How do people feel about doing another summer challenge? Last year we did “centerpiece”. Is there enough interest in having another run this summer? Same timescale as last, so Memorial Day to Labor Day. Aka end of May to early September. 3 months and change.

How many people would be interested
What topic would you like?

We could just leave it vague, and let people do whatever, or try to focus it down a little.

Thoughts?

We could. We could also do things like lift the 5 model limit if people want to do things like a spearhead summer or combat patrol

In the idea phase now, looking for feedback

I like your Spearhead/Combat Patrol idea... seeing as that might be more my level... and an incentive to paint.

I’d worry that the CP/Spearhead might be a bit restricting. Also, might be a bit much for some people to do, even over a summer.

I like the concept though.

There is also the concept of starting these from a blank slate. I’m not a GW sales rep trying to get people to buy a shiny new bundle box and paint it over 3 months. Most people probably have armies in progress.

We could do a post your start point, post your goal, and help encourage each other to get there. Weather it’s a CP, or rounding out a 2,000 point list.

The goal here, like the normal monthly comp, is to encourage and support each other to get stuff done. Just stuff you can’t fit into one month.

What do we want to support? What do we want to change? How many people would be interested?

I'm tentatively interested, and I like the spearhead/combat patrol idea. For other games we could just say paint a small force. Encourage folks to make progress on an army

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/7/24, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~16000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Imperial Knights: ~2300 | Leagues of Votann: ~1300 | Tyranids: ~3400 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000 | Kruleboyz: ~3500 | Lumineth Realm-Lords: ~700

I laid out all the stuff I own for painting and modeling:

The competition here is always open for all skill levels. While it may be daunting to throw your hat into the same arena has some of the experts we have here, the hope if to be inspired, not intimidated. And everyone is generally willing to answer questions and help.

Hm, I wonder if “getting started” would be a good theme. Good place to bounce ideas around with a new project. Downside is that not everyone has something to fit. The problem of trying to find a topic that’s broad enough to inspire, but not restrict/exclude people.

I think making it a Combat Patrol or Spearhead type force would be good.

You don't need to do the exact box contents of a starter box, but something that's in that vein at least.

I like the idea of relaxing the 5-model limit. I was digging through the backlog to find my entry for May, and I realized I have a lot of models I got from Kickstarters that haven't seen the light of day since they arrived, and I would like an excuse to break them out.

Just Starting Out would also work for more experienced painters looking to try a new technique, like sculpting, airbrushing, or OSL.

Now showing various models from the previously abandoned projects!

Painting total as of 12/31/2024: 107 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain and two walkers and a quad mech and five giants

Summer starter strikeforce?

Paint ~500 points of an army, enough for an intro level game. Not required to be 40k/AoS, but take inspiration from spearhead/CP to set your force. Can be part of a larger army, but the portion planned for the summer must start with at most a primer coat/ single color.

For non-GW games, this can be equivalent to painting the minis in the starter set, something like that. I know every game is different, but something like 1 HQ and 2-3 units.

I'm interested in making a terrain set for this multi-month challenge. I have an idea for a huge spaceship interior that I'd like to make a reality. I'm not sure what that implies with regard to the challenge's theme.

I'm in if a single big/fancy thing will count - I've had an Armiger sitting around on sprue for a while, and I'd like to put it together as a War Dog with a bunch of conversions like last year's Keeper of Secrets, which'd make it a similar three-month job at a guess.

We are still in the tossing ideas around stage. I can put a poll up at some point if people want, once we get some options on the table.

You could make it to paint something either new or unrelated to your current army... a true side quest.

I have an imperial knight to loot and rebuild in Gork's image. I can't really think of a theme that captures that though.

I have just enough 'character' and 'squad' minis to do a small force (emphasis on the small). For a "single big/fancy thing" I could paint up one of the larger mecha kits that I have.

I like the idea of a side quest or just 'An Adventure'. That sounds to me like it could be a new beginning, a diversion, somewhere new to go, a band to go exploring, or something foul that you encounter on a quest. There's plenty of scope to interpret it and can be as big as you want if you drop the 5 model limit.

I added a poll with some ideas. You can vote for multiple ones if you want. Will run for 3 days.
It sounds like there is enough interest to run it, so let's get a topic and see what we feel like doing.

Start will be in 2 weeks on the 26th.

I put in a vote for 'big stuff' and 'fancy' as well since it's too humid to spray prime anything just now so I've started building the War Dog anyway, but I feel like 'open' is the way to go. It'll be more fun with more people, and anything worth considering a three-month project is a lot of effort - the fewer barriers to entry, the better.

As long as we lift the 5 model barrier. I've got something kind of specific in mind for the summer side quest...

We’re playing fast and loose on this one.

So we’ll go with an open round, let people do what they want. And also remove the model cap. Quantity or quality, choose your poison. Or both if you are crazy.

Other normal rules will apply. Models must start either bare plastic or basecoated (zeinethal pre-shades are OK) post a proof picture. Time will run from memorial to labor day. Probably relax the picture limits as well so everyone can show off the goods.

Work together and help others in the challenge thread, post your goals and dreams, the normal stuff.

A fully open competition sounds good

I have some ideas of what I want to do already, probably a Warhammer Quest of some sort. But I need to check a few things before I commit.

Open sounds good indeed. I can enter the still not fully assembled froghemoth from last year and continue to not finish it.

Mega Open Round works for me. I have a project that I couldn't finish in a month, but could do as a summer side quest. And also, being able to work on it a little at a time over that time means I won't get burned out like my more recent attempts at the painting competitions.
