Warner Bros. Discovery Is for Sale After All, as “Multiple Parties” Circle - The Hollywood Reporter

Amid swirling reports of bidding interest by Paramount Global, the WBD board of directors says is it “has initiated a review of strategic alternatives to maximize shareholder value.” That’s the first acknowledgement of a (metaphorical) “For Sale” sign hanging from the iconic WB water tower.

In a press release on Tuesday morning, the Warner Bros. Discovery board of directors said it has received “unsolicited interest” from “multiple parties.” And it’s listening.

Can't wrap my head around Netflix buying Warner Brothers. Thought it was supposed to replace Warner Brothers.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Maybe the new company will give it back to Zack Snyder.

That would be amazing! Then we could get the Jared Leto Batman. He's not the actor Zack Snyder wants- he's the actor he deserves.

Was thinking about where DC Comics would land in all this.

My understanding is the business unit that does comics is different from WB Animation Studios. And the comics unit is not profitable (could be wrong.) They have lowered page rates dramatically and get product from outside the US to keep from taking a loss (some artists are paid as little as $15 a page - pencils and inking.)

The IP has value as an asset, but it would be hard to get what it's worth. If they folded the comics division, they would likely license properties out to independent comic companies. My understanding is there's reasons they have to keep publishing comics having to do with copyright. For some of their characters, they lose the rights unless it appears in print every so often. Licensing fulfills this obligation.

Not sure there's still a mass market for comic companies. Let's say Paramount buys WB. They have multiple publishing divisions - entertainment, education, digital, etc - DC could be folded into one of those. With another buyer, like Netflix, possible they just stop publishing altogether and go the licensing route.

DC Studios and DC are indeed in different business segments. It's also worth noting that Warner Bros. Discovery also owns Cartoon Network and its various divisions (such as Cartoon Network Studios)

It’s Official: Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros. in Deal Valued at $82.7 Billion - The Hollywood Reporter

Netflix, run by co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, has agreed to buy Warner Bros. in a megadeal valued at $82.7 billion. Under an effort nicknamed “Project Noble,” the streaming giant’s leadership secured $59 billion in financing from a consortium of banks to assemble the deal.

Netflix says the buy would give users more choice and let it “optimize its plans,” it will also expand its studio operations, while creating better value for talent and shareholders, with $2 billion-$3 billion in annual cost savings. The deal proposal has a break up fee of $5.8 billion, meaning that if the acquisition is scuttled in any way Netflix still has to pay Warner Bros. Discovery those billions.

The companies revealed the acquisition early Friday, altering the course of the entertainment business. Netflix said that it expects to maintain the current operations of Warner Bros. “including theatrical releases for films,” though specifics aside from topline deal numbers remain scarce. And that may be the focus of opposition to the acquisition as the dust settles on the announcement.

So other than the DCU and Loony Toons, I’m wondering just which major properties Netflix has bought.

There's a lot more than just what Netflix will now own to take into consideration. For example, WWE's Monday Night RAW airs on Netflix, while AEW airs on TNT and TBS who are owned by Warner Bros. Discovery. What's going to happen there?

Honestly, as Netflix seems legitimately interested in making movies, I'm pretty okay with this.

Netflix will keep putting WB movies in the the theater, but for a shorter period, as less time to see it in a theater is more consumer friendly.

Hostile bid by Paramount!*

Which ever party loses, the movie/limited series that they will make and will detail the shady back dealings/boardroom drama will be a banger! Thinking an ensemble cast, a la The Big Short as an example.

Netflix claimed they did not have enough money to pay creators' royalties for their content, then turn around and by WB.

Meanwhile, Paramount wants to buy WB to add onto the media empire of their evil Billionaire owners.

What's not to love about this!
