Tried my first SPG, its fun, pretty fun.

I love my artie, I play my KV because I have to to get the better tanks after it :( I keep telling myself I'm gonna keep the KV and upgrade to all 3 tanks it can get after it... but the artie tank takes something like 160k xp :( But, it would be nice to have 2 top tier arty tanks to choose from. when one is blow'd up I can just switch to the other.

I think I will just take the shortest route and get the KV3 next. I was thinking it's a waste to go out of my way to get all this stuff when it's all gonna be deleted and we have to start from scratch again when the beta is done.

I have the Panzer4 now and upgraded everything, just burning xp into the VK3601, i disliked it at first and much preferred my panzer3, but with the 70mm high penetrating gun i can finally put some hurt into heavy tanks (take that KV's! 1 shot me before huh!?). But the only issue i find is that sometimes the teams are just way too unbalanced, like a tiger II against KV's... and a jagdtiger against... well anything, i'd prefer to face a IS-3 than that thing any day.

But if you don't then why even bother? Sure it's going to get vaped but if you're not working your way up then you might as well stop playing.

How long's the Beta gonna run?

I do want to work my way up thats why I don't want to spend too much time unlocking these 2 other side tanks off the KV when the list goes down farther if I jump right into the KV3 Just trying to get the best use out of the time left even though it should be a while.. I heard it was supposed to be released in "early 2011"

thats also why I wanna save my gold for the premium account, so I can get to the real big tanks faster

I skipped the VK3601 and went with the VK3001H. It's a fast tank with the same 75mm L/70 gun as you are using right now. It's slightly less survivable than the PzIV, but not nearly as much so as I thought it would be, and once you factor in the speed, it's probably about the same. From the VK3001H you can upgrade directly to the Tiger and eventually the Panther on the medium tank tree.

Just picked up a Leopard and I've almost upgraded my Panzer IIIA to maximum (it's still turd though).

I'm kinda getting discouraged :( game is more fun with noobier tanks, once you start getting big ones they're slow bullet magnets. I spend more time just dying over and over than acutally playing. Averaging abour 50xp a game so that means means I'll be getting my next tank just in time for the world to end in 2012.

Eh, it's about range. The small tanks all have guns that are only reliable armor penetrators at short range so you have to mix it up. The big boys though mount guns that can blow a hole in you if they can see you and silhouettes the size of billboards so you've got to play a much more patient game.

Oh, and last night some jackass in a King Tiger decided that since I wasn't out scouting in my PzIII he'd just blow me away because I wasn't doing my job. Apparently babysitting the arty wasn't worthwhile.

Must have been a full moon last night 'cause I saw a lot of blue on blue going on too. Friendly fire isn't.

Also had some dumbass in a medium deliberately block the road for my Luchs so I couldn't get in front. Then we both died 'csuse we couldn't see what was coming. :(

Quick question: what do the numbers and chevrons in the little grey boxes next to some players mean on the loading screen?

If I'm in a fur ball with other tanks and someone misses and accidentally smacks me I don't let it bother me, it happens. Maybe watch your fire next time but whatever. This wan an intentional, roll up behind me, take aim, and shove an 88mm round up my PzIII's ass.

Scout? Please. He wanted me to roll out into a kilometer wide open expanse of grass and get my ass shot off so that he could get a target for a moment to try and take a shot at. That was it. There was no way I could survive long enough to actually do any real scouting. He just wanted me to roll out and get blown away so he could take a pot shot at someone.

Ugh, still pissed about it.

Anyways, seeing my skill level steadily improve. HE rounds and SPGs don't get along at all.

i think you are referring to the "Platoon" (squad, up to 3 tanks) mechanic. If you are a premium player you can invite 1-2 of your friends (they dont have to be prem) so that you are always guaranteed to fight on the same side on the same battle. Problem is though even as a MS1 you can fight IS7's depending on the highest tank in the party. And then theres the people who band together since they all have super tanks

Most satisfying moment last night. A Luch thought it was going to play ring around the rosy with me right up to the point where I put an HE round into his tracks and blew them off. He plinks a round uselessly off my glacis as I load an AP round then blow his ass away.

I love kiting ks-3's. So enjoyable to watch their fail turrets move with me.

Heh, had an awesome match last night. I had my Leo and was put in a match in Lakeville with all T3 or lower tanks. Scored 8 kills out of it, all on the move...it was a blast

Yeah, the match making gets a little wonky sometimes. Was in a match with predominantly Pz III's, IV's, T-34's, etc. and some poor schmuck in a Leichtractor was stuck in there. Poor bastard.

Sometimes it seems like balance is almost non existent. Like a balanced game is a total fluke.

