Hi everybody
beeing just a lurker in this forum I get then the motivation to share my job with you. I did my intro years ago when I join the forum.
So as per subject I start a rogue trader era Crimson fist army. Crimson fist because the cover picture on 40k rogue trader book.

I'm not a space marine painter, mainly orks and imperial guards, so I need to practice deeply in how paint smooth space marine surface.

First attempt a devastator squad
I buy recently a bunch of RT plastic spacemarine and mixed with same I had in the bit box.
Lascannon and h.bolter came from imperial guard bits. Melta gun from Victoria Miniatures
Hope to be compliant with forum rules.
Filippo

Ps still have to familiarise in how to post pictures

Wow, love these old minis. Can't wait for the highlights. Are you going to base them 1990's style?

Hi Styrofoam04 and Easy E
Thank you for replying.
@ Styrofoam04
I did same highlights attempts without be fully satisfied with the results, i need to go deep on this and find the my proper way to.
About the base, my plan is to painting the bases in Goblin green or the equivalent actual colour and glue green grass on it, my way of 90's basing.
@ Easy E thank you Rbt01 marines are lovely, this army will be based on these plastic minis, even collected same lead characters and a 80's Dreadnought.
Will keep you updated

Neat! Multipart beakies hold up better after these years than statue monopose 2nd edition Marines do. Nice start and best of luck.

Thank you all for replying.
Your comments are very motivating.
This is my test unit so on the left the minis washed and highlighted and on the right different approach, using a dark base colour (regal blue) then highlightedwith ultramarine blue.
.need to finish the bases.
wait for your comments.

I hate doing those studded shoulders. Due to the limitations of plastic molding, some of them have real bad definition. Getting them to look clean is a real bear.

Nice work on them!

Did you freehand the sergeants marking on the leg as well? I love the old RT era art where the squad/ chapter markings seem a lot more random.

Hi Nevelon and bantha_beast thank you for replying
you're both right, doing the shoulder logo in freehand on this minis is very hard and time consuming (and even enjoyable) but , this is why i just make the chapter symbol only on to the sergeant. My original plan was to freehand the chapter logo in all the squad, but i realized i cannot manage to do a neat and similar logo on all the five shoulder, so i moved on doing the devastator symbol , easier to realize, but if you check there is no one similar to the others. i will give a try to chapter stickers, do you have any suggestions on wich sticker i can buy?
Bantah_beast, yes the sergeant patch is in freehand too.

These guys where my fist 40K purchases back in the 80's.
I only have one left now, but I may still have one of those old dreadnoughts.
Nicely painted. I like the freehand work on the shoulder pads.

Add more details to the character and try to do the same on plastic Space Marine. Focusing on the armour highlights.

Hi Nevelon

Not yet, maybe on sergeant helmet, thank you for your comment, helped me to go deep on space marine markings.
Found online the following picture, it may work for rogue trader era SM I guess.

That pic is from the pamphlet that came with the RT era SM paint set. Some fun stuff in there.

Helmet stripes are easier then those. You can either stop at the helmet, or go all the way down the nose. I know I just stopped. Solid stripe is for battle-brothers, parallel lines flanking it in a secondary color for sages, cross hatched for vets. Both for vet sarges.

example from my collection (old pic)

So I get ispired from making markings and I enjoy a lot testing same.
Doing the rank marking on lieutenent, sergeant and a heavy bolter veteran.
I realized to jump a step on the three tactical marines starting from the left.
I mean I do not highlights using ultramerine blue but only regal blue ( the base color). As a result the above look al little more gray than blue in comparison with the marine on the right.
But it's fine for me to have different shade on the same squad.
Greetings
Filippo

Hi everybody
Keep detailing I freehand the tactical squad.
Add bolter and heavy bolter badges on marines legs, just to break the blue dominant.
I'm waiting for CF decals to put on right shoulder.
Even battle standard is on freehand. For this I take inspiration to the standard on rogue trader manual's cover

Looking good. It almost seems wrong to cover up the goblin green bases with grass.

Hi Tommygun1918
Thank you for your comments
you mean they look better without grass.?
The plan was to replicate the flat green gaming board typical of rogue trader or 40k 2nd edition era.
To be honest I'm not use to base the minis so this is my first attempt after years.
Comments sand criticism are welcome.

Your basing looks good, but I was just thinking the old way of doing those was to cover them with sand and paint the whole base and sand goblin green and then maybe highlight the sand a little bit.
But there is nothing wrong with the grass, it was just a thought.

You're right, that was the way they did base, but i don't like the result, i mean, i dont like my result with that way.

Love the Lt. Commander. He has a special place in my heart as being the ranking officer for my Ultras for a long stretch on time, and my avatar on Dakka for a while. Well done bringing him to life.

Even back in the days when goblin green bases were in vogue, I never did the sand and paint version of them. I painted the whole base with goblin green, but flocked the top. Some of my undead are still rocking that look. These days I still GG the tops under the flock, but use black rims. And rocks, tufts of grass, and flowers.
