Pretty much I'm trying to build an army list that isn't really cheesy but at the sime time isn't a push over army either.  The problem I find with Marines is that they tend to be either built really well and can be over bearing or are built pretty poorly and don't do so hot, with not a lot of room in between.

So this is what I came up with, trying to keep Assault Marines as the core of the force.

Traits: Blessed Be the Warriors/Without Allies

HQ
Master Commander - 101 Points
Power Weapon, Storm Shield, Frag Grenades

Reclusiarch - 107 Points
Bolt Pistol, Frags, Jump Pack

Elites
Assault Marine Squad - 241 Points
8 Assault Marines, 1 Flamer, 1 Plasma Pistol
Vet Sarge w/ Power Fist
All have Furious Charge

Assaults aren't your core if other squad types outnumer them.
Everything counts in large amounts...

...why not something more like...

Archangel's got a point about assault being your core.... If you are relying on the assault marines to break your opponent's line you need to field more of them.

Archangel's list has a distinct tilt towards assault that would probably get torn up pretty good on a minimal terrain battlefield against a more balanced opponent. Especially in an escalation game where only the devastators would show up. The razorbacks will become a magnet for anti-tank fire. They'd be better off in droppods. (The savings will buy you one more troop squad in a pod).

Here's my take on a fast moving list.

Blessed be the warriors, Have faith in suspicion

HQ (120)
(1) Captain w/jump pack, thunder hammer, storm shield (120)
Elites (710)
(8) Assault squad w/ 2x pp, furious, and vet sgt (p.fist) (240)
(8) Assault squad w/ 2x pp, furious, and vet sqt (p. fist) (240)
(7) Assault squad w/ 2x pp, furious, and vet sqt (l. claws) (230)
Troops (350)
(5) Scout squad w/ bolters + missile (75)
(5) Scout squad w/ bolters + missile (75)
(5) Tactical squad w/ plasma + Lascannon (100)
(5) Tactical squad w/ plasma + Lascannon (100)
Fast Attack (320)
(2) Tornado Squadron (160)
(2) Tornado Squadron (160)

This list relies on solid tactical manuvering (e.g. hiding and flanking) but it should be able to handle itself. There is room for tinkering with the HQ it could also be the following:

Blessed be the warriors, Have faith in suspicion
HQ (112)
(1) Reclusiarch w/ jump pack, bolt pistol, frags, meltabombs (112)
Elites (717)
(8) Assault squad w/ 2x pp, furious, and vet sgt (p.fist) (240)
(8) Assault squad w/ 2x pp, furious, and vet sqt (p. fist) (240)
(8) Assault squad w/ 2x flamer, furious, and vet sqt (p.wpn) (237)
Troops (350)
(5) Scout squad w/ bolters + missile (75)
(5) Scout squad w/ bolters + missile (75)
(5) Tactical squad w/ plasma + Lascannon (100)
(5) Tactical squad w/ plasma + Lascannon (100)
Fast Attack (320)
(2) Tornado Squadron (160)
(2) Tornado Squadron (160)

The final list is very similar to your original list Voodoo boyz except it has more fast moving firepower and less anti-tank. The two lascannons and two missile launchers should be enough to give you a chance to take out heavy armor at range in the first two turns. The powerfists/ meltabombs/ should be able take out most remaining armor.

You're right in that they're not as much of the "core" of the army with only 16 of them. The problem is that's all I own assault marine wise at the moment (well I own 19, but you get the idea).

I figure that the key to getting assault marines to survive is having enough other units to draw fire. The tornados do that pretty well, as well as helping to take out any fragile fast moving units that threaten the assault marines. The part about them being "the core" of the army is trying to design a list that ensures that my squads make it to the enemy alive and relatively in tact to do what they do best.

I do like some of the lists posted, but they're not as useable for me since I don't have the models ot make them work at the moment. I do appreciate the ideas, though I'm not keen on the razorbacks.
