Basecoat plus some contrast will be good enough here. Now to go back and work on bases.

Some lovely painting here, especially some of the transition between colours. I also appreciate the work ethic re. getting models done, as it’s something I’ve recently embraced too now I’m hitting 40!

Thanks, guys.

I've wrapped up the bases, so have completed 6 models for the year so far.

And I've decided to start on a new project that I've had sitting around for a while.

Woke up at 2am and haven't been able to get back to sleep. Decided to work on my Maelstrom's Edge models while I watch an episode of Nova. It's about the Milky Way and they keep talking about spiral arms and, maybe it's the lack of sleep, but I keep finding it amusing.

Working 2nd shift and taking a Masters class leads to not much hobby time. Just wrapped up the class so I wanted to put paint on something. Quick sloppy job with primarily Contrast, but overall felt good to do something. This was a Bones USA mini, so that means it was a type of Siocast plastic. It had some mold lines that were not pleasant to remove. Hopefully they develop a version of it that is easier to work with.

That's a nifty wizard. Did you apply it straight over the primer, or did you do some pre-highlighting/drybrushing?

Now showing The Fellowship of the Ring, along with some Dreadball Captains!

Painting total as of 4/13/2024: 31 plus a set of modular spaceship terrain

Painting total for 2023: 79 plus 28 Battlemechs and a Dragon-Balrog

Thanks!

Primed black then heavy drybrush with white. I usually either do that or put a zenithal coat of gray in between. I know Contrast was designed to go over a light basecoat, but I like to help push the "contrast" with the black or gray basecoat and a white drybrush. It also helps to make all the individual parts "pop" so they're easier to pick out. Plus if you're working quick and don't let the Contrast paint completely dry between colors, when it pools in the black recesses you can't really tell that the colors are mixing.

Like I said, it was a quick sloppy job and the above technique helps get it done faster with less fiddling about details.

Cool. Thanks for the mini-tutorial. My son has been accumulating his own collection of minis, but doesn't enjoy the painting stage as much as the gaming stage. Contrast and/or Speedpaints seem like they'd be a good way for him to get his own stuff done so I don't have to.

For a sloppy job it is a very nice result! It seems varying in intensity basecoat works with Contrast and Instant paint lines better than with inks. And mixing of not completely dry colors is as annoying as reactivation. :(

Painting progress tracker:
2017: 50 of 50 planned; 2018: 80 of 60 planned; 2019: 75 of 75 planned

Thanks, Wirecat.

Here's another one I started today. Primed black then a grey zenithal then heavy white drybrush.

Will try to paint this one primarily with Contrast as well, but will use regular paints as needed to clean things up.

And here it is pretty much finished. Quick and sloppy, but looks fine from three feet away. Mostly painted with Contrast, but used normal acrylic for the skin, parchment, and gold/yellow bits.

Quick job on the bases and boom. I wrapped up two minis. Feels good to make some progress and not care about perfection.

Next batch of random Reaper minis. No rhyme or reason, just a handful that a buddy gave me. Not sure which to start with, but will be attempting more quick and dirty paint jobs.

What a fun set of models. I want to see either L'il Cthulhu of the six-armed skeleton first.

I think I'll tackle the 6-armed skeleton first as that should be pretty easy. I'll probably do Cthulhu closer to last.

Well, that is quite humbling to have someone inspired by my work. Glad you liked it and yours looks great

Some progress. Primed black and then a dusting of gray. Next up: white drybrush.
