It is an oath we honour. Even when some soft southern burgher mutters about us, we know the reason he sleeps soft and comfortable, why his wife is able to complain about the price of cabbages as her most serious problem and why his children dare to throw dung and yell "Knot" when we pass. After getting back from playing Inquisitor with PDH et al. I felt inspired to do some more 28mm models (I've been doing a hell of a lot of teeny tiny 6mm models recently).

This guy is the first Space Marine I have painted in about 17 years. He is an Iron Warrior who has become lost among the stars and has been travelling for 10,000 years, trying to find his way back to the Imperium:

I have some more fluff I might post at some point, but the basic idea is that his ship crash landed after being flung through the Warp to the furthest reaches of the Galaxy, or even beyond. Living alone on a deathworld for thousands of years has exhausted his ammunition - forcing him to fashion crude weapons - and his sanity, because even for a near-immortal Space Marine there is only so long you can stay sane in a situation like that. He eventually escaped the planet and has been travelling through space to return to civilisation, although his motivations, allegiances and mental state are unknown.

He's a true-scale marine so is pretty huge, made from Deathshroud Terminator legs, the cloak from the Dark Vengeance Chaos Lord, the head from the Fantasy Chaos Warshrine (provided by PDH, thanks) and various other odds and ends.He has reforged his thunder hammer into a primitive hammer and carries a shield of scrap metal.

I enjoyed making the iron warrior so much that it might shape what comes next somewhat. I just really love cables and rust.

Minor crisis though - I've run out of Charadon Granite and there is no replacement for it. It's my favourite colour and I use it on pretty much everything, including all my bases. Anyone have a spare pot? Or any suggestions on how to replace it?

Thanks guys - Ephrael I think the postage from the US would be excessive for one pot of paint but Grimtuff I will take you up on your offer, cheers I will PM.

OK so next up:

This is a Dark Mechanicus Genetor or Gene-sculptor. He/she is particularly interested in the creation of Gholams and Chimerics - monstrous creatures that are a fusion of animal and human DNA and is an avid admirer of the teachings of the legendary Apothecary Bile.

This is the Genetor's pet cyber-scorpion, one of a menagerie of constructs that the Genetor treats like beloved children.

Still a bit more work to do on the Genetor (mainly just neatening up the GS) but I am really pleased with the model. Considering how messed up the regular Mechanicus are it's quite difficult to imagine how the Dark Mechanicus can be much worse. I have wanted to do an 'Island of Doctor Moreau' or 'Frankenstein' type thing for a while and I was having some trouble tying all my ideas together until I realised that the Dark Mechnanicus would be perfect for it - they can be involved with the icky genetic experiment side of Slaanesh (as Fabius Bile is) and they can also be involved with nasty body horror/machinery/etc. I might still make a Slaanesh cult but they might be a Mordheim gang now.

So is that Iron Warrior still loyal to the Emperor?

Yep I use a cable maker from Masq Mini.

I don't know if he is still loyal, I think he has developed some difficulties thinking about things like that after so long with no-one to talk to but himself. He doesn't know about the Heresy, but he has had a lot of contact with the Warp and things that whisper to him.

I got the idea from the Inquisimunda rulebook, but I think it is based on this paragraph from one of the Fantasy Flight books:

'Gholam and other Forbidden Fleshworks: A Gholam is an artificial construct made primarily of flesh and synthetic tissue by the arts of a gene-sculptor, although a widespread technology within the Adeptus Mechanicus, many branches of this lore are considered heretical and forbidden. These, in particular, include so-called "Murder Gholam"—horrific organic fabrications solely intended for violence, and homonculites—bio-forms fashioned from harvested human organs, alchemical serums and vat-grown tissue in the shape of a living thing with no natural origin. Rarer creations include "Chimerics"—strange amalgam creatures that combine many sources of DNA in often twisted monstrosities with utterly unpredictable results, forced psychic mutation, and unspeakable "slaver parasites"—artificial organic grafts that subvert the will and the bodily functions of those unfortunates they are inflicted upon.'

By the way I don't think the Gene-sculptor is really a woman any more, if it ever was. I think when you are so deeply involved in genetic tampering and surgery, things like that probably fall by the wayside. Whatever it looks like under that hood and those bandages, it's probably not pleasant.

Here is the next member of the gang:

A rather creepy chirugeon who is too obese to be bothered with walking, he now spends most of his time constructing grotesque gholam and freakish cherubim. He operates on his little toys with an almost child-like sense of glee.

I've got a bit carried away with this model and am not sure how much more I should add. I was considering adding some servo arms but I think they get a bit distracting and he is already quite a lot to take in.

I'm trying to do quite a different take on the Dark Mechanicus rather than the daemon engine / evil machine type that is more usual because I think Meade has pretty much done that look perfectly and I wouldn't have anything to add there. Guitarasmus too.

Wow wow wow! All three new models are amazing! The first guy is very well done. I absolutely love that militia tank commander head, and always wanted to use it for something, but never found the right model(yet ).

The fat fellow is really cool too. If I may give a bit of criticism, I'm not crazy about his goggles. They just look little cartoonish. There are some night vision type goggles from the SM scout sniper kit that may look a little more techy, but might work better, in my opinion.

I really like all the tubes, and just bought the tube/tentacle tool myself, so I'm eager to try it. Have you considered adding them on the legs as well? The FW daemon engines have tubing on the legs of a few models, and I think it would work well on yours. He already has a bunch of limbs, so servo arms may be overkill, but have you considered a few servo skulls floating around him? I like the idea that he is so large he needs little assistants to scurry around to do the tasks he can no longer do.

Anyway, just a few ideas. Keep up the awesome work!

You can never beat your first time. The second generation is shinier, stronger, faster and superior in every regard save one, and it's an unfair criticism to level, but it simply can't be as original. - Andy Chambers, on the evolution of Games Workshop games
