This thread is 100% from start space marine entries. So how to NOT play SM vs SM when the theme is SM legions?
So youre either trolling me or EF. 
As those surviving NL count partially as SM too ( the less insane maybe ...), no way to evade the mandatory vote on SM. 
There are several flavors available, red, dark green, yellow, black, green, grey, blue, white and dark blue SM.

^Depends upon whether you consider the CSM and the SM's the same thing. I feel that there is enough to distinguish the CSM as a stand alone army worth having a seperate codex. 
Now, I will agree that the CSM models are the same level of ugly as the SM. Someday I will be able to afford the 100 Grey Knight models need for converting into an SW or DA Army.  Until then or until GW makes some GK's in plastic, I will continue abhoring the SM models and even afterward will continue to push for a stream-lining of the codices in order to allow for greater variation of armies.

Timeline: Horus Heresy.
Thus all of them are space marines.
The divide happened after some chose to be slaves of weird denizens of the warp.
Maybe they could be considered Traitor space marines, but choas?
CSM would be correct later, but then the Luna wolves would be Sons of Horus then and John decided to go with LunaWolves....
Also, we can't have GK, didn't exist at M30+x. Why not try to find out who were the ancestors of the GK and vote for them?
CSM have their own codex. But thats a different thread.
Now if we consider M41 as "actual" date this should hint at things beeing different at M32. As space marine legions wouldn't encounter Tyranids or Tau, but SM chapters and CSM warbands do.

I'm not so sure that it is so perfectly defined as that. You had an SM Primarch that showed clear signs of mutation and if I remember correctly, the Imperium tolerated warp spawned mutation to some extent until the Heresy. While many of the legions could be classified as traitorous it seems just as many could have already been considered as chaos.
BTW, My reference about GK's was not about how I want them in this game but how their older armour is a design I like as opposed to the current incarnation of SM power armour.
Then there is the fact that I also don't like how the BT's were rewritten as a second founding.
Overall, just chalk my my opposition up to a need to subvert the dominant paradigm. Honestly, f my favorite army ever becomes a powerhouse army that is easy to win with, I will probably get very bored with it very quickly. Go figure.
