@Brian: Wise words my friend. OK, I'll just gloss the gems and fix the little brown stain. The rest will stand.

@dstein: Gloss coat is a bit heavy for what I had in mind. Vallejo satin vanished gives a nice, gentle shine without being so heavy handed.

@Radiation: Thank you, and welcome to the blog!

@Reiko: The feedback more than helps... it's essential to making me the modeler and painter that I've become. Keep it coming. I always appreciate good advice.

@weety: Thank you so much! Not yet... I usually figure about 10 days from the UK to me (or vise-versa). I'll keep my eye out for it. You'll see it here when it shows up.

So, here's a question for you. After I take care of the last two little issues, do you think it would be worth sending pics of this figure to CMON or GW? I've never done it before... not really something I need to do (emotionally)... but I know it's a possibility. Anyone with any experience want to weigh in?

You know you spend too much time thinking about painting when you're doing your morning get-ready-for-work ritual and you're mumbling the things you have yet to do... and one of them is... "comb the hair, airbrush it..." (when you really mean blow-dry it).

*sigh*

Looks good. I really like the glow idea on the backback.

How original.

On to that special project?

I'd send it to GW or at least put it in their flickr pool. It's a unique take on something and quite different too. Also rather impressive. Bound to get some sort of commentary at least.

Nope. Have an MoTF to finish... Then two LS Storms. Then I'll work on some grot tanks while I do some research. THEN I might be ready for the special project. Maybe.

nononono..I'm not talking about giving the thing a 1/16" thick hardcoat or anything

... but gloss varnishes are not as scary as people think. You get different effects from the paint below by using different combinations of gloss, satin, and flat coats. so, glossing something, and then re-applying a flat coat over it gives a different effect than just a flat coat alone.

I think you should send a pic to GW, there's nothing to lose by it.

If you get your pic on GW's site you'll become even more famous if thats possible

You can send it to this email address whatsnewtoday@gwplc.com or post on their flicker pool, no idea about that though.

Here's the page where you get the email address from top right corner red box.

Models looking sweet as always Gits. In all honesty, I'm not too keen on Tycho's 'pimp my space marine' look and think he'd look better in yellow but the paint job itself is stunning.

P.S. I can't wait for the MotF to hit the paint station - good luck!!!

I'd like to comment on why Tycho is gold since it's clear it rubs some of you the wrong way. There is a method to my madness believe it or not.

1. When I "steal" a character from another chapter, I usually like to leave something on him that is a reminder of where he came from. My Master of Scouts (Telion counts-as), still has the ultra symbol on his bolt gun for example. Tycho is gold in homage to his origin as a blood angel commander... he also has one tear-drop shaped gem on his right forearm.
2. I wanted to set him apart from the rank-and-file.
3. I've already made this...

And one, hijacked, screaming yellow sternguard character is enough for any army!

Thanks everyone for your great advice and infinite patience while I spam the interwebs with mostly-finished Tychos... Here are the two pics I sent to GW... did my last little tweaks and now I'll be putting him to bed with his fellow Mantis Warriors.

Kantor still has the fist on his belt. That's the homage right there.

In the email to GW, did you give an explanation as to why he looks different from standard, etc etc Gits?

Gunner will be permanently mounted. I'll do one other scout per LS Storm that will be magnetized, so I can keep track of which squads are mounted/dismounted. I have lost track of that before believe it or not.

Gits nice OSL on Tycho!! I like that whole when I steal a character thing. But when I "borrow" a character I try to make it my own chapter, but understand with Tycho he is hard to make into a Dark Angel or any other chapter not related to the BA's. Great job!

Glad you've hamlet'd him, horatio-gits. Sometimes, you just have to walk away from the mini! Great work, look forward to seeing it in GW's big bag o' internet (fingers, toes and other appendages crossed).

@GDOne: Thanks! I usually try to keep the reference to the original chapter very subtle... just something to knowledge the fact that I'm chapter shopping.

@graven: *chuckle* Yes, well... "parting is such sweet sorrow"... but it was time to put him down. I haven't heard/seen anything from GW & don't know if it's even something they'll be interested in showing. But we'll see.

I hope to start work on finishing the MoTF today as it's a (pseudo) day off. Have to spend some time considering exactly what I'm going to "fix".

Automatically Appended Next Post:

I just want to state for the record what utter CRAP last year's paint job on my MoTF was. Seriously... if it wasn't for all the build work and unique parts that went into it, I'd have chucked it in the bin. Couldn't believe it when I took a good, close look at it this morning.

So, here's where I start the project...

It's worth noting that this pic is listed as MoTF WIP3... so it's obviously never been suggested that it was finished. I was also really, really sick when I finished this up for last year's Adepticon. The only reason I actually made it to the event was that Solar_lion showed up at my door and said "just get in the car, I'll do the rest"... and he pretty much did.

So, I'm working on the red first... that and the white bits. We'll see if I can save it.

@Gir: Thank you sir, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

@Rogue: Wonderful stuff called Micro Kristal Klear. Trick I picked up from model railroading. Looks like thick white glue. Just spread it across a gap with a toothpick or some such and it dries like a pane of glass.

OK, today's progress. Worked on a little bit of everything actually. Hard to pin it down. Red, green, white, black, robot arms, clamps, skin... you name it.
