Living for livings sake is a hollow existence. A life with meaning, toil and hardship give substance to it. In the imperial guard they give that and a sense of camaraderie and brotherhood that inspires loyalty and pride in imperial guard ranks. Plus due to doctrine, propaganda and the like most imperials prefer the familiar smothering oppression of the imperiums way of life than the unknown horrors that lie out there in the vastness of space. Theres always exceptions to the rule though.
