Because this came up several times now:

The new pots including the Foundation pots were never meant to stay open for taking paint from the lid. If you try, the paint pours down on the outside of the pot. The Foundation pots had a stopper (!) to prevent people from opening the lid too far, but it got misinterpreted as a pin to keep it open, so they removed that pin. GW wants everyone to use a pallette or surface from which paint is taken, not the lid anymore.

Ah OK I wasn't aware of it, thanks that explains it then!

On that note does anyone have links to good wet palettes or tutorials on ways to make one yourself?

I'd suggest going to your local fine arts store. They're neither difficult nor expensive to build yourself, but mine cost $10 and included several sheets of the paper.

Foundations and Washes won't change, so I don't care. Foundations and Washes are the only thing GW has on other paint companies. Their colours are mediocre at best.

Don't get me wrong! I'm an avid GW paint user, and don't use anything else besides them and certain cheap hobby paints (like black). I bought the Mega Paint Set last year, and the only things I'm low on I doubt they'll change (red gore, boltgun, mechite, badab and Baal red). If they remove red gore I will cry though.

Hoping for either better pots or a new business model for them (like selling them in sets. They stopped doing it with washes and foundations right before I bought the MPS). GW's written too much material on how to use their paints too. I don't think they'll change it too much.

Nothing is changing with foundation or the washes, from what I hear.

That's good to hear since I'm not particularly attached to the GW range apart from the Foundations and washes. Wish I had read your info before my last post. However, I can't really say it's a problem to have a couple years worth of Devlan Mud. So no harm done.

To be honest i was going to post a thread positing that they have ALREADY changed their paints. It seemed like my catachan green and a few other paints were short on pigment. Way more watery than they used to be, and they dont cover at all well. ANyone else notice this.?

Hey Necron Lord make your own - I use a plastic container we get with takeaway Chinese food in the UK, several layers of absorbent kitchen towel and a layer of greaseproof baking paper. Put the paper towel in the bottom, wet it a bit (not too much) and put the greaseproof paper on top, remember to close the lid tight each time and paint will stay wet for days on end.

Another sales rep input, posted by kalon over at Warseer:
Hey ho chaps, my FLGS owner has been given a somewhat cryptic nod about something that may be happening with the paints. The owner was advised not to order in bulk and that if all they need are top ups then to order single pots. the rep said that he didn't know anymore and if he did he wouldn't be able to say. The rep did use the phrase "something radical is happening" I guess he means to the paints. Anyway, that's what I know, which isn't much. Are any other members able to enlighten?

I hope they need bigger racks for a larger range of colors. Vallejo is kicking their ass because of that. Why the hell does GW not have scaly green, brazen brass, or tentacle pink anymore? Those were oft used and important colors in the spectrum. I hope it's not a formula change, as their paints are fine as it is, but dropped bottles would be great.

I don't think it has anything to do with the racks, otherwise they wouldn't advise against ordering paints. I can see a change to dropper bottles being fairly likely.

Anyone else notice that a major change in paint or pot is always proceeded by a big "limited edition" Master Paint Set release a la this Christmas...? Offloading of stock anyone...? Or am I just as cynical as everyone else on here...? ;0)

No, that makes sense, actually.

Dropper bottles suck. If GW switched to them I will toss a brick through their store window with a note that says "We warned you about dropper bottles- Vallejo"

Dropper bottles force you to either waste more paint than you actually need, or take less than desired and keep fetching for more. Yeah, they make mixing and wetblending and all that jazz much easier, but for most casual painters, dropper bottles are just a burden.
Seeing as GW's market is mainly amateur and casual painters, I don't see dropper bottles as a wise move either.

Butcher/wax paper. you put the paint on that like a pallet, place the wax paper on a wet papper towel, and the moisture from the paper towel keeps the paint workable.

I know many people at my local store share that same feeling. If they went to dropper, the ones who actually paint their models would jump ship to P3. Lot of people have the bad habit of painting from the pot (and I was guilty up to... on model ago).

