future.

Yes, rather surprisingly they lack not only AA/Skyfire weapons, but also have 0 weapons that can hurt vehicles with Tracking or Accurate. No way to re-roll, you basically need to roll a native 6.
And the only weapons that have high enough RoF to roll some 6s are Light AT meaning AP0 vs Aircraft. So super inefficient and non dependable. The least bad choice seems to be Lightning cannon Krios. Averaging one -2 hit for 90pts with good range
Big blocker to running Mono Mechanicum without Allies imo. At least without big blobs ov Krios, which you can't do if you want to play Legio Cybernetica for example. Which is a bit sad, if deliberate.

Always worth keeping in mind that Legions Imperialis doesn’t have the common Codex/Army Book structure, with further units being added in general expansion books.
That the AoD 28mm range also currently lacks Mechanicum flyers also isn’t necessarily a sign that “no flyers and little AA defence” is a specific design choice.
Certainly whilst I could live with that being the case (not every army needs to be able to do everything), I wouldn’t be at all surprised if we see brand new Mechanicum flyers in future.
How far away? No idea.

@Mad Doc: sure, agree. Mech are strong in other areas. E.g. being more durable vs the AP-1 one shot lascannon "meta" due to 2W 4+&5++ (w Battlesmith) than regular 1W 3+ /2+ tanks for example, for similar points. Actually light AT is better vs Automata than AT. So all those players building all lascannon Solar/Astartes tanks get something to think about. Which is good. Good native mobility and mobile Shooting too and strong shooty and/or Fearless infantry.
Oh man, some Steampunk anachronistic Mechanicum flyers with cogs, open panels and zero aerodynamic components would be ace. Let's hope.

Can only really echo some of thing wish listed already.
A Terminator box would be cool. Basically the same as the current infantry box, but with various Terminator options, regular tactical terminators, close quarter terminators, command terminators, librarians etc.
Whirlwinds, Vindicators, Cerberus etc.
The Astarters Super heavies would be nice too.

Mechanicum certainly benefit from a solid amount of Light AT. So whilst the lack of dedicated AA could be a problem? You at least don’t hurt for stuff which is only a bunch of sixes away from swatting flyers out the sky.
Downside of course would be potentially limited Order options, which can make Mechanicum very predictable.

While you _can_ take out Flyers with a few or even a single light AT shot(s), that doesn't mean it's a reliable or dependable way. Looking st the mats, you'd need 18 light AT shots hitting on native 6s to take out a single wound 3+ Flyer. Only 6+ bases of Thallax and Castellax has that amount, but a lousy 8" range. So you'll get picked off from 22" long before that. A 1W 4+ Flyer needs 12 shots on average, so also a maxed out Arlatax detachment could do it.
Looking at a 2W 2+ Thunderhawk, you'd need 72(!) light AT shots on average. Which nothing comes close to.
Either way a Krios Detachment does it cheaper and at longer range than any light AT in all cases.
I think we should have had this discussion in the Mechanicum thread.
Back to 2025 wishlisting folks!

Here's a list to "complete" the generic Legion units: - Armour Marks - II through V (Could possibly include variant weapon loadouts, terminators and dreadnought weapons as well as specialist units like Destroyers, etc) - Whirlwind Scorpius (+generic Whirlwind/Hyperios) - Vindicator (Both version) - Arquitors - Charabdys and Dreadclaw - Superheavies (Fellblade, Glave, Falchion, Typhon, Cerberus, Mastodon) - Stormbird - Graviton and Quad Heavy Bolter Rapiers - Land Raider Carrier/Achilles - Sicaran Venator Estoric options, unlikely to appear - Caestus Assault Ram - Thunderhawk Transporter - Castraferrum Dreadnoughts - Spatha Bikes and Estoc Jetbikes - Legion Basilisk/Medusa There's also various weapon options like Predator turrets, Deredeo weapons, etc. I wonder if we'll see a weapon upgrade sprue to fill in missing vehicle weapon options?

I'm just starting this game, and as such, I dont really know what to expect, but I have few things on my wishlist;
- more formations to field even more infantry
- psychic units
- sniper units
- new factions (daemons, custodes, other militia)
- space marines (whirlwinds, vindicators, superheavies, primarchs, other characters such as chaplain, librarian, techmarine)
- solar auxilia (cavalry unit and its command section, colonel or other 'high command ' unit, salamander light tanks, thunderer and destroyer, penal legion, more artillery and superheavies, utility tanks such as atlas, trojan and centaur)
- mechanicum (artillery and superheavies, aircraft, more variety in basic infantry)
- titans (imperator titan)
- knights (maybe a dominus variant)

This is an interesting idea. I suspect that maybe later on towards Siege of Terra (unless they do a Signus Prime book) we'll see some sort of 'Daemons of the Ruinstorm' £35-ish plastic boxset - with a selection of different little nasties for the four powers. They could also make this include some mutant/possessed marines too.
Not quite sure how they are going to handle greater daemons or Primarchs though, in the past a blister pack would be an obvious choice but we haven't seen any blister releases for Legions yet (although their is a precedent with the other specialist games, especially if they are direct-only).

My thoughts are that they will exhaust the earlier heresy era with campaign books and then do a big siege of Terra book to finish the game off before relaunching a 2nd edition perhaps focusing on the war of the beast.

I feel that this bit of background / excuse is changing whenever the authors see fit, or whenever the studio needs some product placements.

Me too.
Might expand from M31 onto M41 gradually after the complete Heresy factions and campaigns are out.
If/when they release Orks for example they could also expand into the earlier Great Crusade setting with just a book expansion, basically using the same Orks for GC and Epic40k. Definitely not happening 2025 though.

I'm not sure we will ever get a move towards 40k as a setting for this game. Not only the name of the game itself does not lend it, but there are only so many product SKUs to go around, and some of the Adeptus Titanicus guys are still waiting for Ork/Eldar titans..
I don't think GW themselves see Legions as anything more than a niche product (within a Heresy niche). Otherwise they would make an attempt at rules that are easily palatable, make their rulebook more approachable and actually advertise their product beyond footnotes.
NetEpic (if you want something similar to Legions) and Armageddon are already awesome games in their own right, fully play tested and community supported - Armageddon had a tournament in the UK just last weekend. So I am not sure what GW could do there beyond what the community has already done - just my thoughts for people waiting cap in hand (that's the family-friendly version ) for something that is almost certain to never arrive.
