I recently called my local Games Workshop Warhammer store to ask about their rules regarding conversions and proxies for Warhammer 40k. They mentioned that proxies are not allowed, and that all models must be painted with at least three colors and based. Additionally, they stated that for conversions, the models must be made up of at least 90% GW plastic.

I wanted to reach out to see if anyone else has encountered similar rules at their local stores. Specifically, I’m curious about the 10% allowance for non-GW materials.

For example, would a simple head swap or shoulder pad from a different brand count as crossing that threshold, or can I use my own bases?

Thanks for your insights!

"It depends on the managers"

Things like "10%" are highly interpretable. Some will be fine with a headswap some won't; some won't notice unless you tell them etc...

Some stores are going to be more lax; some stricter and often the quality of the conversion plays a part too - really bad ones are more likely to get blocked than good ones.

Basically a GW store wants GW models on the table because when you play you're "advertising" the game to any who walk in and advertising the army to your opponent. So GW wants them buying their stuff now going to 3rd parties.

That's funny - a GW store refusing GW made resins on the tabletop

Some managers 'banned' FW from their stores as its' not on their shelves. Seems to be happening less often now you can get FW from the GW web store, but it does happen.

95% of the stuff sold is going to be GW plastics and it wasn't that long ago that FW was a separate sub-firm and many didn't really twig it was "part of GW".
Also some managers will steer customers away from it in the past as orders from the FW site didn't count toward the stores sales metrics.

So when a customer asks in general the staffer could easily just say "GW plastic" to keep things simple. Most who go after FW stuff are going to be on the more experienced end of the customer spectrum in general. Ergo they've been around; already know the answer the manager will give and that FW is most likely 100% allowed (esp today where its sold alongside everything else on the GW store)

Do you think I could get away with this? Once I paint them up?

I don't think they would notice unless you point it out.

I'm not planning on it.

I've had to cut down on the 3rd party stuff I want to use, due to their rules.

I've also heard one manager clarify it as "Citadel Miniatures" instead of the "GW Plastic" and then a few people started naming possible problems including Citadel produced Ral Partha, Marauder and Iron Claw. Also any ex-Citadel stuff from Wargames Foundry. Can anyone think of any more exceptions to this?

At my GW, proxies are 100% fine.
I’ve used Morghast Archai with some weapon swaps as Daemon Princes for well over a decade now. (I like the skeletal look, sue me )

That manager sounds either new or bad.

Edit: no painting requirements at my store either. Painting is encouraged, but you can play with any level of painted mini, from grey plastic to Golden Daemon.
