I am being drug against my will into playing Combat Patrol and/or Kill Team due to a Faustian bargain I made to lure someone into playing Horus Heresy with me.

I am looking for a Chapter that is not well recieved (the Marines Malevolent and their angry wasp color scheme are the only ones that come to mind).

This will never be a large force, Just some fun Marines that no one will ever say, "Oh good! The ----- are here!"

Also, if I can find their Chapter icon available to buy (because my paint skills are less-than-awesome) that would be great!

Thank you

Nova Legion. Because you get to tell people no, not Nova Marines, Nova Legion. And they're called Legion. And their colors and symbols are unknown so you can do something similar there too. Like the opposite quarters of Nova Marines and a normal UM chapter badge.

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Do Salamanders - but in their awful yellow with black stripes pattern (look it up). You certainly wouldn't want more than a KT or CPs worth of this paint job.
Or the Rainbow Warriors.
You never see either of these on tables.

Or just make up a name & color scheme.
Your new opponent won't know if it's official & you've got about a 50/50 chance of it actually being so. Especially if your pick involves Crimson/Dark/Angel/Space/or virtually an color.

I just realized that I have almost never seen Blood Ravens on table :/ It is just coincidence or they are really unpopular?

That's what my marines (from 9th and 10th starter sets) are being painted! Because I don't care about SMs that much and DoW helped get me into 40k! They also look just fine using contrast paint + wash + trim + cream shoulder = done!

I think DoW is great inspiration for Blood Ravens. That's one of few games where we didn't get blue guys again yet.
Also, wasn't Blood Ravens first SM legion GW has on box in 1ed? I think they have different name, Crimson Fists or something

The Blood Ravens were created for Dawn of War.

If you're only ever going to have a small force, perhaps chapters like the Celestial Lions or the Mantis Warriors would be good options? Chapters that are canonically incredibly low on standing forces.

Plus if you picked the Mantis Warriors you'd be ready if someone ever roped you into a Badab Campaign.

If you don't mind silly/fun, the angry marines.

If you're being serious, maybe one of the chapters from the Badab War, https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Badab_War

Sons of Malice.

Though you may want to base your choice on ease of colour scheme - no whites, no yellows, no checkerboards, etc.

The previously mentioned Minotaurs for example are quite straightforward to paint in base metalics and then throw an ink over of your choice for table ready results.

Or anything that you can throw a heavy contrast paint over and then highlight.

While falling through the rabbit hole that BorderCountess opened for me, I found the smallest Space Marine Chapter: The Astral Knights.

Remember the Necron World Engine? These are the guys who sacrificed their Chapter to help kill it.

Thade (Dreadnought) - Brother Thade was a Dreadnought and the last Chapter Master of the all-but decimated Astral Knights Chapter. Following the death of the majority of his Chapter, who died heroically in the destruction of the Necron World Engine, Thade had been left behind at the Chapter's fortress-monastery as acting commander of the Chapter's thirty remaining battle-brothers and neophytes. To the honoured Ancient fell the onerous duty of surrendering his Chapter's fortress-monastery to the newly-founded Sable Swords Chapter, who had sent representatives to claim all of the Chapter's possessions on Obsidia. The ultimate fate of Brother Thade and his fellow Astartes is unknown, but Sable Swords Captain Daegan advised his fellow Astartes to embark upon an Imperial Crusade in order to spend the remainder of their lives fighting the enemies of the Imperium.

So they are a pre-primaris Chapter of 1 Ship, 1 Chapter Master Dreadnought, and 30 Marines and neophytes. I think this might be the fastest way to build a complete Chapter ever.

Any thoughts on these guys?

Lol at "fastest chapter to build".

I'd just warn you that white can be a pain to paint.

Or is that meant to be silver? Because silver is easy to paint!

But also, maybe I missed it, but why not just make your own chapter? It's what I'd recommend always and forever. Pick your scheme, pick your heraldry, pick your rules and make your own story!

I'm not lazy... that's their color scheme!

Buy more models?... Sorry, they only have 31 models in their whole chapter!

I bet I could still snag those newer sized "not Primaris" Space Marines... Now what kind of Dreadnought should the Chapter Master be.

Its actually a really cool colour scheme, certainly way better than their terrible and boring modern one. Annoying to paint though, I'm sure.

Here's someone's take on it on the current HH beakies:

I think that's beyond my skill level.

But it would be fun to be "That Guy," and tell people, No. They're painted as Salamanders are supposed to be."

On second thought, I don't want to be That Guy ever again.

It's not how they're "supposed to be". It's merely an official variant - used during the Badaab war iirc. It's in the Rogue Trader book, so the patterns as old as the game.

Oh, OK. That's still a tough scheme to paint.

Oh, and I would like to find an official Chapter to have fun with... thanks for the advice so far.
