Two other things -

1. I personally am proud of all members of Team USA. I know that none of them caved under pressure, worked as hard as possible and positively contributed to the team effort this year. Kudos to all of my team mates.

2. I also have to give Tony's parents (Carla and Paul) mad props. They fully support Tony and his brother Andy (a golden demon winner), dropped a pretty penny to ensure he could be here in Switzerland with them as guardians and were there throughout the entire event. It was great to finally meet Tony, have some laughs (and beer because his parents are frickin' cool as hell) and see him wreck a lot of people.

One final note - the representation across the clubs and US is increasing even more. We had members from BOLS, Wrecking Crew, Da Boyz, Codex Toledo and two independents. I see the selection process opening that up even more for the 2012 team, which is sweet. If you are interested in possibly qualifying, check out the following link:

Do the ETC Captains ever discuss the possibility of opening up additional spots for larger countries? I.e. the USA - we are big enough to have mulitple teams represent. NE, SE, Midwest, West.

Congrats guys! I'm prouder of the tie for best sport honestly as at something like this that would mean more to me too. Awesome job. Next year 1st place

@Aldonis

Basically you'd have to form a team from one of our protectorates though I'm not sure how it would work. I brought it up before the first year and they are pretty solid on only allowing the United States itself 1 team even if all of Europe could fit into one of our states

Thanks for all the kind words guys, we work hard to represent all the US 40k players, and we are really excited to have won the first ever ETC Medal for the USA. We are equally honored to share the best sportsmanship prize with our close friends the Swedes. We know we are ambassadors for all USA 40k players, and so always play with honor and enthusiasm.

I'm really proud of my guys, our team played their hearts out and everyone did exactly what I expected of them. Two years ago, no one in the States had heard of the ETC. Now we have won a medal, invented a robust qualification process, and generated a lot of enthusiasm for the event in our country. I'm pretty proud of that.

In the coming days and weeks I'll do my best to give the play by play people are looking for and summarize the great experience we had.

Congrats to the 40K team! Sorry we couldn't scrape out a few extra points on the fantasy side to bring home a double medal for the US, but I think we are going to be in excellent position next year.

All the fantasy guys are really proud of you guys. We need to work on a coordinated outfit next year!

You know the Europeans...they follow soccer teams as what is allowed in the ETC. That is why the UK gets to send 4 teams when California is bigger than all 4 of them combined by almost anyway you want to measure it.

Here is a list of countries that are in FIFA
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_men%27s_national_association_football_teams#UEFA_.28Europe.29

Now as Hulksmash said, there might be some wiggle room if you are motivated enough. Last year the Danes sent 2 teams. One for Denmark, and one representing the Faroe Islands (And yes, I had never heard of it before either). So the precedence has been set where you can form a team off of a territory. So it might be possible to form a US Virgin Island team or a Puerto Rico team.

Sure, provided that at least 4 of the players on any team can prove their nationality is thus (so passport, or birth certificate, or parent(s) birth certificate(s)) and that nation is FIFA recognised they can enter.

If they can't they are likely to be turned away at the door and will have made a quite expensive trip for nothing. This is why there was no Team Faeroe Islands this year.

It is an interesting idea to ask the top Generals from 4 major events to play on the American team for the next ETC. I remember a German player from this year (I think it was Germany) saying so and so was the best Tyranid player in Germany. The best Tyranid player in Germany might never win a tournament because of his codex, but that doesn't mean he doesn't give his ETC team the best chance to win.

Wouldn't it be a better idea to take some of the best, veteran players from 8 different army books rather than take 4 of the best Grey Knight (I chose a random army) players and then hope 3 of them can adapt to another army?

Maybe the Europeans can keep their European Team Championship tournament and the Americans can start the World Team Championships over here.

And that would be different from the ETC how? If you mean so as to allow multiple American teams to enter as individual states then surely that is what the ATC is for?

