So, I am starting up a Space Marine fleet for a campaign.  I would like some advice for basic construction of a 2000 pnt fleet.  That's about it.

Don't go Crusier happy and take a good amount of escorts. They are not as sexy as the big boys but they are fast and work well in groups.

Sorry to hijack your thead DarkHellion, but I'm starting a Space Marine fleet in Gothic too. What do people think of the following 1500pt list? It fits what spacewolflord said, but do I have too many escorts?

Master of the Fleet 50
1 Re-Roll 25
Terminator Boarding Party 50
Battlebarge 425
Strike Cruiser 145
Strike Cruiser 145
3 x Gladius 135
3 x Gladius 135
3 x Nova 150
3 x Hunter 120
3 x Hunter 120

Any suggestions (Have bought everything except the Battlebarge so far)

It isn't Red Shirt as in Manchester United...

You do have a fast list with all those escorts and should do good against most fleets except Eldar will always out manuver you, and a good chance that you don't have the firepower to go up against Necrons. It should work well over all, just becareful of fleets with a lot of big guns for they will rip you apart.

Don't go cruiser happy?!?! The Marine Strike Cruiser is one of the best ships in the game. They're fast, maneuverable, and have 6+ armor on all facings. What's not to like?

I say get a bunch of them (like... 9 or so), and squadron them together. That way, you can combine thunderhawk flights as well as getting a good number of bombard cannons firing at the same target at the same time.

Oh and definitely get a few squadrons of Nova Frigates. Hands down, the BEST lance equiped frigate in the game.

What's not to like?
Their pathetically low firepower. Lack of damage points. And for being kings of boarding, they are not very majestic.