KV is a "heavy tank" yet still I'm matched up with opponents that can easily 1-shot me, from seemingly clear across the board that I can't even see.. and not arty either. Even if I'm hiding in bushes or behind something or whatever. When there's just no contest at all, it makes the game seem like a complete waste of time.

Add to that, the heavier your tank gets the bigger the baby you become, and "high level" games become boring camp fests with people afraid to move at all.

There are fun balanced games where you can play till the end or if you're knocked out you actually want to stick around and watch, but those seem few and far between the higher up you get.

The problem is simple, this game isn't meant to be balanced. It's balanced because the teams are not nation specific. Balance between tanks of certain tiers isn't going to happen. These tanks are based on the real life vehicles and as such some are going to perform better than others.

Tiger vs. IS-1 or IS-2. The Tiger was designed earlier in the war an the Stalin series were a direct counter to those tanks. The Tiger still had flat, slab sides while the IS series used the Russian's superior sloping armor technique. Ricochets and lack of penetration will be far more common against the IS series than the Tigers. That's the same in largely all the tanks. T-34 vs. PzIII and PzIVs, T-44 vs. Panther, etc. What you're seeing in the tiers is typically the German design and then the Russian design that came along a year or two later as a direct response to it. If you want to be technically accurate about it the Soviet tank lines should end with the IS-2 and T-34-85. The later IS tanks and T-44 were all post war tanks.

However that would be a problem. If you try and match up the tiers by chronological order you'd wind up going the other way with German Pz IIIs and IVs positively terrorizing early war Russian tanks. Panthers laughing as they blew away T-34's with impunity and King Tigers kicking the crap out of everyone else.

The real life tanks were never meant to be balanced and I pray they never "balance" these tanks out. I like the fact that they are accurately modeled. Their current scheme does leave something to be desired honestly as late or post war soviet tanks are in the same class as mid war German tanks but I'm not seeing how else to combat that with moving the tiers around. Most likely you should see the costs of the tanks in terms of XP and money be adjusted with the late and post war Soviet tanks costing a fortune.

Well the KV is one of Russia's first heavies, its not particularly extravagant (much like early versions of the churchill and the B2 Char) I also find it more as an infantry support tank (again like the churchill) since anti tank guns such as the 88 can make easy prey out of it. Of course there is no such thing as infantry in this game so that point is mmot. People told me though that the 107mm gun is a good weapon for it (albiet taking up quite a bit of xp) Try to travel in groups, people will often target bigger things than you such as IS's (or hide behind them!)

I do well enough playing artillery, but there are some games I load to find enemies in my face firing.

Otherwise, it seems to be suitably random.

The KV is just frustrating period, as is the KV-3 or KV-IS, although slightly less so. Really when you compare them to the same tier in the german line, you are still in mediums. Once you get past the KVs, you get into the IS tanks which are great heavy tanks. The Tiger is just as frustrating as the KV is, but at least with the KV, you don't take nearly as bad of repair costs. The thing with heavies is you have to have support, especially with the really cruddy ones (KV series, Tiger). If you try and go rambo, you'll just end up bankrupting yourself.

I've had some luck with the Marder II. In predominantly medium matches the long 5cm is giving me good results even against frontal armor. I need to work on thinking about positioning like an SPG not like a tank. What I'd consider good cover in a tank is actually pretty crappy in an SPG.

Bought some artillery for the first time this morning. Holy crap is ammo expensive. 150 a shot for the most bottom tier artillery. It must get horrific for the higher level stuff.

Its not too bad. You make 5-20k or more each battle. I can wipe my ammo clean off of my poor SU5 (14 stupid shots) and still make a profit. I dont know though about the Tier 5 ones. They could be way more expensive than my other tier 5 stuff

I'm not sure what # my gun is now, but it's a short stubby one that hits super hard, but takes a real long time to reload. I've been able to nail stuff in one shot with a good hit and I've been getting better and turning my tank along with the turret to get to the targets quicker. I'm tempted to get the gun that you need the big square turret for, but I think I'm just gonna blow through and get the KV3 and leave this tank far behind.

Depends, on bad losses I'm only making 2000 to 3000. A good solid win where I get a few can net me 10K though. If I get this thing blown out from under me and shot all my ammo I could be flirting with losing money for the first time. I need to give this thing a try out, not sure how targeting goes with arty.

Probably one of the "Howitzer" guns (the AP is a wierd number)

Fun to use. Great thing is it basically can at least damage anything. Had one on my SU85. Although I kept feeling like a direct fire artillery to entire time (which what you are basically when using that gun, albeit more armored)