This is one of the biggest weaknesses of the American selection process (IMO). There are codexes that are better then others, and you could end up with 4 Space Wolf players, or Grey Knight players or whatever the flavor of the year is. Heck, you could be a mediocre player and win a tournament with 6 Psyfleman dreads with Coteaz and his zoo crew/purifier spam.

If you are asking people to switch armies and you will never be as good as a good player who knows their army inside and out.

We're a really big country and the "national scene" just isn't really there for the USA like it is in say, the UK.

Compound that with the fact that the trip for any American (or Aussie, New Zealander, etc) is going to be inherently more expensive than it would be for someone from say, the UK, to make due to air fare....you only have a limited pool of "great players" who can make that commitment to play at the ETC.

I say good on the guys putting that kind of thing together, and trying to have some kind of system where the few larger regional events can help decide who can get on the big team. Our system will have a lot of flaws, but the problem it's trying to solve is complex enough that any answer that would work is not going to be ideal.

To try and come back to the thread....in a similar "seeing hobby-friends I've not seen in a while - I had head over to my local GW for an escalation tourney and saw some old friends, and later I check on this thread and I find out one of the guys I saw was on our ETC team (Go Paul, east coast represent!).

Congratulations to the US team and everyone else involved in the ETC.

European friend sent me the top 8 lists from the singles tournament and I found these quite interesting. Grey Knights won it all but Eldar did quite well along with Tyranids and Orks making a showing. Only one Space Wolves and list is a bit different then usual only 1 long fang squad. A bit different then what we see in the US. There was no special characters allowed so that changes things somewhat.

Random aside, but apparently that screenshot of Germany, Tony's game, the guy winning 18-2 is ... well, wrong / error / etc.

Game was an 11-9 or 11-8 win for the German, with a tie on Primary and Secondary respectively.

Yup. Many of the other teams work all year long on getting a mix of armies on the teams, deciding who will play what army, discussing each others armies, and team captains asking players to use different styles of list. The pairings of who plays who is a huge part of the tournament, and a team may need you to play something a bit different than your usual, so they have an army to match up against certain other armies.

They also practice, practice, practice against specific builds and lists, expecting that they may get matched up against those. It's not enough to know someone plays grey knights. The captain has to know the build you're using, and how well he can expect you to do if he tosses you up against a certain army. Or throws your army out, and lets the other guy pick your opponent.

Just taking 8 guys who took first at 8 tournaments won't be the best team. Half will need new armies. All will need the finances to go abroad. They'll need to be a lot of co-ordination in the months before the event.

The US team is still going to be way behind the curve on the little games and politics that lead up to the actual games. Which makes taking third even more of an achievement.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Getting my broom incase there is shenanigans.

The singles tournament got me thinking.

Our guys do awful at that tournament. I think it might be because they are not as familiar with their armies as the others at it. Jon W. is really a Space Wolf player who brought Grey Knights, and Nick is of course an IG player who recently started playing DE. He brought his Black Templar out of moth balls from 4 years ago, and they both finished rather poorly.

I did a quick break down of the points for the first 4 rounds (and yes I know that a lot of factors go into it) but the worst performing armies are the ones that are not their normal armies (Shawn, Nick and Jon) Jay also performed below average, but there are reasons for that.

Or possibly how pointless allot of the tinkering is.

Good players will beat "good" lists, the idea of getting a player to alter tournament winning play style and lists seems counter intuitive to me.

I wonder if there are plans to hold the event in the US at any point?

About as soon as the US is part of Europe I'd imagine.

The single player event at ETC was only 28 people IIRC. I might be wrong, but wasn't most players local Switzerlanders, and very few were actually ETC players, making the event a lot less competitive?
And I guess the ETC players who took part in the single event had to do with the list they brought, meant for the team event.

The players placed 1st and 6th are from the Finnish team.
Denis in second place is in Belarus team but lives in Sweden.
4th, 5th and 8th are all on the German team.
The two other guys I'm unsure of, but as you see, most players are ETC-players.

Since we had Denis' army in our car, I don't get how he managed to play with it in the ESC.
Go Denis!