Some older evidence, posted 24th November on Warseer:
thane wrote:Was just lookin around the net and found these pictures.

O.O Old gw paint pots with new Citadel Paint labels.

Could Games Workshop be going back to there old far better paint pots

For me personally if this is true I would love it, I hate the pots now. They are a pain to paint with as the lid never stops open and you end up gettin paint all over your brushes.

Anyone else heard about about this??

ihavetoomuchminis wrote:I was told not long ago about new paints. Didn't know if it were going to be just new pots, or really new formula. I see it's new pots. Still don't know about the formula.

And from August:
igwarlord wrote:So i got a phone call from my father today and he wanted to know what the name of that game was i had sunk tons of money into and who made it.
I told him it was warhammer 40k by games workshop.
He then asked if they were based out of England.
yeah

My father works for a chemical plant in Michigan and one of the things they do is make paints pigments. Super high quality paint. He had just had some super long meeting yesterday with people from GW for a bid. i guess about making some 50 odd colors of level 42 paints for them to be put in small containers.
the level is how high of quality it is based on a scale of 1-50. 1 being painted with mud and 50 being the paint that is used to restore priceless works of art.

easiest thing in the world, get a square sized tupperware that will hold a sponge, dampen sponge, cover sponge with piece of parchment paper(sold right next to tin foil at the market)
voila Wet Pallette ,when finished close the top to the tupperware, paint has lasted 3-4 days like this for me.
Be sure to change or microwave the sponge every week or it will get moldly and reek.

Coat D'Arms still do Deadly Nightshade, not sure if it's the same but this is their pink

I'm possibly looking at switching to Coat D'arms, I'm yet to check out Vallejo and Reaper - will do that later.
Also need to find a decent, cheap alternative to Citadel Spray paints (specifically black) if anyone has any reccomendations.

I wonder if this is a reaction to the popularity of other brands. After seeing GW release static grass tufts in response to the popularity of army painters line i cant help but think that they mite be responding to the popularity of these other companies paint lines. It would be nice to see color primers return as well. If the pics above are accurate then i'm a bit let down seems like they are just bringing old pots back and those pots aren't that much better than the current pots.

Wow... that is a blast from the past. The original paint pots? Maybe it's cheaper to produce them (and they'll no doubt come with a 30% price rise to celebrate this fact).

If they do come with a price rise - and the assumption, given GW's track record, is not unwarranted - then it'll be explained as bigger pots holding more paint.

A P3 pot (which are the same size as the old-school GW pots) holds 18ml. The hexagonal flip-tops (going by my Boltgun Metal) holds 12ml. My pots of washes (going by my new Devlan Mud) also holds 12ml (though if someone with a standard pot can confirm, that'd be good).

If the new pots hold 18ml, we'll see a 33-50% pay rise.

I used to have a LOT of trouble with the current "no-stop, flip-top" pots drying out.
My FLGS paint pro suggested using rubbing alcohol instead of h2o to thin it out. It can even resurrect the dreaded "solid-pot" (when you pull out a bottle that you haven't used in a week or so - or a year - and it has mysteriously hardened to the consistency of Fine-cast).

" It says in the rules that if there are no models from one side left on the table, then that side has lost. What it DOESN'T say is that I can't pick my opponent's models up and throw them on the floor, so if I'm losing the game, all I have to do is pick my opponents models up and throw them on the floor, and then I WIN! YAY! Woohoo. Loophole: FOUND! "

However we recommend you don’t run too low on the top 20 paints ahead of the change at the end of March,

Its no Rumor. I am a gamestore owner and GW has given us the "Shut the Zog up and dont tell anyone....yet" Notice that we need to start selling down and not restock out paint.
At least that is what my rep told me. Keep everything at a low point because they are coming out with a new range and a rack that comes with it.

Its all going to be squeeze bottles like Valejo Paints!
