Lightning claws.... rawr!

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Yes, so anyway...some instances have them retractable, others not. Some variants like Terminator versions do not appear retractable at all, while others like Chaos Lord/Terminator/Raptor Lightning claws are likewise non-retractable on the model. Then you have others like the Talon of Horus, where it looks fixed but is said in fluff to be retractable.

I wouldn't think any of the chaos versions are retractable. That is why I love Warp Talons. Always ready to kill things. Wall in the way? Cut a hole in reality and jump through to the other side. Trench? Fly over it. Something that needs killed? Well, you know the rest.

Get shot to death while being unable to assault into cover. Damn you GW!

That's what I mean. The Talon of Horus in particular is my reference. Abaddon and Horus' models both look unretractable but in Fulgrim,
Spoiler:
The Daemon-Fulgrim hybrid "hears the rasp of the Warmaster's claws unsheathing."
, so it is hard to say. Chances are that the claws are actually staggered and so fold into themselves, like a TV ariel or something if you know what I mean? And the model is just too small to show that.

Maybe the claws are unretractable, but Horus has a special sheath that he put over them to avoid killing and destroying stuff unintentionally.

Yeah.... I'm going to pretend that didn't happen. Next they will have power fists "unsheathing" . Then Lascannons, then Rhinos, etc.....

Sounds like some kinky Dark Eldar weapon.

He was not the golden lord. The Emperor will carry us to the stars, but never beyond them. My dreams will be lies, if a golden lord does not rise.

I look to the stars now, with the old scrolls burning runes across my memory. And I see my own hands as I write these words. Erebus and Kor Phaeron speak the truth.

My hands. They, too, are golden.

I really think the Talon of Horus issue came form the author having no clue what the weapon he was writing about looked like.
