You could change this thread's title to "Capt.'s Thawk and miscellaneous blog" etc. Just make the thread your blog for everything, kinda like how the other dakka greats have? I don't think anyone would go ham over it.

(If I am wrong correct me.)

Sorry for the late reply. You need to edit the first post of this entire thread, the OP that you made and edit the title.

Great model so far, might take some cues from you when I attempt to convert a stormwolf into something that actually looks good.

For the record- I haven't given up on this build, but if I'm honest I made a bit of a balls up while doing some work on the wings and I have to start again.
I've bought a new foamboard, and I'll redo the wings. After that's done the build part of this should be done and then it's the painting stage...

Can't wait, I always had a soft spot for the old flying castle. I like how it's different from generic sci fi, the later T hawks honestly don't scream 40k to me the way the flying castle does.

Because there's a delay with the Thunderhawk (which I hope to rectify soon) I may as well show you some of the other stuff I'm working on... It saves me starting another thread... which I know I did, but yeah...

I didn't take any pictures while I was working on it, If I'm honest it's a struggle to do that. If I get "into the zone" with a conversion, I don't want to stop...

Anyway- you can see the similarities in the Grav tanks- I made some changes in as much as mine has 3 engines instead of 2. Also like the artwork- I have those 2 engines on either side (made from Imperial Guard Hellhound tanks) The thrusters on the sides are left overs from the Thunderhawk Lego thusters.
I was going to have the different side hatches but they didn't fit with the side engines on so the side doors became figure bases! and the underside engine is also left over Millennium Falcon parts (used on the inside ramp of the Thunderhawk).

I've left it unpainted for these pictures so you can see the plasticard and the different parts used. I'll be painting it in a bit.

I will get back to the Thunderhawk... just bear with me.

Hello guys, I just thought I'd let you know the wings are well underway with construction. The missile bays are largely done- One of them needs a little more work... And the main trench and turret bay are done. Next comes cutting it down into the right shape. Then treatment, then adding the extra bits including missiles, vents, anti-Infantry weapons, landing pads, thrusters and engine boosters. There's a fait bit that goes on the wings!

The wings were cut to shape, but unfortunately with handling a hotwire, the slightest twitch can leave obvious failings.
I'm a lot happier with this set of wings than my original set, but they're not perfect. I won't be doing another one though... These will do.
Looking at the dents and unwanted grooves, I thought I'd fill them with modelling putty and sanding them down... then I had another idea...
Foam armour
I first heard of this stuff in 2012 on a trip to London. I've never used it before but its supposed to make foam as hard as plastic. I'll be testing it on the old wings to see how it works, and if I'm happy- which I'm sure I will- I'll not only use in on the wings but I'll also be using it on the Thunderhawk's windows, so the whole ship should become pretty tough

Okay guys, there was a minor issue with my thread but it seems to have been resolved so I'll get back to posting my progress (even if it's a bit late...

I felt a bit jipped with this foam armour- As I mentioned it was supposed to turn the foam hard as plastic...
even the label described it as a tough resin. I have Resin phaser rifles and Resin phasers. I know what I was expecting... It turned out however to be a slightly thicker version of PVA. To say I was unimpressed would be an understatement.
I carried on regardless because I am not in the habit of wasting money, and I applied multiple layers... I am still not impressed

I should have probably used better lighting, but it was a big gloopy mess

While waiting for the wings to dry I turned my attention to the hull Straightening out my milk bottle turrets and filling in any gaps in the construction. I then applied the foam "armour" to the windows along the hull.

Are they really windows? or just ornate construction? It will make a difference when it cones to painting this

Now that the wings are dry... both top and bottom... I thought I'd do a test fitting of the crud that's going on the bottom of the wings.

The assault cannons for anti-infantry (not on the original mini)
centre thrusters (not on the original mini)
Deathstrike missiles
Landing feet
Missile bay air vents (not on the original mini)
Missile panels (possibly not on the original mini... possibly on the mini)

I know ages ago I asked about adding things to it that aren't on the original and the response was favourable. I added thrusters to the hull and I have more for the wingtips. The large panels hide construction but there is a suggestion of something similar on the original mini. The 4 grey thrusters in the middle (I can't remember which GW model they came from) and other bits do help I think.

The front feet are attached to Citadel horse bases. The rear feet are wider and are attached to Citadel monster bases

None of it is glued yet... but will be soon

I started attaching the feet first and foremost, but they weren't sticking to the coat of foam armiour this thing had. I find myself having to peel off a lot of it in order to attach what I need then maybe putting on another coat.
I should have considered that already

This is looking good...
If your glue isn't sticking to the foam armour, chances are that paint won't either, you might want to do a test.
Maybe try sanding it as well

Thanks for the reply, @Guardling. Paint holds just fine... or at least the black undercoat does and that's the most important part, right?

This is nearing it's completion- I was about to attack the engine boosters on last night and I started having regrets about all the things I didn't do or add to it... I thank Blackadder for this mostly... but I started thinking about all the interior work I haven't put in this...and I could have. I was asked if I would add lights that would activate when the door opened, (I wish my skills were that high) then Blackadder shows he a way I can light it without those skills. I'm still on the fence about whether I should curse him or thank him.... (Thank you Mr B)

Lying in bed I thought about interior work I could add, gangways and doors as well as hints of an engine. I even designed a cockpit in my head and then dismissed it as no-one would EVER see it. I thought about making the arched windows on the hull actual windows- maybe even stained glass- I thought and designed a lot for this... If I ever did another (NO) It would have so much more (I could though... it's not a difficult build).

The roof was secured to the hull a couple of days ago and I was considering taking it off again and adding what little interior extras I can from above, like walkways, engines, iconography (No windows) and lights....

In other news I have attached a lot of parts to the wings- particularly the underside...The bays have missile cradles in them and while the panels are ready I won't be adding them until the bays are painted and missiles are painted up, decaled and installed. That won't take long- the process has already begun. By the way, can anyone identify the thrusters I have used on the underside? They came out of a bitsbox delve but I have no idea what vehicle they originally came from... I could do with two more and I'd like to know what I'm looking for...

While the missiles are essentially done obviously their cradles and the missile bays need tidying up and some drybrushing...
The side Turrets will get a bit more detailing around the battle cannon they they'll both get their primary colour soon, as will the roof.
The feet are black with their undercoat and they'll get some painting detailing around the hydraulics. There are other areas that will follow- Boosters, thrusters, and some additions to the interior...

Thanks for the support, those that are still following this... I appreciate it.
